shown, and has a rack 19 in mesh with a pinion 20, which drives an escapement wheel 21, the latter controlled by dogs 22, which in turn are operated by a frame 23, having on its forward edge a universal bar 24, operated b v the heels 25 on the type-bars, and mounted at its rear end on rock arms 26, whereby, at every printing stroke of a typebar, said universal bar is pressed backwardly, and the carriage is caused to feed; the universal bar being returned by the usual spring 27.
The universal-bar frame is employed to vibrate'the ribbon up and down to cover the printing point at the type strokes. 'For this purpose, there is erected upon the universal bar a yoke 28, which of course moves backwardly with the universal bar during the printing stroke of the type and returns to normal position as the type swings downwardly. This yoke 28is provided with aver-tical slot `2S), in which plays a wrist 30, whereby the vibratory movements of the inking ribbon are produced. This wrist projects from an arm 31, extending upwardly from a pivot 32; and said arm 31, taken with arm 33, forms a level', which by means of the wrist 30 is vibrated at the printing strokes of the type-bars. A link 34 extends from 33 to the lever and lifts the same to elevate the ribbon-carrier 36 to interpose the ribbon between the type and the platen; the lever and the carrier 36 being loosely jointed by means of pin 37 and slot 37, as shown.
The ribbon may comprise 33, usually black, and a `lower stripe 39, usually red. As shown at Fig. 3, when the upper or black stripe is in use, the ribbon stands a little below the printing line on the platen; but not quite so far as illustrated in said Joerrisen'and Livingston patent, S0 that the stroke of the ribbon when writing black. (which is in use nearly all `the time) is somewhat shortened. and hence the speed of operation of the ribhon-vibrating parts is reduced, thus lessening the wear thereon and also reducing or eliminating the liaan upper stripe bility of overthrow of the ribbon due to.

The vertical slot29 in the actuator 52S may be suitably shaped for the purposes herein set forth; as for instance its upper end may be set forwardly a` little, as at 6G, in order to bring the ribbon carrier 36 to the correct normal position when capital letters are being written, and the lower or red stripe of the ribbon is being used. This, or other suitable shape of the slot 29, may be called 4for because the slot itself is not struck on the ribbon vibrating arm 35, which other-V wise might rise too high when the platenshift rail 17 is being raised, with the colorcontrolling arm 40 shifted up to red position, (Fig. 1l).
It will also be noticed, that owing to the fact that the vertical slot 2S) diverges from an arc drawn about the axis 42 as a center,
there is suiiicient shifting of the lever 31, 33 between the Fig. 3 and Fig. 9 positions, to bring the arms 33, 34 well away from the Fig. 3 position, so that the same length of stroke of the arm 33 may impart a greater stroke to the ribbon-vibrating lever 35. The linkage, comprising 33, 34, and 35, is so con strpctcd that uniform movements of the arm 33 hroduce, at Figs. 3 and 6, shorter strokes 0i the ribbpn-vibrating lever 35 than is the case at Figs. 9 and l0. It will be understood, also; that substantially the same results occur when the parts are shifted to upper-case position. Thus, while all the parts always remain connected, there is still a difference in the length of the stroke in favor of the black or upper stripe of the ribbon, which is the one most used. Since no part has to be disconnected from the others, a closer fit of the various working joints can be secured and maintained, thus insuring accuracy of movement of the ribbon, besides givingthe advantage of short strokes for the black stripe, and the further advan tage of preventing overthrow when making such short strokes.
If desired, a stop G7, Fig. 1l, may be fixed upon the machine frame to be engaged by pin 37, for arresting the ribbon-vibrator at the conclusion of its printing stroke, when writing red in the upper-case position. By

At this time also, the length of stroke ofthe ribbon-vibrating lever 35 is somewhat further reduced; the niovements of the parts 33, 34 being principally in the vicinity of the straight-line dead position in which the arm 35 is moved but very little during the usual strokes of the lever 31, 3?. l
The color-controlling cam plate or slide 45 may, if desired, be shifted over to the Fig. 2 position by means of the rock-shaft 55 and crank 5G. However, I prefer to em ploy a` separate finger-piece .fiS (Fig. 7) for shifting the ribbon mechanisi'n to the position at Figs. l and 2. This fingcnpiecc G8 is formed upon a` slide (if), which is carried upon headed studs T0 fastened in the frame of the machine; the slide having horizontal 'Slots 71 to support it and guide it upon said studs. Provided upon the inner end oi the slide G9 is a rest or abutment 72 which is engaged by the pin (il, before mentioned. lVhen the slide G9 in normal position, Fig. 7, the rest or abutment 72 serves as a. stop to be engaged by pin (34 to arrest the cross arm 54 when the color key 52 is depressed, as at Fig. 7. When it is desired to write av stencil, the operator presses the tinger-piece (38 to the right, thus withdrawing the abutment 72, to -perinit further movement counter-clockwise of the cross-arm 54, with its rock-shaft 55 and the crank 5G thereon, this movement being effected by an abutment or edge 74, which now engages a. pin 75 on an arm 7G extending down from the forward part of said rock-shaft 55 (Fig. 3), and swings the rock-shaft to the extreme position of Fig. 2, thus carrying the colorcontrolling cam plate or slide 45 to its extreme right-hand position. The spring detent 60 holds the rockshaft 55 in this position, and preferably the slide 69 is also provided i-.with a ldetent 'lifto enter notches 7S and 79`in said slide. In ribbon mechanism for use with a ribbon having upper and lower color stripes, the combination with a ribbon carrier, of al ribbon-vibrating lever, an actuator by which said lever is operated, a controlling device or arm upon which is pivoted said ribbonvibrating lever, said controlling arm mounted to swing upwardly and carry up the ribbon-vibrating lever when it`is desired to bring the lower stripe of the ribbon into use. and means to change the relation of said actuator and ribbon-vibrating lever during the shifting of said arm whereby a greater throw of the ribbon is e'ected when said arm is in position to bring the lower stripe of the ribbon into use.
10. In a. typewriting machine, the combination with a key-operated universal bar, of a slotted yoke on said bar, a ribbon-vibrating lever, a link and lever connected l thereto, a platen shifting frame, and an arm mounted to swing on said frame, said levers pivoted on said arm to swing therewith and ring either color stripe of a bichrome ribbon to active position, said second-mentioned lever having a wrist to engage with the slot in said-yoke, said slot operating when said arm is swung to change the relation of said levers and therebyfvarv the extent of the throw of the ribbon by the vibrating lever.
11. In a typewriting machine, the conibination with a ribbon-vibrator for vibrating a ribbon over the printing point, oi akey-operated actuator to actuate said vibrator, and means for shifting said vibrator and thereby carrying the ribbon to such position that the vibration of the ribbon-vibrator by the actuator will not move the ribbon to position to cover the printing point.
