Description
M. L. HAWKS.
SHARPENING DEVICE.
ICATlO" man: L 21 APPL n 19! 5. 1,168,32. Patented Jan.18,1916.
York. city, in the county of New York andu use for domestic purposes, and a sharpener that requires butlittle skill or experienceto operate, also having the pro er facilities and. '15
SHARPEN'ING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be .it known that I, Mosns L. HAWKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New State of New York, have invented a new and useful, Sharpening Device, ofwhich-the following is a specification.
The princip'alobgect of the present inven-'.
tion is to provide asimple, eflicient and inexpens ve sharpener for home use 1n sharpening knivesand SClSSOI'S such as are 111 general means for sharpening the knives on both sides of the blade at the same time whereby a saving of time is effected and a more uniform surface, and a more perfect cutting edge is imparted to the knife. I attainthese objects by the mechanism illustrated in the;
accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 Preferably the'two sharpening members are made fromfsheet steel by means of blankingand forming diesafter which the beveled marginal circumference of each memher is provided with file cut sharpening teethf2v andfproperly hardened for the purpose, the two sharpening members are then tightly clamped together between the ends of thehandles or parts that serve as handles in operating the device and which may be joined by means of a double pointedscrew as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, or the samemay be joined by meansof arod or bolt permanently secured in one of the bandle portions and the projecting end either screwed or driven into the other untilthe two sharpening members are clamped to-' gether asshown, at least one of the sharpeningmembers is provided with one or more short radial projections, preferably two in 7 number, as shown at 3,'Figs. 2 and 3, and
. which are bent or turned outward to form bearings for the blades of scissors or shears while being sharpened.
It will be observed that when the two sharpeningmembers are clamped together as shown the beveled sharpeningsurfaces Gopies of this patent may be obtained for Specification of Letters Patent.
is-a plan view of the finished sharpener, Fig. '2 is a longitudinal half sec- E STATES PATENT QFFICE.

forma groove which the knife is drawn and by means ofwhich both sides of the blade of the knife are brought in contact with the cutting'teeth of the sharpening members at the same time during the sharpenmg operation and thus the knife is speedily and thoroughly sharpened requiring but little skill or effort to accomplish.
Scissors or shears are readily sharpened by holding the fiat side of the blade on one of the bearings 3,'which will bring the beveledge of the shear to bear on the cutting teeth of the opposite sharpening member,
"the shear being drawn from .heel. to point across the sharpening surface which speedily sharpens the shears. c
I In'the construction and disposition of the several parts in relation to each other, it will beseen that I have devised and provided a very simple, eflicient and inexpensive knife andscissor sharpener that is adequate and well adapted to general domestic use.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent-is-" Y 1.' A sharpening device. consisting of two centrally perforated sharpening members blanked and formed as described, havinga beveledmarginalsurrace onwhich are file cut sharpenlng teeth, the beveled sharpening surface of said members forming a groove for the made of a knife when the two members are clamped together as shown, the said sharpening members being tightly clamped together between the ends of the handles or parts serving as a handle for same.
2. A knife and scissor sharpener consisting of two-centrally perforated sharpening members circular shaped in theirgeneral contour and having a beveled marginal surface on which are file cut sharpening teeth, the beveled sharpening surface of said 7 members forming a groove for a knife blade when the-two membersare clamped together as shown, at least one of the sharpening members beingprovided with one or more radialprojections bent or turned outward ata more obtuseangle than that of the beveled sharpening surface so as to form a bearing suitable as a guide in sharpening scissors or shears, the said sharpening members being firmly clamped together between the ends of the handles or parts serving as a handle for same.
