PRIMER FOR GAS-ENGINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 8, 1916.-
Application filed February 6, 1911. Serial No. 606,939.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HERMAN E. WHITING, of Palmyra, in the county of Wayne and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Primers for Gas- Engines, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, and shown in the accompanying drawings. The present invention relates to internal combustion engines, and it has for an object to make provision whereby a thorough mixing of the explosive mixture used in starting the engine takes place prior to its introduction into the cylinders of the engine.
Another object of the invention is to provide for the automatic admissionof air to the explosive mixture whenever the speed of the motor reaches a certain limit.
To these and other ends the invention consists in certain parts and combinations of parts all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims' In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side View of a priming cup with anautomatic air valve; Fig. 2 is a section 'ongthe line a;a of Fig. 1; and, Fig. 3 is a sectional *view through a mixer for the explosive mixture with the priming cup and the air valve shown in vertical section on the line b-b of Fig. 2. I v y In carrying out the invention there isarranged in the connection between the carbureter and the cylinders a mixer which so acts on the explosive mixture that the free particles of gasolene are thoroughly vaporized. The mixer parse is not claimed in this application, but it may be generally de-' scribed'as comprising a casing 1 having an intake 2- and a discharge 3. Within the-casing is arranged a baflie against which the inflowing mixture contacts, the free particles of 'gasolene adhering to the baffle and the vaporized mixture passing the baflie. The baflie in this instance comprises two cone shaped members 4 and 5, the former being imperforate a-nd located in proximity to the intake 2, while the member 5 is per-"- forated and is of larger diameter than the member 4. A pin 6 holds the members 4 and 5 in spaced relation, and mineral wool, asbestos, or other incombustible fibrous material-7 is arranged between the members 4 hills.

The primer in this instance comprises a cup 11 and a lateral screw threaded extension or nipple 12, which engages internal threads v.in a bore leading to the chamber 8, the cup belng connected to the nipple by a passage way 11*. The liquid from the cup may be controlled by a turn plug 13 held to its seat by a spring 14 andadapted to be operated by a handle15.
In order that air may be admitted into the gas conductor between the carbureter and the cylinder to mix with the priming charge, the primer casing maybe provided'with an air supply 16 leading into the passageway 11 between the nipple and the turn'plug, the airsupply being controlled by an auto-" matically opening valve 17 which, in this instance, is in the form of a ball held to its seat 18 by a' helical spring 19. The seat-18' may be arranged in an externally threadedi sleeve 20 which is. adjustable inthe primer casing to vary the pressure of the spring'19 on the valve 17, a nut 21 serving to hold the sleeve 20 in its adjusted position.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'
1. The combination with a gas engine having a plurality of cylinders, and a carburetor, of a connection between the carbureter and the cylinders extending in an upward direction from the 'carbureter, one wall of said connection being provided with a. threaded opening, and an automatic air valve having a threaded nipple fitted in said threaded opening. said valve being adjusted to remain closed at slow speeds of the motor and opening automatically on high speeds to act on the mixture after the latter is'discharged by the carbureter, and a priming chamber connected with the air valve to discharge the fuel by way of the threaded nipple ofthe air valve.
2. A combined primer and air supply for gas engines comprising a casing having an externally-threaded nipple and a fuel cup formed integrally therewith, the fuel cup projecting upwardly and the nipple proiect ing horizontally, a turning plug arranged in horizontal 'alinement with thenipple and in said casing in horizontal alinement with a the nipple and in vertical alinement with the fuel cup, said casingalso having an integral portion depending below the nipple and communicating'with the nipple, a valve seat adjustable on said dependingportion, a ball valve arranged in said depending portion and cooperating with said seat, anda spring operating on the ball valve and housed by said depending portion.
4. A combined primer and air supply for gas engines comprising an externally threaded nipple, a fuel cup, the fuel cup projecting upwardly and the nipple projecting horizontally, a turning plug arranged to connect or disconnect the fuel cup with the nipple, a'chamber also having connection with the nipple, a valve seat adjustable in said chamber from the exterior thereof, a ball valve cotiperating with the seat, and a helical spring arranged within said chamber and bearing against the ball valve.
