This invention relates to an improved oven, and has for one of its objectsthe provision of a novel and improved joint or seal between the edges of the door and the oven wall to minimize the escape ofheat.
Another object is to improve the construction of the door.
A further object is to provide improved means for connecting the door to the oven body and to limit swinging movement of the door. i
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of an oven embodying the features of myinvention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken in the plane of line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section in the plane of line 83 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a fragmental vertical sectional view taken in the plane of line H of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a fragmental front elevation of the upper left-hand corner of the oven, the door being open and parts being broken away. Fig. 6 is a fragmental horizontal section on an enlarged scale taken in about the same plane asFig.2. u a 1 I In the preferred form illustrated in the drawings, the oven comprises two end walls 10 and a rear wall ll'secured together along their vertical edges by suitable seams 12. A top wall 13 has its edges curled to form beads 14: at its under side, the beads at the endsand rear edge of said top wall fitting down over the end walls 10 and' rear wall 11. The end walls have outturned flanges 15 at their upper edges which engage in the beads 14 to lock thetop and end walls together. The rear wall 11 has an in-turned flange 16 lying along the top wall 13. Gornor-pieces 17 are mounted on the corners of the top wall and extend down beneath the beads 14: to give a finished appearance to the corners. Said pieces are held in place by screws 18 engaging in the top wall, the two rear screws also passing through the flange 16 on the rear wall to secure said two walls together.
A front wall 19 closes the lower part of the forward side of the oven, the upper part being closed'by a door. 20. At their forward edges the end walls 10 are provided with in-turned flanges 21. The front wall 19 is suitably secured to the lower portions of these flanges, while the upper portionsthereof which extend along the door opening are of irregular shape, each flange extending from the end wall first inwardly, then rearwardly, then inwardly again, and being provided at its inner edge with a curl or bead 22. Between said bead and the rearwardly extending portion of the flange is formed a groove 23 and the vertical edge of the door is provided with a flange 24 to pass lnto said groove and be tightly confined therein.
Since the flange is made of sheet metal, it
may, if desired, be made to yield so as to form a tight joint or seal with the flange on the door.
A member 25 of substantially the same shape as the flanges 21 extends horizontally beneath the forward edge of the top wall 13 and above thedoor 20. Said member is provided with a bead 26 at its lower edge which forms a groove 27 to receive a flange 28 on the upper edge of the door. Angle pieces 29 are fitted into the beads 22 and 26 at both the upper corners of the oven, the member 25 being supported by said angle pieces. The member 25 may also be suitably secured to the end walls 10. The door is provided with a rotatable latch or clip 30 adapted to engage the member 25 to hold the doorclosed, said clip having a handle 31 fixed with relation thereto.
The door 20 comprises a suitable frame which surrounds and supports a central panel 32. The panel may consist of a pane of glass having a metallic rim or binding longitudinally in their openings in the frame to disengage one or both ends of the wires and thus permit of removing the glass panel and substituting a solid metal panel if desired. The door is hinged at its lower edge to the body of'the oven by means .of pairs of hinge members. In thelr preferred form each pair of hinges comprises an upper member 33 secured to the door and having at its lower end oppositely projecting lugs 34 forming pintles, and a lower member 35 secured to the body of the oven by bolts 36 and having at its upper edge a pair of curled lugs 37 forming bearings which inclose the pintles 34, said bearings being open at their rear side to permit the introduction and withdrawal of the pintles 34 when the bolts 36 are loosened and the lower member drawn forwardly. Arms 38 on the upper hinge members pass through slots in the front flanges 21- of the end walls,
said arms being arranged to abut against stop projections 39 on the end walls when the door is swung downward, so as to support the door in a horizontal position. When closed the lower edge of the door is tightly held against the front wall 19.
The lower edges of the end walls 10, rear wall 11 and front wall 19 are turned in toward each other to form flanges 40. A false bottom wall 41 has fixed beneath opposite ends a pair of downwardly extending flanges 42 which rest at their lower edges upon the flanges 40. The rear edge of the bottom wall 41 fits snugly between the end walls 10, but the forward portions of the ends of the bottom wall are bent upwardly, as at 43, to permit the swinging movement of the stop arms 38. The bottom wall 41 is provided with a plurality of openings 44 therethrough adjacent to its edges. To the lower face of the bottom wall is secured a semi-cylindrical plate 45 which acts to direct the heated air through the openings 44 into the oven.
A set of inner or lining walls are located in spaced relation to the outer walls heretofore described, the said inner walls consisting of an upper wall 46 having upturned flanges 47, which abut against the top wall 13, the flanges at the rear edge and ends lying alongside the rear wall 11 and end walls 10.
The rear lining wall 48 abuts at its ends against the end walls 10, at its upper edge against the top lining wall46, and at its lower edge against the false bottom wall 41, and is provided with rearwardly extending flanges 49 abutting against the rear wall 11.
Each of the end lining walls 50 abuts at its edges against the top and rear lining out at its edge to engage the shoulder formed by the head which makes the groove 23.
One or more ledges 54 are secured to the inner faces of the inner end walls 50 for slidably supporting grids55.
The inner walls 41, 46, 48and 50 do not require any fastening devices, the top wall being supported by the rear and end walls, the rear wall being held in place by the end walls, and the said end walls being prevented from inward movement by the grids 55. These walls, therefore, may be very quickly assembled and are securely held against displacement without fastening devices.
In assembling, the false bottom wall is first put in place, then thetop lining wall 46, then the rear wall 48, and the forward edges of the end walls 50 are then engaged with the flanges 21 and said end walls are pushed into place. The grids are now put on their ledges.
I claim as my invention:
1. In an oven, the combination of a body having a door-opening, and having sheet metal members at the edges of said opening, said members having curled beads at their inner edges and being folded to form grooves adjacent to said beads, said grooves having three walls, and a door having angular flanges at its edges adapted to enter said grooves when the door is closed.
2. In an oven, the combination of a body having a door-opening and having sheet metal members at the edges of said opening, said. members having their inner edges curled to form beads and the members having a rearwardly bent portion forming with said beads longitudinal grooves having three walls, and a door having rearwardly extending angular flanges adapted to enter said grooves when the door is closed.
3. An oven comprising two sides and a top, irregularly shaped flanges extending-inwardly from the forward edges of said sides, a member depending from the forward edge of said top, said flanges'and said member each having a rearwardly bent' portion and having a curl or bead at their'inner edges to provide grooves having three walls, and a door hinged at its lower edge and having rearwardly extending angular flanges at its vertical edges and itsupper edge, the flanges being adapted to enter said grooves when the door is closed.
4. An oven comprising abody having a door-opening and having sheet metalmembers at the edges of said opening, each of said members having its inner edge curled and being bent to form with said curled edge a three-walled groove, and a door having angular flanges adapted to overlap said curlededges and enter said groove when the door is closed.
5. Inan oven, a door comprising a sheet metal frame providing a central opening and having a stop shoulder located at the edge of and projecting into said opening, a
panel having its edges fitting within the opening and abutting against said shoulder, and a plurality of transverse wires having their ends removably seated in said frame, said wires lying closely alongside said panel and constituting the means for holding the latter in place.
6. In an oven, in combination, a body comprising a front wall and two end walls, a door, two pairs of hinges connecting the lower edge of the door to said front wall, the hinged members secured to the door consisting of flat plates separate from but rigidly secured to the forward face of the door, each plate having one edge bent at right angles to the plate and extended to provide a stop arm which passes to the interior of the oven and lies closely alongside the end wall of the oven, and two stops rigidly mounted in the respective end walls and each adapted to have one of said arms abut against it for limiting the opening movement of the oven door.
