SPARK PLUG. APPLICATION FlLED JUNEZ3, 19.15.

. messes.
To all whom it may concern:
I 3 Be it knownthat I, Jossrri A. 80mm,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, haveinvented new anduseful'Improyements in 'Spai'k Plugs, lot which the a following" is a specification.
' useful improvements-in spark plugs for hy- This invention relates to certain novel and duo-carbon engines and has particular application to the core or holder for the power electrode. v r
In carrying out the present invention it is my purpose to provide a spark. plug wherein the power electrode will be securely and efi'ectively held in posit-iorii'n thecore or'electrode holder so that accidental displacement of'the-jpowerelectrode from the core, in the operation f0f ,the engine, will I I 3w1llbe eliminated. After the gasketfijs be eliminated. I p
It is also myupurpose to provide a spark plug wherein the power. electrode will be" independent of the bindingpost and Wl1818-' in the binding post m be readily removed from the spark plug without disturbing the coiinectioirbetween' the plug and the power electrode! P i i i Vi ith the, above recited objects inview and others of a like nature the invention consists in the construction, combination 4 and arrangement of parts hereinafter set tional view through the spark plug. Fig. is a transverse sectional VIEW there section and having one end'screw-threaded inc-engage in the opening in the wall n the; '45
thrbugh. r
Referring now to the drawing in detail 1 designates a metallic shell circular in cross cylinder of the engine,"while 2 indicates a core or electrode holder disposed within the body 1, end suitably secured therein and formed of porcelain or'otherappropriate insiilating material. The groundelectmde'is secured to the cylinder end of the shell 1, as usual, while formed in the-core 2 is an axial bore 3 and the outer end of the bore 3 is circuinferentially enlarged as at l.- The side Wall of the circiiinferentially enlarged portion -11. of 'the bore tapers toward the outer end [of the core and increases its. di-

This gasket is disposed within the circumferentially enlarged portion 4 of the bore 3 and surrounds the portion of theele'ctrode 5 within" such enlarged part of the bore and is adapted to be driven downwardly withinthe enlarged'portion of the here so as'to bind against thetaperin'g side Wall of such enlarged portion thereby forming a secure connectionihet veen the electrode and the" core 50- that accidental movement of the electrode 5 withinithelhore driven home, a, filler 7 'of cement or analogous materi'al'is poured into the outer end of the circumferenrially enlarged portion gof the bore and such filler acts to hold the -gasket in proper p'ositionin the bore.-
In the present instance, the side wall of the core 2 adjacent to the outer end thereof 1 isunde'rcut to form a shoulder 8 and dis posed upon the outerend of the core 2 is a cup-shaped cap bearing 9 having the edge of theside all thereofhent inwardly to enis preferably hollow and the inner end portion thereof surroimds the adjacent end of,
the electrode and isin contact therewith Formed integral with the end wall is a binding? post 10 This binding-post 10 so as to fornran electrical connection between the binding" post and the 'iower electrode. This binding post 10 is adapted to receive the terminal of the current carrying I wireiand is equipped with a nut or theiike to insure a positive connection hetweenthe chrreni; carrying conductor aiid the binding post.-
the hereof the shell 1 is ciroumferentially enlarged as at 11 and formed at the juno Ii the present instance, the outer end of r I ture of the circumferentially enlarged per tion 11. with the inner end port on ofthe bore is a shoulder 12 The portion of the electrode holder 2 within the circumferem 'tiallv enlarged portion 11 of the here of the shell is circumferei tially enlarged at 13 while the extremity of the electrode holder 2 projecting into the lower portion of the bore in the shell 1. tapers outwardly as at 14: and at the juncture of the enlarged portion 13 with the tapering portion 14 a shout der 15 is formed.
Encircling the base of the tapering portion H and seated against the shoulder 15 is a gasket 16. while surrounding the ciu cunit'erentiall3 enlarged portion 13 of the electrode holder is a jacket 17 constructed of some suitable metal and having the lower end thereof flanged inwardly as at 18 and engaging the gasket 10 to hold thelatter against the shoulder 15. The remaining edge of the jacket 17 is pressed over the shoulder formed at the juncture of the outer end portion of the electrode holder with the clrcumferentially enlarged portion 13 so that the jacket may be held in proper position upon the electrode holder. The flange 18 on the jacket 17 rests upon the shouL der. 12 with the electrode holder disposed within the shell 1; and in order to hold the electrode holder securely within the shell a gland 19 is disposed about the electrode holder 2 and threaded into the circumferentially enlarged portion 11 of the shell and the inner end of the gland 19 engages the shoulder formed at the juncture of the circumferentially enlarged portion 13 of the electrode holder with the outer end portion of such shoulder and so cotiperates with the shoulder 12 to secure the electrode holder in the shell.
It will be seen that I have provided a spark plug wherein the po 'er electrode is securely and ell'cctive'ly he 1 in the core.
while the outer end of such electrode is detachahl associated with the binding post thereby enabling" the binding postto he removed from the mire when it is desired without disturhing' the couumrtion between the electrode and the core.
claim in a spin-h plug, a shell having one end portimi adapted to enter the opening in the cylinder and the here at the other end portion circuuilerenlially enlarged to .t'orm a shoulder. an electrode holder having one end pm-tion disposed within said shell and cirrunittercntially enlarged to correspond to the tion. of said shell and hearing against the enlarged portion of said electrode holder to secure the latter Within the shell, a power electrode carried by said electrode holder, and a ground electrode connected to the inner end of said shell.
In testimony whereof I my signature in presence of two witnesses.
