JOHN A. NICHOLAS, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
ATTACHING DEVICE FOR OVERSHOES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 14, 1916.
Application filed September 2, 1915. Serial No. 48,684.
T 0 (11110710771 it may concern Be it known that I, JOHNA. NICHOLAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attaching Devices for Overshoes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for retaining overshoes on the shoes of horses and has for its object to provide a simple device of this character which will be very efficient in operation.
Another object of my invention is to provide an attaching means which will take the place of the usual straps and chains.
A further obiect is to provide an attaching means by which the overshoe can easily and quickly be ap lied to the horses shoe, and one which will be positive in its action in maintaining the outer shoe on the ordinary shoe of the horse.
A still further object of the invention is to provide attaching means which is adjus able to various sizes of horses shoes.
With these and minor objects in view, my invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 represents a top plan view of an overshoe equi ped with my improved attaching device; Fig. 2 is a rear end view thereof; Fig. 3 is an outer side elevation of one of the attaching devices: Fig. 4 is a detail elevation of the outer side of one end of this overshoe showing the groove therein; Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the attach ng member viewed from its inner face; Fig. (3 is a vertical transverse section taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 1; Fig. 7 is a detail plan view of a portion of an overshoe showing a modified form of attaching device for holding said overshoe in position; Fig. 8 is an outer side elevation of this modified form; Fig. 9 is a view similar to Fig. 8 but showing the wear plate removed; Fig. 10 is a transverse section taken on the line 10l0 of Fig. 8; and Fig. 11 illus trates a top plan view of a slightly different form of overshoe having one form of attaching device applied thereto.
In the form of attaching device illustrated in Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive, 1 designates this improved device applied to an overshoe 2 which is shown as applied to the usual form of horseshoe 3 having calks 4 on its rear ends. My improved attaching device is designed for application to any form of overshoe which employs an upright flange rising from a plate which underlies the horseshoe. The aforesaid figures designate this plate as 5 with its integrally formed upright flange as 6 to which the device 1 is secured. This attaching device comprises an attaching plate 7 which is designed with a longitudinal slot 8 adapted to receive therethrough a clamping bolt 9 which extends from a threaded opening 10 in the flange 6. Adjacent one end of this longitudinal-slot 8 is formed an inwardly projecting stud or lug 11 wh ch is adapted to proiect into a groove 12 formed in the outer face of the upright flange 6 and is designed to slide therein. From this description. it is evident that by tightening the bolt 9, this attaching plate is securely fastened to said upright flange. and bv providing the longitudinal slot this pla e can be secured'in various adiusted positions relative to said flange. The outer or rear end of this attaching plate 7 has formed integrally with its upper edge a laterally extending arm 13 which is designed to extend inwardly and overlie the upper face of the horseshoe. and the free end of said arm is bent downwardly to form a flange 14 which is adapted to embrace the-inner ed e of said shoe. The aforesaid groove 12 inclines downwardly to a slight ex ent from its rear toward its front end in order that, when said attaching plate carrying of my invention is designated as 15 and it is provided with a longitudinal slot 16 which'opens through the forward edge of' i said plate. Said plateis provided with an arm 13' having a downturned portion 14 at its free end which act similarly to the arm 13 wi h its downturned flange 14- and "performs the same function that these parts perform. This open slot 16 is designedto receive a pair of headed clampingbolts li which project through said slot from threaded openings 18 formed in the upright flange 6 of the horseshoe 2. The forward one of "said 'openings 18 is positioned in a plane slightly belo'w'that of the rearmost opening so as to cause said plate 15to injc li'ne downwardly fromits rear end to its forward end. Thisinclinedrelation of the openings 18 accomplish'a purpose similar to the inclined groove 12 in the preferred form of my invention, causing the arm 13' to bind againstthe upper edge of the horse shoe when the attaching plate 15 is moved forwardly. A wear .plate 19 is interposed between said attaching plate 15 and the headed clamping bolts 17 in order to more positively clamp said plate 15 against the upright flange'6.
While I have shown the elements best adapted to perform the functions ofmy invention, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended'clai'ms without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of 'the principles of the invention. Such departure from the preferred form of construction is illustrated in Fig. 11. In this form, the overshoe 2" has its uprightflange 6/ secured to the inner edge of the plate 15". The attaching device'here shown is similar to the preferred form of the invention, especiallythe means of adjustably attaching thes'ame with the upright flange of said overshoe. In this case, however, the arm 14 exends outwardly instead of'inwardlyas in previous figures, otherwise this form is substantially the same as the preceding.
lFrom'the foregoing, it is evident that I haveprovided a'devic'e which can'be applied horses having' plates adapted to underlie the under side of the horseshoe at the ends thereof, each of said plates having a flange rising from one edge thereof; of an overshoe attaching member comprising a flat plate adjustably secured to said flange, a horseshoeengaging member formedon one end of said flatplate, and means for adjustably securing said plate to said flange.
2. In combination with an overshoe for horses having plates adapted to underlie the under side of the horseshoe at the ends thereof, each of said plates having a flange rising from'one side edge thereof; of an overshoe attaching member comprising a flat plate adjustably secured to s'aid'flange, a laterally extending arn 'projecting from the upper edge of said flat plate, said arm having its outer endbent downwardly, and
means for adj ustably securing said flatplate to said flange. A p p p 3. In combination with an overshoe for horses having plates adapted to underlie the under side of the horseshoe at the ends thereof, each of said plates having a flange rising from one side edge thereof; of an overshoe attaching member comprising a longitudinally slotted plate adjustably secured to said flange, a horseshoe engaging member formed on one end of said slotted plate, and means for .adjustably securing said'slotted plate to said flange.
4. In combination with .an overshoe for.
horses having plates adapted to .underlie the under side of the horseshoe at'the ends thereof, each of said plates havinga flange rising fromone side edge thereof; of an overshoe attaching member comprising a in said flange. I I,
5. In combination with an overshoe for horses having plates adapted 'to underlie the under side of ahorseshoe at the Tends thereof; of aflange rising from one side of each of said plates. each OfSEllCl flanges being grooved longitudinally and provided with a threaded opening adjacent the end of said groove, longitudinally slotted through said slot from a threaded opening 7 plate. a stud projecting from theinner face of said slotted plate into said groove, and
a clamping bolt extending through said threaded opening.
