Be it known that I, WALTER F. KOKEN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Barber- Poles, of which the following is a full, clear,
and exact description,-such as willenable others skilled in the art to which .tains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to revolving barber poles, and has for its main object to provide a barber pole of novel design. which is driven by an electric motor. Another object is to provide an ornamental revolving barber pole that. isequipped with a plurality of electric lights and a motor-driven, intermittent switch for causit appering said lights to flash or light up in a certain sequence, the motor that actuates said switch alsobeing used to'operate the rotatable member of the pole. And still another object is to provide an illuminated re'- volving barber pole that can be manufactured cheaply and which is so constructed that the lights, the motor, the intermittent 1 switch and the driving mechanism are com pletely' protected from the weather.

A frame that is arranged inside of the casing D carries the motor B, the intermittent switch for controlling the electric lights C, and the mechanism for transmitting movement from the motor to the rotatable member A and to said switch, said frame being detachably connected to the member 3 by means of fastening devices 12, and preferably consisting of three castings, a, b and c, that are detachably connected together, as shown in Fig. 4, and which are provided with horizontally disposed portions 13 in which the various shafts of the operating mechanism are journaled. The motor B is mounted on the horizontally-disposed portion 13 on the intermediate casting b, and the shaft of said motor is'provided with a worm 14 that meshes with a Worm gear 15 on a vertically-disposed shaft 16 which is providedwith a gear 17 thatmeshes with a gear 18 on a vertically-disposeddriving shaft 19. The upper end of the driving shaft 19 is connected to a spider 20 at the lower end of the rotatable member A, thus serving to support the member A, as Well as impart rotar vmovement to same. At the upper end 0 themember A is a spider 21 provided with a center opening which receives a guiding member 22, that projects downwardly from the cross piece 8 carried by the top supporting member 2.
The electric light bulbs C at the upper end of the pole are mounted in lamp sockets 23 in a box 24 which is provided at its lower end with a horizontally-disposed portion 24 which bears upon lugs 25 that project inwardly from the top member 26 of an ornamental ca E that incases the top supporting mem r 2 and the various parts carried by said member 2. The cap E is preferably tapered and of octagonal shape in general outline, and at the lower edge of same is an octagonal-shaped flange e that telescopes over the top supporting member 2. The top piece 26 of the cap E is provided at its lower edge with an octagonal-shaped flange 6' that telescopes over the upper end portion of the cap E, and said top piece 26 is also provided with an annular-shaped.
flange e that receives a transparent globe 27 that incases the lamp bulbs C, the rim or annular flange e of the top member of the cap E being provided with one or'more ad justable fastening devices 28 for holding the globe 27 in position. The top piece 26 is held firmly clamped-against the upper edge of the cap E, and the cap as an entirety is held securely clamped to the top supporting member 2 by means of bolts 29 that pass through the cross piece 8 and through the inwardly-projecting lugs 25 on the part 26, said bolts also serving to retain the lamp bulb box 24 in operative position, as shown clearly in Figs. 4 and 5. The depending guide 22 that passes through the center opening of the spider 21 at the upper end of the rotatable member A preferably consists of a piece of pipe that carries an electric light bulb 30 which is arranged inside of the rotatable member A, so as to illuminate said member, the member A be ing formed from paper or some other suitable material that is more or less transparent. The upper end of the pipe 22 is screwed into the cross piece 8 and is held securely in position by means of a set screw 31, as shown in Fig. 5. The casing D at the lower end of the pole is detachablyvconnected to the bottom supporting member 3, and
.the top and bottom supporting members 2 and 3, respectively, are connected together bymeans of long through bolts 32, shown in Fig. 3, which pass through pieces of tubing 33 that are interposed between the members 2 and 3, as. shown in Fig. 1.
The wires 34 from the electric lamp bulbs l lead downwardly through one of the pieces of tubing 33 to binding posts 35 that are provided with spring contacts 36 which form part of an intermittent switch that comprises a rotatable member 37 equipped with a wiper 38, as shown in Fig. 7, that engages the contacts 36 intermittently when the member 37 is rotated. The rotatable member 37 of said intermittent switch is carried by a vertically disposed shaft 39, whichis provided at its lower end with a gear 40, shown in Figs. 4 and 7, that meshes with a pinion 41 on the lower end of the driving shaft 19, thereby causingv the movable member 37 of the switch to rotate continuously when the motor B is in operation.
A spring contact 42 that always remains in member A of the pole being connected in multiple with the supply circuit S, as shown inFig. 7. A switch S is arranged in the motor circuit, as shown in Fig. 7, so as to control same, and a switch S is arranged in the supply circuit at a point beyond the switch S, so as to enable the lighting circuit to be opened and closed without affect ing the motor circuit. 'During the day the switch S?- is left open so that the electric lights will not burn, but at night the switch S is left closed so that the light 30 on the inside of the rotatable member A of the polewill burn continuously, and thus illuminate same, and the different colored lights C will flash or light up intermittently in a certain sequence, and thus attract attention to the pole. A barber pole of the construction above described presents a neat and ornamental appearance, as it comprises a constantly rotating member A provided with conventional barber pole stripes that-is arranged inside of a glass housing that is surmounted y large, ball-shaped globe 27 in which a plurality of electric lights are arranged.
