CAR-BODY-UNDERFRAME CONSTRUCTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 22, 1916..
Application filed July 16, 1911. Serial No. 687,641.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known'that I, OSWALD S. PULLIAM, of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Body-Underframe Constructions, of which the following is a specification.
In some types of car constructions it is highly desirable to employ continuous center-sills, that is to say, center-sills extending lo itudinally from end to end of the car 1 (iii; underframe. In this type of construction, however, considerable trouble has heretofore been encountered due to buckling of the center-sills between the respective bodybolsters and the respective end-sills of the underframe due to the strains to which these portions and the center-sills are subjected by thedraft rigging.
An object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved car body underframe employing continuous center-sills in combination with means coacting with the draft rigging and body-bolster to relieve those portions of the center-sills between the body-bolster and end-sill from the strains and shocks to which said portions are ordinarily subjected.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates applications of my invention, Figure 1 is a plan of one end of a car body underframe constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 11-11 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3. a cross sectional view taken on line IIII-II of Fig. 1; and Fig.4, a plan of a modified form of construction.
Referring to the drawing, 2 designates the side-sills of the underframe, and 3, an endsill thereof of the usual and well known construction.
The center-sills, designated by the numeral 4, are preferably of channel form and extend longitudinally of the car from one end-sill to the other end-sill. As illustrated, the center-sills are provided with slots 5 adapted to receive the followers 6 and 7 of the draft rigging. In the form of Fig. 1,
each of the center-sills is provided with a follower stop 8, secured thereto by rivets or other suitable means.
In the construction of the body-bolster as illustrated, I have shown a two-part or divided body-bolster 9 having the parts secured to the center-sills in any suitable manner.
bolster,
It is evident that my invention may be employed with a different construction of draft rigging than that shown, and that my invention will relieve the center-sills of the shocks and strains above mentioned whether employed in connection. with the draft rigging illustrated or some other well known form.
What I claim is:
1. In a metallic car body under frame and in combination, an end sill, a metallic body bolster, metallic center sills extending through the bodv bolster to the end sill, and slotted to permit follower movements, dra ft rigging including a follower structure, and an integral metallic diaphragm having opposite faces in contact with and secured to the center sills in the plane of the bolster, said diaphragm projecting forwardly a distance less than the distance between the bolster and end sill, said diaphragm also including a follower-engaging member positioned relative to predetermined sill slots to prevent rigging strain under buffer pressure on the center sills intermediate the bolster and end sill.
2. In a metallic car body underframeand in combination, an end sill, a metallic body bolster, metallic center sills extending through the body bolster to the end sill and slotted to permit follower movements, draft rigging including a follower structure, and an integral metallic diaphragm having opposite faces in contact with and secured to the center sills in the plane of the bolster,
said diaphragm projecting forwardly 0f the body bolster a, distance sullieient to previcle :1 stop for the forward follower and insulieient to extend to the plane of the end sill said furwur ly projeetmg portion being slotted in correspomlence with the sill elocs and having follower engaging membezs p0 smelled relatn'e to the SAM slots and; ndapted to form steps ZlIOi follower movements,
10 sald stops actmg to prevent nggmg stmms OSWALD S. PULLIAM.
