To all whom it mag concern Be it known that I, HOWARD L. rem, a citizen of the Uni-ted States, residing at IVilmingtomin the county of New Castle, State of Delaware, have invented new and useful Heater-Boxes, of whichthe following is a specification.
My invention relates to anew and useful heater box for use in a fire box, whereby I am enabled todirect a suitable quantity or amount of heated air into the fire box above the body of'thefuel in order to cause a complete consumptionof the products of combustion and to assist in the combustion of the fuel.

The annexed drawings and the following description set forth in detail one mechanical form embodying the invention, such detail construction being'but oneof various: mechanical forms in which the princlpleof the invention may be used.

Referring to the drawings: It will be understood that my heater box is applicable to be used in any suitable form of a fire box, and, as here shown and described, I have provided the same to the firebox of a locomotive which may be of any suitable or desired type.

as to-di rect the air therefrom forwardly and: across the firebox, as best understood fromrFig 1', so that the air from the re spective nozzles will cross at a-- suitable pointa-bove the fuel in order to thoroughly commingle with the products of combustion, so} that-thesame will be consumed; it being further noted that the direction of travel of the air from the nozzles is in the same natural course and is in the same substantial direction as in the natural flow of the products of combustion, in order to provide that the air passing into the nozzles 12 will be suitably heated. I preferably desire to provide upon the interior of the heater a series or a plurality of extensions or bafiies against which the air impinges in order that the same will be thoroughly heated to the proper temperature.
In the construction shown in Figs. 6 and 7, I have shown the projections or extensions 16, as being suitably curved in order to provide a curved path through which the air passes, imparting a swirl thereto, and so that the air will be suitably heated. In this manner, it will be understood that I provide means whereby the air will be properly and thoroughly heated, before being discharged into the fire box, in order to provide a more perfect combustion than where the air would pass through the heater boxes which are not provided with the extensions or projections. In some instances, I have found it desirable to provide means for injecting steam into the heater boxes and to control the supply of steam thereto, so
that the same can be regulated, or entirely cut off.
As here shown, I provide a pipe 17 connected with a suitable part of the boiler and having a controlling valve 18, which it will be understood, can be located at a suitable point in the cab for easy access of the engineer. The lower end of the pipe 17, is provided with the branches 19 and 20, one of be properly heated and discharged into the firebox to assist in the complete consumption'of the products of combustion.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is V.
1. In a device of the character stated, a boiler, a fire box therefor, a suitable grate, a heater box in said fire box adapted-to direct air thereinto and spiral flanges projecting from the inner wall of said heater box forming spiral passages and a: central passageway with which the said spiral passages communicate throughout their entire extent.
2. In a device of the character stated, a boiler,'a'fire-box therefor, a suitable grate,
a heater box in said fire-box adapted-tedirect air thereinto, and spiral flanges projecting from? the inner-wall of said heater box forming spiral passages and a central passageway with which the said spiral passages communicate.
3. In a device of the character stated, a boiler, a fire-box therefor a suitable grate, heater boxes in said fire-box adapted to direct air thereinto, spiral flanges projecting from the inner wall of each of said heater boxes forming spiral passages and a central passageway with which the said spiral passages communicate, and offset discharge portions for said heater boxes arranged to discharge air above the bed of fuel in the direction of the draft and so thatthe discharge therefrom will commingle with each other.
4. Inadevice of'the-eharacter stated, a boiler, a fire-box therefor, a suitable grate, heater boxes in said fire-box adapted to direct air thereinto, spiral flanges projecting from the inner wall of each of said heater boxes forming spiral passages and a central passageway withwhich the said spiral passages communicate, and oifset discharge portions for said heater boxes arranged to discharge air above the bed of fuel in the direction of the draft, said discharge portions being flat and elongated, whereby the discharge therefrom is in sheet form and arranged to commingle with each other.
