Be itknown that I, ALBERT H. GENTLE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Birmingham, in the county of J efferson and Stateof Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Casting-Machines for Metallic Packing, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a casting machine peculiarly adapted for the manufacture of metallic packing rings and particularly sectional packing rings wherein the sections are provided with offset lugs or'shoulders which require to be carefully extracted from the molds to avoid distorting or injuring the lug. I i l 7 One object of my invention is to provide a machine particularly adapted for rapidly casting packing rings in metallic molds and one feature of special advantage is the manner in which the top plate over the molds carrying the gates for the metal is made adjustable to clear the molds and trim off the Another feature ofparticular advantage is the manner in which the molds are journaled in the machine frameand adapted to be tilted so that the finished packing rings when ejected from their molds will fall by ravity into a receiving hopper or chute and not require handling.

the latter being attached eccentrically to the frame to permit of a limited adjustment. 1 have shown molds designed for the manufacture of two complete sets of packing rings, each set comprising a plain sectional ring which interfits at break joints within a sectional ring having internal lugs. As the pairsof molds are duplicates, only one pair 7 will be described. The mold chamber or vchambers in the multiple mold used for casttaper pin 23 which is driven through alining 31*, being (see Fig. 3) it entirely fills out the slot in openings on opposite sides of the mold chamber. The barrel 17 is provided with elongated slots 24 through which the pin passes serving both to limit the forward travel of the barrel and prevent its rotation about its longitudinal axis. To facilitate the removal of the pin, its outer end is threaded and has a nut 25 thereon adapted to be screwed down to engage the mold and force out the pin. The inner end of the barrel 17 is closed by a screw plug 26 having on its inner face a stud 27 which engages one end of a coiled spring 28, the other end of which engages a corresponding stud 27 on the rear face of.

The mold for forming the packing rings which carry the internal lugs, comprisesa movable barrel 29 which-has slots 2 1 therein and is held against rotation by a pin 23 in the same manner as barrel 17. This mold chamber has a seat 30 which an offset shou-lder on the barrel I engages. Within this barrel is a stationary head 31 which forms the inner wall of the mold cavity and is held against movement by the pin 23 This head has a reduced cylindrical head portion 7 to engage only the plate 42.

The pattern slots permit the extensions 32 -to pass down through them and seat in the slots in the barrel end which'theyfill. out. The barrel 29 also carries pattern lugs 37 which are oppositely disposed and extend flush with' the top of the mold to divide the mold forbeing driventhrough their outer ends to' hold the cross plate 39 against 'disengagement from the pins. This plate 39 overlaps V the rear ends of all four barrels in the mold box. I mount on the back of plate 39 a pair 'of pins 11 which serve as guides for a diagseparate means, one controlled by the foot lever 4:3.and the other by the hand lever 44;. The foot. lever is pivoted to a bearing plate 45 and connected by a link 46 with a bell crank lever 17 keyed to a shaft 50 which is journaled in the sides 2' of the frame and project s-beyond-the other side where it is connectedto a similar bell crank 47. These two bell cranks have slots 48 in which engage pins 49 at opposite ends of a slide frame 51 (see Fig.6) which at its center carries a pair of spacedpins 52 arranged as they are advanced to straddle the platei12 the mold being in the position shown in Fig. 3, and to strike only the plate 39.- The hand lever llis fast on a shaft 53 journaled in;

The hand wheel 10 is now reversely turned and as the top plate is shifted to the left it shears the metal runners and leaves the top faces of the packing rings smooth and clean.

The ends 32 of the ejector 32 form movable bottoms for the said lug forming slots in the pattern 36, and in-order to'eject these ringsections without defacing'the lugs, the operator next presses on the handy lever Maud rocks the bell crank 56 into. engagement with the plate 42, which-forces the rods 33 inwardly and carries with them the plates 32, moving their ends 32 out flush with the top walls of the pattern 36, and forcing the lugs out of the pattern slots, whereupon the packingrings are ejected without injuryand fall by gravity from the molds. No manual handling of the molds or of the finished castingis required by my apparatus and it operates quickly and accurately to form the type of castings referred to or; is available for cast- 7 ing other devicesof like character.
Without limiting myself to the details of construction which are disclosed only in their preferred embodiment, what I, claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s:
1. In a casting machine. the combination of a frame, a multiple mold mounted therein, a top mold plate having gates therein adapted to register with the molds, means to shift said top plate laterally of the-multiple mold to shear the runners and expose the finished cast articles, and ejecting means to force the finished articles fromv the molds, substantially as described.
2. In a casting machine of the character described, a frame, a multiple mold pivotally connected to the frame, a top mold plate which is provided with gates for the molds,
means to shift said top plate to shear off the runners and finish the molded articles and also to clear the multiple mold, means to tilt the mold after its top plate has been shifted, and mechanism to eject the finished articles from the multiple mold in its tilted position.
8. In a casting machine of the character described, a multiple mold, each mold having means adapted to eject the molded article, a frame in which the multiple mold is pivotallymounted, and lever controlled mechanism. adapted to actuate the ejecting mechanism when the molds are tilted from their pouring'position to permit the cast articles, when ejcc-ted,to fall by gravity from the molds, substantially as described.
4:. In a casting machine of the character described, a multiple mold comprising mold cavities formed between inner and outer spaced members, a reciprccatory barrel formmg the bottom of each mold cavity,
means to hold said members in fixed relationship, means to actuate the barrels to eject the cast articles, the inner member and barrel of one or more molds being slotted to receive-an independently movable ejecting member, means to move a barrel and its coacting ejecting member simultaneously, and independently controllable means to actuate said independent ejecting member, substantially as described.
In a casting machine, the combination of amold having a circular chamber there in, a circular head held in fixed central relationship in said chamber with its outer end flush with the top of the mold, a barrel movable axially of said chamber and forming the bottom of the mold cavity, a raised pattern on its outer end, the barrel head and pattern having alining recesses adapted to receive an ejecting member which is adapt-- ed to fill the slot in the end of the head and barrel but leaves open the slot in the pattern, means to'move said barrel axially to move the pattern and casting beyond the chamber, and independent mechanism to move said ejector member to dislodge the casting from the pattern, substantially as described.
6. In a casting machine of the character described. a 'mold having a circular chamber therein, transverse alining holes in said mold, a barrel whichfits slidingly in the mold chamber, a head which makes a close fit in the outer end of said barrel which. has oppositely disposed elongated slots, said head having an opening therethrough, a pin inserted in the alining openings in the mold and head and passing through the slots in the barrel, and mechanism to actuate the barrelto eject'the molded article.

In a casting machine, a frame, a mold box pivoted to the frame, means for tilting said box, stops onthe frame to arrest the box in horizontal or inclined position, ejecting devices carried by said mold box, and actuatin mechanism carried by the frame and adapted to engage said ejecting devices when the mold box standsiin its tilted positicn, substantially as described. 1 V

In a multiple mold, a plurality of annular molds formed by spaced members forming the inner and outer walls of anlular mold chambers, means to hold said members in fixed relationship, movable barrels forming the bottoms of said mold chambers, patterns on said barrels which traverse the mold chamberradiallyto subdivide it into sections and which in pouring position stand flushwith the top of the mold chamber, and means to move the barrels to eject the sectional casting, substan} tially asdescribed.
