T 0 all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, ELwr H. Roovnv, a citizen of the United States. residing at vVhitinsville, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Impro ements in Coiler-Fronts for Cards, of which the following is a specification,
The inventicn is an improved carding apparatus adapted to produceinultiple slivers condensed to such extent and with such degree of fineness and uniformity of weight as to be ready for immediate introduction to the slubber without the us al intermediate steps of drawing and doubling and without the employment of a rubbing condenser.
The objects and particular features of the improvement reside in the provisions hereinafter set forth and claimed, whereby uni-- form sliversof sufficient fineness to be immediately converted into fine hank roving, can be obtained from the fleece from a single card. which latter may run at its maximum efficiency. as may be reouired for the particular work in hand. ,Heretofore the card sli ers have'been passed directly to the roving frame only when a rubbing condenser such as the J osephy condenser has been used or where a very coarse yarn for special purposes not requiring particular uniformity in weight has been required.
To the end of obtaining the results of the Josephy condenser. as respects fineness of yarn, but without the complication and ex pense of suclimeclianism, the present invention comprises a special coiler front in combinaticn with a carding machine having its doifer cylinder suitably divided so as to deliver a plurality of separate webs or narrow fleece sections insteadof a single or double fleece as heretofore, In its most highly developed form the invention prefers eight or more of. such fieecesections from the card and the present exem'plification of the invention refers to'eiglit of such sections. The fleece sections from the cardthus divided are simultaneously, and independently condensed in two stages under conditions which arejthe same for each section and are then simultaneously and independently transferred also under equal conditions to a corresponding series of sliver cans forming part of the front and into which each condensed section of sliver is discharged and coiled. By such method of handling each of the tenuous fleece sections or slivers is preserved uniform in weight, although they have to travel different distances to their respective cans, and it thus becomes practicable to place such cans directlv behind the slubber without resort to doubling in the draw-frame.
The improvement is also concerned with the manner of construction and assemblage and the mode of operation of the several parts shown in the drawing, independently of the'number of subdivisions of the fleece, whereby the slivers are first partially condensed and then further and morecompactly condensed, as they are laidin the cans, and whereby the apparatus is rendered compact'as to its arrangement f-cans-and generally convenient of use for the purposes above stated. 7 I I The invention also. includes certain features of economy of manufacture as well as the adaptability of the front to existing cards. all as will be apparent to those skilled inthis art and as will be pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings. Figure 1 is a top plan view with parts broken out. of a dofier cylinder. of a divided card and a coiler front therefor employing this invention. Fig. 2 is a similar side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is, a top plan of the rotary can-stands of the coiling mechanism; and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of the same apparatus as shown in Fig. 1, with a modified form of sliver table.
For convenience of illustration. all of the familiar mechanism of the card proper has been omitted from these figures, excepting the parts more or less directly connected with the present invention. These include clothing of the cylinder. The doffer driving I gear is marked 3 and the usual. dofler; comb is marked 4, being operated through the pulley 5 by the usual mechanism. The dofl'er comb is placed so as to co-act with the dotfer cylinder at a point which is substantially tangent tothehorizontal diameter ofthe cylinder. In such position the dirt liberated by the comb falls clear of the cylinder and not back upon it, as \vould'be'the case if located above the position indicated, and inasmuch as the present apparatus is specially useful for working waste cotton, which is usually more or less dirty, such location of the doficr comb is desirable.
The driven dofler gear 3"d'rives an adjustabletrain of gears 6'and 7, journaled on; a' gear plate 8boltedto the side frame of the" card, and from this train the delivery roll shaft 9 is driven through the gear'10, and from the same train a countershaft 1 1 isd'ri've'n through an idler '12 and a1 shaft gear 13. The roll shaft 9 extends transversely across the card frame, being journaled on the projecting ends of the latter, and carriesthe lowermostrollsl l of four pairs of calender rolls which are thus disposed parallel to the doffer comb and directly in front of it. The upper rolls 15 of these delivery rolls are'of solid metal and re's'tby gravity upon. their respective lower rolls '14, being held rot'atablv' and removably in such-positionby the confinement of their end gudgeons inthe sup'pcrts 16 as shown int hed-rawings. The series of delivery rolls is separated from-the doffer comb'by a plate orlbar 1 7 whichis secured to or against the rear sides of the supports 16, and supports a series oftrumpets 18, of which there are 7 two for each pair of rolls and one for'each section of the divided-fleece. The said sections-immediately on leaving the doffer comb,mov'e horizontally to their respective trumpets from which they are drawn by the delivery rolls, being thereby subjected to the first condensation. The delivery rolls are provided with clearers119, of a generally triangular shape, as" indicated in Fig. 4, so
that they will fit in the crotch between the rolls and the forward side of the trumpet plate 17'. Such 'clearers are desirablymade offmetal and solid so as to add weight to p the upperdelivery rolls 15 and thereby dwi'seso-arranged as to give an equal weight assist inthe drawing of the fleece through the trumpets. Since the upper rolls rest upon the two fleece sections or slivers at substantially equal distances from their ends the pressure 'imposed on each of the two slivers is substantially equal and as each pair of-rolls has the same size and w ight and is equipped with the same weightof clearer, the slivers emerging from 't herolls are thereby equally condensed. Thetapes'cn the doifer cylinder are likep'er linearunit toeach fleece section, so that tl-ie' sl'iversthatfmove from the'card to-the sliver table of the front are thus substantially identical in their physical condition.
From the delivery side of the calender rolls the slivers pass upwardly and without support to the lower-,edge of an apron 20, which is part of the sliverv table 21. This table is supported on end standards or legs 22 and overlies the set of sliver cans '23.
The apron 20 is rearwardly and downwardly inclined, toward the d0fl 'er"comb and the condensing mechanism, so" that each sliver is thus unsupported for an equal distance. 7
The sliyers are moved along the smooth surface of ,the apron and the flat surface of the table'by means of a second series of pairs of calenderro-lls by which they are further condensed and delivered into the cans.
There is one pair of such rolls assigned to each sliver'arranged above and eccentrically to the axis ofrotation of the can beneath it to which it delivers. In the preferred form;
of the invention, the eight or more sliver cansare arranged in two transverse rows of'four cans each and the table is apertured' above each can to 'let' the sliver through as wellas to accommodate and expose the calender rolls. The rolls for the sliver cans of the first row are arranged in confined removably, in brackets 27. Each upper roll is provided with a clearer 28,
which rests upon it. This clearer maybe swung back on its hinges when desired and the upper roll may be removed from its working position in the obvious manner.
The'roll shaft 25 is connected by a beveled i shaft gearing disposed beneath the table (see dottedlines in Figs. 1 and 2) with an other lower roll shaft such as 29, of. which there may be as many as there are rows of cans. In the case of a twelve-sliver machine there willbe two additional roll-shafts like 29, under thesliver table,'each'operating a transverse rowof four cans, and all driven from the first roll-shaft 25. v The shafts of thesecond, or second and third rows, may
be'and preferably are identical with the shaft 25, except for the locatirn of the lower rolls 30 thereon, which are arranged to provide a substantially straight course for each sliver. ,Fach' lower .roll supports an upper roll 31, equi ed with a holding bracket 27 and a clearer 28. y v e The set ofroll-shafts 25 and 29 i'nthe present case are driven'p'ositively and in unison with; the card, for which purpose they are" geared by means tr inclined bevel gear shaft 32,- With the transverse counter-shaft 11 above referred to. The shaft 32 is journaled at one end on thesliver table and at its lower end in a bracket 33 on the card, at which point it carries a pinion engaged by a drive pjinion on the countershaft 11. The counter-shaft also drives, through appropriate bevel gears, the upright shaft 34, which actuates the coiler mechanism. The latter is placed between the end standards or legs of the table and comprises a plurality of rotary plates or stands 35, upon which the sliver cans-are adapted to be placed and by which they are rotated when receiving the slivers The stands 35 are mounted in a suitable casing and inter-connected by the gearing, as indi cated by the dotted pitch circles, and driven from a spur gear at the foot of theishaft 34. All the cans are driven in the same direction. I
In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 4, the construction and operation throughout is the same as in the form first described and the calendar rolls 36 are disposed in the same relation on the sliver tableas the rolls Qand 26, but they are horizontal instead of one above the other and both are driven positively from the supports a trumpet 38, andmay, if desired,
form part of a usual stop motion mecha nism. The trumpets 38 point downwardly and directly into the bite of the rolls and their orifices are smaller than the orifice of the trumpet 18 on the card, so that each fleece section is condensed first only to such extent as may be necessary to enable it to be lifted to the height ofthe sliver table and then is further and finally condensed just as it enters the can. It will be understood that the can stands for this form may be the same as shown in Fig. 3.
Claims:
1. In apparatus of the kind described, a divided card having a sliver can for each section of the divided fleece, a sliver table covering the cans and provided with a sliver apron extending downwardly toward the doifer comb of the card, in combination with means for delivering the fleece-sections from such comb to said apron and for conducting the same along the latter and thence downwardly into their respective sliver cans.
2. In apparatus of the kind described, a divided card having a slivertable placed in front of it provided with a sliver-conducting part extended downwardly therefrom to- Ward the doifer-comb of the card and spaced a substantially uniform distance fromsuch comb,in combination with means on the table for condensing and moving the fleece sections, and a corresponding number of sliver-cans receiving such sections and in which they are coiled.
3. Apparatus of the kind described, comprising a divided card, a plurality of transverse rows of sliver cans in frcnt of such card and a sliver table overlying such cans, in combination with transverse rows of calender rolls on the table respectively adapted to deliver the said divided fleece sections to such cans, the rolls of the first row being spaced to provide passage between them to the rolls of the second row, and means whereby the card drives the said rolls.
4;. Apparatus of the kind described, comprising a divided card, a plurality of transverse rows of sliver cans mounted in front of the doffer-comb thereof, each of such cans being adapted for receiving one of the clivided fleecesections, a sliver table overlying such cans and arranged to receive such sections at a substantially uniform distance from the delivery means of the card, and
means for moving such sections along the table and into their respective cans.
5. Apparatus of the kind described comprising a divided card having a plurality of transverse rows of sliver cans mounted in front thereof and adapted each to receive one of the divided sections of the fleece, and
a sliver tableoverlying the cans and provided with pairs of condensing rolls for moving the fleece-sections along the table and into the cans, in combination with means for driving such rolls including a pinion mounted on and driven by the card and drive shaft connecting said shaft with the said rolls.

Apparatus of the kind described, comprising a divided card and a series of rows of sliver cans disposedin front of the same, and a condenser and delivery means'adapted .to receive each divided fleece sectionderectly from the dofler of the card, in combination with asliver table overlying the rows of cans and provided with calender rolls for each fleece-section eccentrically mounted with respect to their respective sliver cans, and means for driving such rolls to move the fleece-sections from the said condenser and delivery means, along the-table and into their respective cans.
7. Apparatus of the kind described comprising a divided card, a series of rows of sliver cans mounted in front of the same. a trumpet for each fleece-section adjacent the doifer-comb and means for drawing the condensed fleece substantially horizontally therefrom and through the trumpets, "in
combination with a sliver table overlying the cans and second trumpets thereon hav- 7 ing pairs of calendarrolls for delivering the sections from such trumpets into the cans.
' 8. Apparatus of the kind described com the card for operation thereby.

Apparatus of the kind described com prising a substantially flat table, a divided card and means for delivering the sections of its divided'fleece upwardly to such table, a pair of calender rolls mounted in or below an aperture in the table for each fleece, and a rotary sliver can beneath the table and each pair of rolls, and eccentrically disposed with reference to the latter.

Apparatus of the kind described comprising a substantially flat table, a divided cardhaving a dofl'er comb below the table and means at the same level for condensing and delivering the sections of its divided fleece upwardly to such table, in combinaticn with means on the table for advancing such fleece-sections therealong, and a corresponding number of sliver cans beneath the table for receiving such sections.

12; Carding apparatus of the kind set forth, comprising I a card provided with j'mean's for subdividing its fleece into a plurallty of sectlons andrhaving a condensing trumpetiand delivery means for each's'uch section, in'crmbination with coiler front apparatus comprising a sliver table adapted to be independently mounted in front of the said delivery means and including a pair of 7 front of the card,and adapted to accommodate a group of shver cans thereunder, in

Coiler front apparatus for divided cards comprising a separate table adapted for receiving the divided fleece sections and having legs adapted to rest on the floor adjacent the front of the card, a plurality of rotary can stands beneath the table, rolls on the'table above the can stands, and means whereby the said stands'an'd rolls are both driven by the card. 15. Coiler front apparatus for divided cards comprising a table structure adapted to receive the divided fleece sections and provided with carddriven rolls for advancing the sections therealong, in combination with a can-stand structure beneath such table structure adapted to support a series of sliver cans beneath said rolls, said structur'e comprising a series of rotary can stands, a
slivers or rovings, of a coiler front mounted in front of said rolls and provided with calender rolls receiving the slivers therefrom, a series of cans disposed beneath said calender rolls, one for each sliver, and means for coiling said slivers therein.
17. Apparatus 'of the kind described, adapted to produce roving capable of direct introduction to the slubber, comprising, in combination with a card having a dolfer cylinder, a dofier-comb operating substantially at the level of the horizontal radius of said cylinder and means for subdividing its fleece into a plurality of narrow sections, a series of trumpets and delivery'rolls receiving the said sections directly from the dofier comb and at substantially the level thereof, coiler front mechanism comprising a series of calender rolls journaled in front of said trumpets and rolls and above the level thereof, a row of cans having their tops disposed beneath the said rolls and also above said level and each adapted to re ceive one of said sections, and means for individually rotating the cans. j

Apparatus of the kind described, comprising the combination of a card having a single do-lfer cylinder and comb delivering its fleece in a plurality of narrow sections, a trumpet directly receiving each section from the comb, a driven delivery roll journaled in 'flxed bearings in front of all said trumpets, andca' series-of ai-ined shorter-rollsrestedon and rotated by said driven r011, each said In testimony whereof, I have signed this shorter r011 nipping the fleece sections dispecification in the presence of two wit- 11 rectly issuing from two adjacent trumpets nesses.
