Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented m. s, rare.
Application filed September 7, 1915. 7 Serial No. 49,241.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERNARD C. ToRnLLn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brooms, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to improvements in brooms of the character which comprise detachable handles, and consists in certain details of construction and arrangements of parts whereby I provide an improved and durably constructed broom-head which is tightly bound and the stitchings of which are prevented from being cut when. brought into contact with other objects in the use of the broom.
In the accompanying drawing, which forms a part hereof, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved broom; Fig. 2, an end elevation; Figs. 3, 4 and 5 detail sectional views on the dotted lines 33, 4.t, and 5-5, respectively; and Fig. 6 a fragmentary perspective of the binder and guard forming part of my invention.
In said drawing, 5 indicates the broom wisps which are bound together at one end by clamping members 6, 7 disposed at opposite sides, each of which terminate at their upper side in a smooth tapered socket member 8, 9, both constituting a split socket, said clamping members and wisps being secured together by hollow rivets 10. One side of each of the ends of the clamping members are cut at an angle, as 12, so that these ends will extend beyond each other to be tightly clamped against the broom material in a finished manner, without over-lapping, which latter method would not produce a uniform result or appearance at all times, especially when the broom material is irregular in quality.
I am aware that a threaded socket has been employed in broom structures, but it is found in practice that the Wooden handle inserted therein has a tendency to become unscrewed when sweeping and is therefore loose and unsatisfactory. The socket 8, 9, which I employ is constructed of smooth material and tapered in form toward the broom-head, which socket is surrounded by a movable ferrule, 13, of similar formation,
said socket being designed to receive a tapered and sharp pointed handle, 14, which is forced down. therethrough into the broom material to a tight fit, and is preferably further secured by a pin, 15, inserted through one of the clamping members as shown. Beneath the clamping members the broom corn is sewed together by stitches, 16, or bound in any suitable manner,'as will be readily understood.
In the use of brooms in manufacturing and other establishments they are frequently rendered unfit for use by coming in contact with machinery and sharp objects, causing the stitching to be cut and the broom material to spread out, and in this manner many brooms become a loss after slight use. To prevent this waste I provide my improved binder and protector, which comprises a band, 18, of sufficient width to surround the broom stitchings, and which is maintained in position by a hanger, 19, through which socket 8, 9, is inserted, the members, 20, of which hanger lie on opposite sides of the broom, and being so formed as to embody a spring portion, at 21, which grips the broom just beneath the clamping members 6, 7 and is thus held securely in position.
By constructing my improved broom in the manner disclosed I insure a durable and neatly designed article and in addition to being bound by the clamping members and stitching as stated, the wisps are securely retained in position by the protecting guard which I employ.
I claim as my invention:
1. A broom comprising a pair of damp ing members each embodying a smooth tapered socket member, a mass of wisps held between said members, hollow rivets extending through said members and wisps for securely binding the same, a tapered ferrule surrounding said socket members, and a tapered sharp pointed handle secured in said socket members.
2. A broom comprising a pair of clamping members each embodying a smooth tapered socket member, the ends of each of said clamping'members being cut at an angle and extending beyond each other in clamping position, a mass of stitched wisps held between said members, hollow rivets extending through said members and wisps for se- In testimony whereof I affix my signature curely binding the same, a tapered ferrule in presence of two Witnesses. surrou'ridiligsziid sbc'ket members; pointed BERNARD TORELLE handle secured in said socket members, and
a binding and protecting guard supported Witnesses:
by said socket members zind covering the LEiiR.-GiARBER-, stitched portion of said wisps. Y O. D. MORRISON.
