ADJUSTABLE HORSESHOE.
Specification of Letters atent.
Patented Mal'. 21, 1916.
Application Vlei January 10, 1916. Serial No. 71,269.
Vthe provision of a horse shoe having hinged sections adapting the same for adjustment upon hoofs of different sizes, the same beingV then arranged for securely clamping in operative position. n
A further object of the device is the provision of a horse shoe adjustable in size and having lateral flexibility for automatically- 'adjusting the same to the sole of the hoof, the shoe being removably clamped to the'` latter.
In carrying out the said objects, a horseshoe of substantially the usual form is provided having strap and bolt attaching means, while the shoe is arranged in sections hinged together, for both lateral and spreading adjustments.
Vith these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, andpointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like-designatingcharacters refer to corresponding parts throughout the severalV views: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a shoe of the present construction operatively positioned upon a hoof, the latter being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the shoe. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view taken upon line III-III of Fig. 2, and Fig. 1 is a front elevationV of the toe portion of the shoe.
The present horse shoe is herein illustrated in connection with an animals hoof 10 shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 and broadly7 consists of a shoe 11 of the usual arch-shape.
The shoe 11 is formed of four sections hinged together, there being two oppositely hinged toe sections 12 hinged to each other and each having a heel section 13 hinged to the rear end thereof. The toe sections 12 are hinged together at their forward ends by means of a plate 11 pivoted to the adj acent ends of the toe sections by means of screw-pins 15, this hinged connection being arranged within the toe calk portion 16 of the shoe 11, one-half of the said callr being provided upon the `forward end of each of the toe sections. By means of this hinge, the opposite sides of the shoe 11 including both the toe sections 12 and heel sections 13 may be moved relatively to each other by positioning the same upon the hoof 11, it being noted that the said toe sections are provided with an inwardly inclined arm 17 adapted to engage the outer surface of the hoof, connecting straps 18 being secured to the free ends of the said arm 17 for binding over thetoe of the hoof and assisting in retaining the shoe thereupon.
The heel sections 13 are pivoted to the rear ends of the toe sections 12 by means of hinges 19 and whereby the heel and toe sections are relatively movable vertically, when the shoe is in its horizontal or normal position. In other words, the toe hinge 14 allows the opposite halves of the shoe 11 to be spread apart or drawn toward each other, while the hinges 19 allow the heel sections to be shifted at different angles to the toe sections 12. j
The rear free ends of the heel sections 13 are provided with perforated lugs 20 which are oppositely positioned and through which a clamping bolt 21 is arranged. When the shoe 11 is adjusted upon the hoof 10, the straps 18 are secured in position over the toe of the hoof and the bolt 2l is arranged rearwardly of the latter and a turn nut 22 upon the said bolt is adapted to be tightened for clamping the shoe upon the hoof.4
Side ears 23 are arranged upon the hoof engaging face of the heel sections 13 at the outer edges thereof which are adapted to engage the outer edges of the hoof 10 and to be countersunk therein for more firmly seating the shoe thereupon. Side calks 21 are provided upon the toe sections 12 adjacent the arm 17, while rear calks 25 are positioned adiacent the free ends of the heel sections 13.
While the form of the invention herein shown and described is what is believed to be the preferred. embodiment thereof, it s nevertheless .to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the claims.
IVhat I claim as new is y Y l. A horse shoe comprising oppositely arranged toe sections, a spreading-permitting hinged connection between adjacent ends of the said sections, heel sections hinged transversely of the shoe to the rear ends of the said toe sections, hoof-engaging retaining means carried by the said toe sections, and a retaining clamp connecting the rear ends ofthe said heel sections.
A device of the class described comprising a horse shoe shaped member formed of two toe sections and two heel sections, toe calk portions carried by the forward ends'of the said toe sections, a hinged plate connecting the forward adjacent ends of the said toe sections at the said call; portions, side callrs carried by the said toe sections, up-
fwardly inclined hoof-engaging arms carried by the said toe'sections adjacent the said side calks, clamping strapscarried by the 4freeends of the said arms, and hinge connections arranged transversely of the shoe between Ythe rear ends of the said toe sections and the said heel sections.
35A .device of theclass described conn-4 44prising a horse s'hoeshaped member formed of two toe sections and two heell sections, toe
calk portions carried by the forward ends of the said toeV sections, a hinged plate connecting the forward adjacent ends of the said Vtoe sectionsat the said call( portions, side;
tween the adjacent ends'of the said heel and toe sections having their axes positioned transversely of the shoe and substantially parallel with the tread surface thereof, up-
wardly projecting perforated lugs at the Y, rear ends of the said heel sections, a c lamping bolt between the said lngs,'heel calks positioned adjacent the free ends of the said heel sections, and positioning ears carjl* ried by the enter marginal edges of theV latter.l j j *Y Y Y Y In testimony whereof I ah'ix my signature.
