SAW.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I. JosEPH Lonsnn, zen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saws, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in saws and more particularly to a rotary circular hand saw.
The primary object ofthe invention is the such a saw which is light-in construction and easy in operation.
A further object saw having a guard secured thereto to prevent injury while operating.
A still further object is the provision of means for protecting the gears.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel details of conof parts which will be more clearly understood from the following description and drawings, in which,
Figure bottom view partly in section, a fragmental vertical section on 33 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, a guard shield having 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a and Fig. 3 is the line the numeral 1 indicates a handle 2 secured thereto and having the threaded extension 3 for securing the flexible connection for operating the saw. The saw is indicated, at 4, and has an opening in the center thereof through which extends a threaded boss on a plate 5 and secured on the threaded end of the boss is a beveled gear 6. A threaded bolt 7 passes through one side of the shield 1 through the plate and boss 5 and is threadedly engaged in a socket formed in the opposite side of the shield. This bolt 7 forms the axis upon which the saw rotates. A shaft 8 is mounted in the shield by having an extension 9 entering a socket formed in the shield and the opposlte end extending into the extension 3. Secured on the shaft 8 is a beveled gear 10 which is adapted to mesh with the beveled gear 6. A flexible shaft is adapted to be secured to the shaft 8 for rotating the same.
v a cupped plate 11 which extends under the gear 10 and in close proximity to the saw blade 4. The ends of this cupped plate 11 overlap the sides of the beveled gear 10, thereby preventing the accumulation of dirt or any foreign matter on the gear.
Specification of Letters Patent.
a citiof San Francisco is the provislon of such a boss adapted to pass a gear Secured to the shield l is.
By constructing a saw Patented Mar. 21, 1916. Application filed September 28, 1914. Serial Ho. 863,904. I
in the above manner I have provided a light saw which may be easily moved from place to place and one in which there is little danger of injury. I
have also provided a guard 'gears, thereby preventing of foreign matter thereon for the beveled the accumulation which would hinder the easy operation of the saw. In assembling the several parts the boss on the plate 5 is placed throughthe opening in the saw and the heveled gear 6 is threaded onto the boss. The parts thus assembled are placed within the shield 1 and the threaded bolts 7 placed in position,
thereby securely holding the blade in position and forming an axis for the rotation thereof.
The beveled gear 10 is then meshed with the beveled gear 6 and upon the rotation of the shaft 8 the saw will be operated. By h formed on the shield there is no injury while the saw is in by providing the cupped aving the handle danger of plate beneath the gear 10 I have provided against the accumulation of dirt or any gear.
I claim as new and ters Patent is:--
foreign matter on the Having fully described my invention what desire to secure by Let- 1. A saw comprising a casing, a blade hava central opening, a plate having a boss passing through the central opening of the blade, a gear secured on the boss, a bolt passing through the casing and plate secured to the blade forming the axis the frame, a gear secured shaft mounted in to the shaft and meshing for the blade, a
with .the gear secured to the blade, and means for rotating the shaft.
2. A saw comprising handle secured thereto, a secured to the casing, a central opening, a plate opening of the blade,
thron a casing having a threaded extension saw blade having a having a threaded through the central threaded on the h the casing and the plate, a shaft mounted in the casing and extending into the extension on the casing, a gear secured to the shaft and adapted gear on the blade, the casing and extending to mesh with the a cupped plate secured to beneath the gear on the shaft, and means extending to the extension for rotating the shaft.
3. A saw comprising a handle and a portion of threaded extension secure casing having a reduced width, a d to the casing, a
saW blade having a central opening, a plate to the casing and extedning below and over having a threaded boss adapted to pass the sides of the gear on the shaft, and means through the central opening of the blade, a for rotating the shaft.
