. To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, STEPHEN loops, a
citizen of the United States of America, re-
siding at Upper Montclair, in the county of Essex, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Metal Containers, of which thefollowing is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sheet metal containers and has as its object the production of such device in such manner that it will be extremely strong while easy and cheap to manufacture. Furthermore by the practice of my invention the container produced is of extremely attractive appearance. 7
Other objects will appear in the following specification.
I shall describe one form of container embodying the principles of my invention in connection with the accompanying drawings in which? Figure 1 is a plan View of a blank for the body of the container. F ig. 2 is a plan view of a blank for forming one of the legs or corners for the container. Fig. 3 is an isometric perspective view of the container set up and assembled, parts being broken away and parts being shown in dotted lines for clearness of illustration. Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view through the end of the container, one of the corner or end leg members being shown in full lines. Fig. '5 is an elevation of one of the corner or leg members detached. Fig. 6 is a sectional view along the bottom of the box at the corner, partly broken away.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views.
The blank shown in Fig. 1 may be stamped out of any suitable metal, silver orgold, or plated metal, or otherwise, as may be desired. In the blank a, a indicate the sides of the box, I) the bottom, 0, c the ends and d, dfcl, (I end portions or flaps on the respective sides and ends which may be turned over to form a dependent rim giving a curved upper edge to the assembled container, as shown at e in Figs. 3 and 4. f, f indicate lugs in such relationship to each other that When the sides a, a, and ends a, c are bent or turned up along the lines 9, 9, said lugs will interlock as shown in Fig. 3. The lugs are shown as being graduated in distance of projection from the top to the bottom for the purpose hereinafter specified. h, h indicate perforations in the bottom .7) of the box for the purpose hereinafter specified.
The blank for forming the corner or leg member of the container shown in Fig. 2 is stamped to form seats 2', z and pins j, 7', so that when the blank is bent up along the lines is, it to form the completed corner or leg member shown in Fig. 5, the pins j, j will be in position to come together and enter perforations it in the bottom Z) of the container, the seats 2', a forming a support for the bottom of the box when the corner or leg member is in place.
As shown in Fig. 3, an ear Z may be formed on the rear side of the two back corner or leg members to receive pin m, passing through hinged member a on cover 0 to form a h nge for connecting the cover and the box together.

The container being then in an inverted position, molten metal such as lead, or any suitable cementitious substance is run into the hollow leg filling the same to any desirable extent and firmly uniting the lugs, the filling material and the leg member t ogether so that upon the cooling or the setting of the filling material, the leg members are immovable upon the corners and the corners are held firmly together in locked position. The leg member being smaller at the top than at the bottom cannot, of course, pull off over the filling material which is firmly united to the interlocking lugs as described. The corner or leg members, it will be seen, perform a triple function viz: that of a leg, that of a corner and that of a mold for the reinforcement and uniting of the corners of the container together.
i It will be clear from the foregoing specification that by the means disclosed a container may be cheaply, quickly and effectively made without soldering, producing a structure of great strength and stability. I am aware that the forms of the various parts may be changed without departing from the spirit of my invention and I do not restrict myself to any such forms or other details further than the scope of the ap pended claims demands.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A sheet-metal container having interlocking corners comprising outwardly extending lugs formed on the edges of the side and end walls of the container substantially in the plane of said walls respectively and crossing each other at an angle, a form mounted on each of said corners but appreciably distant therefrom and a filler between said form and said corners.
2. A sheet-metal container having interlocking corners comprising outwardly extending lugs formed on the edges of the side and end walls of the container substantially in the plane 01' said walls respectively and crossing each other at an angle, a hollow form mounted on each of said corners but having a space between said corners and the walls of said form and a filler between said form and said corners uniting the same together.
3. A sheet-metal container comprising a body blank and a corner blank, the body blank being stamped to form the bottom, sides and ends of the container, the sides and ends being formed with outwardly projecting lugs in the plane of said sides and ends respectively and adapted to interlock when the sides and ends are bent up at right angles to the bottom and the corner blank being stamped to form a hollow leg to fit the corners of the container.
4. A sheet-metal container comprising a 'body blank and a corner blank, the body blank being stamped to form the bottom, sides and ends of the container, the sides and ends being formed with a plurality of lugs at each of the side edges thereof, the lugs increasing in distance of projection from the side edges of the sides and ends respectively from without inward and said lugs being adapted to interlock when the sides and ends are bent up at right angles STEPHEN WOODS.
