To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE P. Evnns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brookings, in the county of Brookings, State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drill-Press Attachments for Auger-Braces; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to boring and drilling devices, particularly to a device of this character especially adapted for bench use, and has for its object the provision of a novel drill press attachment for auger braces, whereby a drill press is formed incorporating the auger brace as an important feature.
An important object is the provision of a device of this character which may be readily adjusted to allow the use of drills or bits of diiierent lengths.
Another object is the provision of a device of this character which will securely hold the auger brace so that it will be incapable of any movement other than the revoluble movement necessary for boring or drilling and the proper longitudinal movement.
A further object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple, inexpensive in manufacture, efiicient and durable in service, and a general improvement of the art.
l/Vith these and other objects and advantages in view, my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure l is a front elevation of my device, incorporating an auger brace, Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof, Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and, Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional View on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the draw ings, the numeral 5 designates a base of any suitable material, such as wood, adapted to be secured upon the top of a workbench, or adapted to form, itself, the top of the bench. Secured upon the base 5 is an upright 6 which may be held more firmly and rigidly in place by suitable brace rods 7. A movable bar 8 is pivotally secured upon the upper end of the upright 6, as by means of a bolt 9passing through the bifurcated end of the bar 8 and through a selected one of a plurality of holes 10 formed through the upper end of the upright.
Secured upon the bar 8 intermediate its ends, is av socket member llwithin which is adapted to be disposed the hand engaging or breast engaging knob 12 of an auger brace 13. The socket ll eificiently supports the upper end of the auger brace. In order to provide means for securingthe lower end of the brace against movement other than revoluble, I provide an arm 14 apertured at one end for the reception of the shank 15 of a drill or bit carried by the brace 13. The arm 14: is provided at the other end with a collar 16 which is vertically adjustably secured upon the upright 6 preferably by a set screw 17 passing through the collar and engaging the upright. It will thus be seen that the bit and actuating brace will be held in proper alinement and against lateral displacement while in use.
In order to provide means for producing pressure upon the brace in order to cause it to perform the functions of a drill press, I provide the free end of the bar 8 with a pair of pulleys 18 about which is trained a cable 19 trained about a pulley 20 secured on the base 5 and having one end secured upon the base 5 and its other end provided with a stirrup 21 disposed below the base 5 and engageable by the foot of the operator.
In the operation of my device the work to be drilled or bored is placed upon the base 5 and secured thereon in any desired manner. The brace is then put in place with the shank of the bit or drill engaged within the opening in the end of the rod 14, the vertical position of which upon the upright 6 is then adjusted properly. The bar 8 is then moved so that the socket member 11 engages the knob 12 of the brace. The brace may then be turned in the usual manner While the operator presses down upon the bar 8 by inserting his foot within and pressing down upon the stirrup 20. This clownward pressure upon the stirrup will exert a powerful downward pressure upon the brace and cause the bit or drill carried thereby to bite properly into the material being drilled. The provision of the two pulleys on the end of the bar 8 and the one pulley upon the base 5 causes twice as great a degree of pressure to be exerted downwardly upon the bit brace as is exerted by the foot of'the operator.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawing it'will be apparent that I have thus provided a simple, novel and eflicient device for attachment with an auger brace, whereby all the functions of a drill press will be performed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A device of the class described comprising a standard, an arm slidably adjustable thereon, and apertured at its free end to slidably receive a' brace bit and means car- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for ried by the standard for loosely engaging a brace and pressing it downwardly.

A device of the character described comprising the combination of an auger brace with a drill press attachment comprising a base, a vertical standard mounted thereon, a bar vertically adjustably pivoted upon said standard, a socket member carried by said bar and adapted to engage the hand engaging knob of the auger brace, a flexible member connected with the free end of said bar, a stirrup secured upon said flexible member, and an arm engaging the shank of a boring tool" carried by said auger brace,
said arm being vertically adjustable upon said upright.
