Description
B. A. MAXWELL.
ARTISTS EASEL AND CABINET. APPLICATION FILED JULY 30. 1915.
1,175,070. I Patented Mar. 14,1916.
' All BARAK A. MAXWELL, OF WELLS, MAINE ARTISTS EASEL AND CABINET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 14., 1916.
Application filed July 30, 1915. Serial No. 42,728.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BARAK A. MAXWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wells, in the-county of York and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Artists Easels and Cabinets, of which the following 1s a speclfication.
The object of this invention is to provide a portable easel and cabinet for artlsts which may be compactly arranged so that when closed there are no projecting parts, which when open may be held upon the lap and which has compartments to contain all the usual articles required by artists, including paints, brushes, palettes and material to be painted.
It also relates to means for supporting the work including means adjustable for holding work of various sizes.
The drawings herewith accompanying and making a part of this application show a very convenient embodiment of my invention.
In said drawings Figure 1 is a perspec tive view of my improved apparatus, the work supporting part being shown open; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the cover and panel holder taken on line ww, Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a cross section of the movable work holder.
Same reference characters indicate like parts in the several figures.
In said drawings 1 is the vase upon which a plurality of compartments is mounted, one of which compartments 2 is provided with a cover 3 hinged thereto at the end in any convenient manner, as by hinges 4. This cover is adapted to be held open at any convenient angle by means of a strut 5 one end of which is pivotally mounted in said compartment as at 6 and the other end offset and adapted to take into any one of a series of holes 7 in said cover. A strut on each side may be used if desired. The strut is resilient and when it is desired to close down the cover the strut is bent until the end is free from the hole and it may be then turned on its pivot and allowed to enter the hole 8 in the side of the compartment. The sides of the cover are provided on their in ner faces with grooves 9 and the bottom of the cover is provided with grooves 10. These grooves are adapted to receive the panels or boards which are to be painted. Mounted in said grooves are adjustable holders 11 provided at each end with tongues 12 adapted to take into grooves 9. The under side of the holder is provided with a groove 19 to receive the upper end of the panel or board and the holder is free to move up or down in the grooves so as to be adjusted to a panel of any height. It will be noted that panels of less width than the cover may be held thereby as illustrated by the panel 13 in Fig. 1. Compartment 14 has a hinged cover 15. This compartment is adapted to contain paints, brushes, etc. while the other compartment may be used as a palette or to hold a palette. Preferably when the cover 3 is closed down it would be level with cover 15. When the cover 3 is closed it may be locked by a piv oted hook 16 engaging a pin 17. Cover 15 may be secured by similar means. A handle 18 is attached to the end of the case.
The advantages of my improved easel and cabinet are many: It is simple in structure and operation, may be supported on the lap if desired, is adapted to contain all the articles which an artist may need in his work and is adapted to support panels and boards of varying sizes, both as to height and to width.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, a base, a palette compartment mounted thereon, a cover pivotally attached thereto and provided with grooves 011 the inner face of its sides and bottom and a holder provided with end tongues adapted to enter and slide in said grooves and having a panel receiving groove in its under side adapted to cooperate with said bottom groove to hold a panel, said holder lying wholly inside the cover when the cover is closed.
2. In a device of the character described, a base, a palette compartment mounted thereon, a cover pivotally attached thereto and provided with grooves on the inner faces of its sides and bottom, means for supporting the cover open at an angle. to the base and a holder provided with end tongues adapted to enter and slide in said grooves and having a panel receiving groove in its under side adapted to cooperate with said bottom groove to hold a panel, said holder lying wholly inside the cover when the cover is closed.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature.
BARAK A. MAXl VELL.
