Description

' eyes.
i @FFQEQ JAMES WARD "HOLLAND, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
Patented Jan. 318, gi,
which loosely embrace the legs l0, so as to WASHBOARD.
111059,03?, Specification of Letters atent.
` Application led ctober l2, 1915. Serial No. 55,469.
To all whom. 'it may concern.'
lie it known that Jam-:s lV. HoLLi-xxn, a citizen ot' the United States, and a resident of Newark, in the county of` Essex and State ot' New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved ll'ashboard, ot' which the following is a li'ull. clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a washboard provided with yielding means against which the person usingthe board may bear so that the said means will yield to the pressure olE a, washwoman instead of otlferinjg an unyielding resistance which is liable to result in inj u ry.
Objects of my invention are to provide a yielding' means `for the indicated purpose adapted to be applied to an ordinary wasliboard; to provide an attachment ot' the indicated character havingr increased ellioiency and to provide a simple, strong and durable construction which will be unfailinjnr in perfol-Illing its function.
The iinvention will be particularly exv plainel in the'speeilic description following'.
Reference is to be had to thj accompanying drawings formingh a part ot this specilieation in which similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Finurey l is a t'ront elevation of a washboard equipped with my invention; and Fi. 2 is a. cross section on the. line Fig'. 1.
ln carrying out my invention in accordance with the illustlaited example,A the washboard may be ot' the usual form presenting side bars l()` thc rubbing board ll. Vtop cross bar l2, and. lower cross bar '123, the sides being extended as at l0L below the cross bar 1S to pro-villelegs in the ordinary manner.
lvly improved attachment comprises a cross bar ll. disposed above the ixed cross bar 12 ol2 the washboard and separate from the latter. llxtendini?r downwardly from the crossbar llat each side is a` guide rod l5. 'l`lie rods l5, have `raided movement in suitable guides ll, here shown as eres on each side l0. ol lhe washboard. ln practice the guides l may consist of ordinary screw- .f'lt lhe lower 'ends the guide rods l5 are offset and given the form ot loops 17,
slide .t'reely thereon. Beneath the offset loops 1T, compression springs 18, are provided on the legs l0, extendingr about. the latter. The springs 18. may be sustained in any suitable manner; in the present instance pins lf) are provided in the legs 10a, beneath said springs.
With the washboard equipped with my attachment, it Awill be clear that a person 1n rubbingr clothes on the washboard, will be protected zleaiiist the unyielding resistance ot the fixen elements of the board, because the, contact will be with the cross bar 14, which will yield to the pressure, the shock -beinpd transmitted tothe springs and ab` sorbed by the latter.
it will be seen that the form of the elements enter-innr into my attachment is such as to permit of their ready application t0 ordinary washboards. idoreover the construction and arrangement ot the parts are such as to insure strength and durability, and to reduire no great degree of care on the part ot those usiner or handling' the washboard equipped with the invention.
Having: thus described mv invention I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. A washboa rd having yielding;` means at the. top thereof to receive the pressure of a person bearing?r againstthe board in washine` said means including a Cross bar above the. top ot' the board and movable relatively thereto` coil springs supported on and embracing' the legs of the wasliboard below the rubbing` surface thereof, and lateral inembers extending from the said cross ba ,and engaged by said springs to yieldingly sustain the cross bar in position.
2. An attachment for application to a washboard to afford a yielding bearing member against which the person using the board may exert pressure, said attaclnuent 'comprising a cross bar adapted to be disposed above the washboard. froide rods extending' forwardly Yfrom the said cross bar and of a length to position their lower ends at the legs of the board. means adapted to be secured to a washboard at the side and affording guides for the said rods, and springs adapted to` be positioned on the legs of a washboard, the said guide rods having members to bear against said springs; together 5 with means to secure the springs in position on the legs of the board.
naine to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
JAMES 'WARD HOLLAND.
Witnesses ROY HOLLISTER,
In testimony whereof have signed my WALTER D. VAN RIPER.
