Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM H. POTTER, citizen of the United States, residing at Cleghorn, in the county of Cherokee and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Breech-Loading Shotguns and Rifles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to breech-loading guns and more especially to an improved combined breech-loading shot gun and rifle.
An objectof the invention is to combine in a single organization a repeating or breech-loading rifle and a repeating or breech-loading shot gun, the mechanism constituting the respective devices being substantially in duplicate and so relatively situated as to permit of rapid firing action of either or both should occasion demand.
A further object of the invention is to generally improve the construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims. I

Referring now to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates the stock or handle, 2 the receiver, and 3 the trigger guard, any and all of the several parts of which may be modified in construction without departing in any way from the spirit of my invention as hereinafter claimed. Fastened to the receiver 2 in any manner common to the art is a double barrel structure 41, one of the barrels having a bore and chamber designed to receive a rifle cartridge and the other a shot cartridge to in this manner provide what I have termed a combined repeating or breechloading shot gun and rifle.

Any suitable follower means or feed mechanism may be associated with the respective magazines that the cartridges, in actual practice, may be fed automatically to the receiving carrier 6 therefor.
In view of the fact that the operating mechanism for the shot gun arrangement is substantially a duplicate of the operating mechanism comprising the rifle arrangement, I shall proceed to describe one of said mechanisms in detail intending that the numerals relating to the ensuing description be applied to the duplicate mechanism shown.
As suggested, 6 designates as an entirety the carrier. Said carrier is pivoted as at 7 interiorly of the receiver 2 and provided with a cam surface 8 located to engage an enlargement 9 or correlated surface formed upon the bolt 10 of the firearm. The bolt 10 is of an accepted design and construction in that it is provided with a spring actuated firing pin 11. The bolt on the other hand is however novel in that it is reciprocable and turnable in a breech-loading operation and so located with respect to the hammer 12 of the device as to engage therewith during its sliding movement in one direction to cock the firearm and permit subsequent firing thereof through manipulation of a trigger and associate mechanism designated as an entirety, I3.
An extension 14 is formed integrally with the bolt 10 to normally extend laterally thereof whereby to fit a recess 15 therefor, the said extension when thus within the recess precluding movement of the bolt. The bolt 10 is cut away as indicated at 15 to provide a shoulder or abutment 16 upon the exterior surface thereof. To actuate the bolt, it is but necessary to impart to the extension 14 a quarter-turn that it may be removed from the recess 15 therefor. Said extension having been moved to assume a substantially vertical position, it is apparent that a guide slot 17 formed in the receiver may, if the bolt 10 is drawn back, receive and direct the extension and consequently the bolt that the latter may engage with the hammer 12 for the purpose before stated and the lug or cam surface 9 engage with the cam 8 to swing the carrier 6 about its pivot 7 and, throu hsu h ovem nt, Wi hd aw a r sh plete extraction. A lip 21 is made integralp for in a manner permitting utilization of a cartridge fronr the magazine and autos matically position such, fresh cartridge in line with the bore of the barrel to subsequently permit of its movement into the firing chamber thereof through a return movement of thebolt. An extractor 18 is formed on the bolt 10 to engage with the rim of the cartridge fired that the empty shellmay be withdrawn from the firing chamber automatically. Movement of the bolt 10 in the manner just described is necessary prior to a firing action incident to use.
The carrier 6 in its preferred embodiment is designed to provide two pairs of parallel spaced arms 19 and 20, the lower pair, 19, affording a support for the fresh cartridge and the latter pair a supportfor the discharged cartridge during movement of the former from a position within the magazine to a position in line with the firing chamber and the latter from a position within the firing chamber to a position resulting in a comkilled without necessitating the employment of two separate guns by the hunter.
the form of my invention, illustrated in the drawings and-referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most eificient and practical; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required, without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention, as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a breech-loading mechanism for firearms, a pivoted carrier, arms arranged in pairs to form a part of said carrier, one pair of the mentioned arms affording a support for the cartridges applied to said breech-loading mechanism and the other pair of arms affording a support for the cartridges extracted from the barrel, and means to oscillate the carrier during operation.

The mechanism utilized to limit the re ciprocatory movement of the bolt 10 consists; of a pawl 22 pivoted as at 23 and springsipbarrel, stock and receiver; of a breech-loa-dpressed as at 24, the former, pawl 22, beingl-l ing mechanism comprising a pivoted carrier, positioned to engage with the shoulder arms arranged in pairs andin parallelism when the bolt shall have been withdrawn a to form a part of said carrier, one pair of the distance permitting of such engagementg mentioned arms affording a support for'the Said pawl22 is located at one side of the cartridges applied to said breech-loading mechanism and the other pair of arms afreceiver 2 and in such proximity to the bolt as to freely contact therewith in the manner 'fording a support for the cartridges extractshown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. By duplicating the mechanism hereinbefore described upon the opposite sides of the partition 25, it is evident that in a single instrument or. organization, a means has been provided wherein a repeating shot gun firing effect and a repeating rifle firing effect may be obtained, the desired result coming from the association of the two devices. If desired, movablesight pieces designated respectively 26 and 27 may be mounted to operate upon support pieces 28 and 29 thereoperation thereof, substantially as described.
3. Ina firearm, the combination with a barrel, stock and receiver, of a breech-loading mechanism comprising a pivoted carrier,
toform a part of said carrier, one pair of the mentioned arms affording a support for the cartridges supplied to said breech-loading mechanism and the other pair of arms afiording a support for the cartridges extracted from the barrel, a cam surface formed upon the carrier, a sliding bolt, and a correlated cam surface formed upon the single sight for either or both devices. It is necessary, of course, if the sight pieces are thus used, that they be shifted transversely of or across the barrel structure 4.
From the foregoing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it is evident that a single firearm may be operated to discharge unlike cartridges or cartridges of surface that the carrier may be actuated, and means directly limiting movement of the bolt. v

In a firearm, the combination with a stock, receiver and barrel, of a breech-loading mechanism including a magazine, a carrier pivoted within the receiver to transfer the cartridges from said magazine to the barrel, arms arranged in pairs and in parallelism to form a part of the carrier,-one pair of the mentioned arms affording a support for the cartridges supplied thereto from the the gun need not be retaken as a result of the different caliber cartridge to be fired; and thatbig or little game may be'hunted and In reduction to practice, I have found that 2.
