Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 25, rare.
Application filed February 6, 1915. Serial No. 6,613.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARNOLD ANnnnsnN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harris, in the county of Osceola and State of Iowa, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Back-Rest Attach ments for 5563135, of which the following is a specification. I
The present invention relates to a back rest attachment for seats, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which embodies novel featuresof construction whereby it can be readily applied to any of the conventional forms of seatordinarily provided upon agricultural ma chines and the like. i
Further objects of the'invention are to provide a device of this character which is simple and inexpensive in its construction, which can be easily and quickly applied to the seat or removed therefrom, which will provide a comfortable support for theback, and which will not be in the way or interfere with the free movements of the person upon the seat.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following de scription and accompanying drawing, in which I Figure 1 is a side elevation of a seat provided with a back rest constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 8 is an enlarged sectional view through one of the seat engaging clamp members. Fig. f is a detail perspective view of the frame of the back rest. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail sectional view showing the manner of adjustably connecting the back rest strip to the back rest frame.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
For the purpose of illustration the invention is shown as applied to a seat 1 of the type commonly employed upon agricultural machines and the like, said seat being mounted upon the usual standard 2. The sides and rear end of the seat are curved up.
an upper clamping finger 3 and a lower clamping block 4. The clamping blocks at each have a toe portion 4k which fits against the exterior of one of the upturned sides of the seat, and a heel portion 4* which projects rearwardly from the seat and is formed with an opening 5 loosely receiving one of the side bars 6 of the back rest frame. A
set screw 7 is provided for locking the said side barin an adjusted position and holding it against moving upwardly or downwardly while the back rest is in use.
The clamping block 4 of each of the clamps A is provided at an intermediate point in its length with a notched seat 8 adapted to receive and [it against the flange 1 of the seat and also with a notched seat 9 adapted to receive the upper end of the clampingiinger 3. This clamping finger 3 has an angular formation, being bent to provide the two arms 3 and 8 which are dis posed at an angle to each other. The lower arm 3 has an opposed relation to the toe 4 of the block 4: and cooperates therewith to grip the, edge of the seat 1, while the upper arm 3* of the clamping finger is engaged by a clamping bolt 10 passing through both the finger and the block, the extremity of the said upper arm 3 of the finger resting upon the seat 9. By tightening the clamping bolt 10 the lower arm 3 of the clamping finger can be drawn toward the toe portion 4 of the block 4 so that the edge of the seat is securely gripped between the two members and the clamp is held rigidly in position;
The side bars 6 of the back rest frame have the lower ends thereof extended forwardly to provide lateral arms 6 which engage the bottom of the seat 1 so as to provide braces or spring supports for the back rest frame. The upper ends of the side bars 6 of the back rest frame are connected by a back rest strip 11 which is adjustably mounted thereon. means may be provided for mounting this back rest strip 11 upon the side bars 6,
although in the present instance it is connected thereto by means of bolts 12 which Any suitable I pass through slots 14 in the side bars 6 and can be adjusted up and down therein.
With the construction illustrated and described it will be understood that the back rest attachment can be very quickly applied to any of the conventional forms ofseats by fitting the clamps A upon the rear edge thereof and then suitably adjusting the back rest frame in the clamps. A comfortable rest is thus provided for the back and the device will in no manner interfere with the free movements of the person upon the seat.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A back rest attachment for seats, including a pair of clamps each of which comprises a clamping block formed with a toe portion adapted to engage the seat and a heel portion projecting rearwardly from the seat, a notched seat being provided between the heel portion and toe portion, a clamping finger having one end thereof in engagement with the notched seat while the opposite end thereoficooperates with the toe of the block to grip the edge of the seat, and a clamping bolt engaging the clamping finger and clamping block, a back rest frame formed with side bars adjustably mounted upon the heel portions of the clamping blocks, and a back rest bar applied to the said frame.
2. A back rest attachment for seats, in cluding corresponding clamping blocks formed with toe portions adapted to fit against the exterior of the edge of the seat and heel portions adapted to project rearwardly from the seat, each of the clamping blocks being provided at an intermediate point in its length with a pair of notched seats, one of which receives the flange of the seat, a clamping finger for each of the clamping blocks, said clamping fingers being formed with two angularly disposed arms one of which is seated in the other notched seat of the clamping block, while the other arm cooperates with the toe portion of the clamping block to grip the edge of the seat, clamping bolts connecting the clamping fingers and clamping blocks, a back rest frame formed with side bars which are adjustably mounted upon the heel portions of the clamping blocks, and a back rest bar mounted upon the said frame.
3. A back rest attachment for seats, including corresponding clamping blocks formed with toe portions adapted to engage the exterior of the sides of the seat and heel portions adapted to project rearwardly from the seat, each of the clamping blocks being formed at an intermediate point in its length with a pair of notched seats one of which receives the edge flange of the seat, a clamping finger for each of the clamping blocks, said clamping finger being formed with two angularly disposed arms one of which is seated in the other notched seat of the clamp ing block while the other arm cooperates with the toe portion of the clamping block to grip the edge of the seat, clamping bolts connecting the clamping fingers and clamping blocks, a back rest frame formed'with Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
