' One of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a simple and eflicient machine of this type wherein slicers of even thickness may be severed from the loaf and wherein after'each slice is cut the loaf is automatically fed forward a predetermined distance in position for the cutting of the next slice.
Further objects of the invention Wlll appear as the following specific descriptionis read in connection with the accompanying I drawings which form a part of this application and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation; Fig. 2 is a top plan view; Fig. 3 is an end elevation showing the parts in one position in dotted lines; d is a horizontal section taken on the line +l4 of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section taken on the line 55 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section.
Referring more particularly to the drawingsfl represents an elongated base having a centrally positioned longitudinalgroove 2 formed therein for a purpose to be hereinafterdescribed. Secured to the side edges of thebase are the side members 3 which have secured thereto the retaining strips 4! separated from the base to produce lateral grooves 5 in which the loaf carrier 6 1s adapted to slide. This carrier rests upon the base 1, and has its sideedges engaged within the grooves 5 and is normally actuated in one direction by a spiral spring-7 the frontend of the sides 3 are a pair of uprights 10 connected together at their upper ends by a yoke member 11 and providedwith vertical slots 12 in which the knife blade 13 is reciprocally mounted. This knife blade is provided at one end with any suitable type of handle 14 and at its oppositeend .is pivotally and slidably connected to the lever 15 pivoted in bearings 16 carried by the adjacent upright 10. This lever comprises a yoke shaped head, which is pivoted in the bearing 16 and extending outwardly from each end of the head are a pair of separated longitudinally slotted legs 17 between which the knife blade 18 is adapted to travel, a bolt 19 passing through the knife blade and through the slots in legs 17 whereby the lever will be actuated upon the reciprocation of the blade 13. Connected to the outer end of the legs 17 is a connecting rod or bar 20 which is jointed at its opposite end to a cut-0d plate or shutter 21 pivoted at one end to one of the up-rights and having its free end guided by a finger 22 secured to the opposite up-right and spaced therefrom.
In order to hold the loaf against the base of the carrier 6 there is adjustably secured to the rip-rights by means of the set screws 23, a yoke member 24 adapted to bear upon the upper face of the loaf as will be readily understood. 7
The lateral end of the connecting rod 20 is passed through the legs 18 and is threaded to receive an adjusting screw 25 arranged todraw the connecting rod toward the upright so that the cut-off plate 21 may be always held in proper relation with the uprights and with the knife and so that it will properly enter the space between the finger 22 and the uprights. As shown the upper end of the finger 22 is preferably beveled to insure the proper entrance of the cut-0d plate into the space.
In the operation of the device the carrier 6 is drawn rearwardly a sufficient distance to permit of the loaf being placed between the abutment 8 and the cut-ofi' plate 21 and end of the loaf. When the lever 16 is in horizontal position the knife blade may be drawn back and forth without appreciably effecting the position of the cut-off plate. When the knife is drawn toward the operator to its full extent and raised out of the kerf just made in the loaf the cut-off plate will be lowered into position. -The blade,
Y of course, being extended with the bolt 19,
engaging the'cuter wall of the slots in the legs 18, both ends of the blade are-then simultaneously elevated, the knife then being drawn toward the operator is released from the loaf permitting it .to advance under the'action of the spring 7. However,
, after the knife is drawn toward the operator the cut ofi' pla te will be moveddownwardly'entering between the severed slice and the end of the lc-af and stopping the movement of the loaf, thus placing the sameinto position where upon the next operation of the knife a similar slice will be severed from the loaf.
What is claimed is i 1. A bread slicing machine comprising a base, a knife mounted for reciprocation slotted-lever fitted to the base, a bolt passing through the end of the knife and through the slots in said lever, a cut-off? plate pivoted to one of the uprights, a finger cooperating with one side of the remaining upright for guiding the upper end of the cut-off plate and a link pivotally connecting 1 the cut-off plate and the lever together'.
In testimony whereof I aflix my" signature in presence of two witnesses. i
HUGH N. ATKISSON.
