To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, STEVE BnNDzsA, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Atlasburg, in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Reclining-Chairs, of which the following is a specification.

The primary object of this invention is to provide a rocking chair that may be readily converted into a reclining chair or sofa being at such times restrained from its rocking movements.

A further object of the device is to provide a chair frame having a hinged back portion and an inclosable foldable foot por tion, the chair being provided with rockers and stationary retaining means therefor.

\Vith these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like-designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device in the open unfolded reclining position. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the device arranged as a rocking chair with the closure portion open. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view thereof with the closure portion closed. Fig. 4t is a perspective view of the foot portion of the device in its lower parallel closed position. Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken through the parts adjacent one of the suspending hooks of the foot portion, and Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view taken ad'acent one corner of the foot portion.

Referring more in detail to the drawings, a chair 10 is provided having substantially the usual form of rockers 11 each of which however is furnished with vertical adjustable screws 12, whereby the chair 1s prevented from shifting upon its rockers when the said. screwsareadjusted to engage the foot portion 1 hooks 45. so

A back or rear frame 13 is hinged as at 1 1 to the chair and is retained in its open reclined position as best illustrated in Fig. 1 by means of hooks 15 carried by the back and adapted for reception within eyes or loops 16 mounted upon the outer sides of the chair arms 17. When the back 13 is in its upright position, the opposite side rails thereof are received within the end notches 18 of the arms 17 and the back is retained in such position by means of relatively short hooks 19 carried by the back and engageable within loops or eyes 20 carried upon the inner edges of the said arms 17, while the longer hooks 15 are then adapted to engage the eyes 21 upon the outer edges of the A swinging frame 22 in the form of a leg support is hinged as at 23 to the head board 2 1 of the chair back, and a swinging latch 25 carried by the lower rail 26 of the chair back is adapted to engage thereover for retaining the same in its closed engagement with the chair back as shown in Fig. 3.

Opposite guide ledges or shelves 27 are secured inwardly of the sides 28 of the chair beneath the chair bottom 29 and such ledges are adapted to slidingly receive a foot piece or portion 30 which latter is provided upon its opposite cut-away edges 31 with metallic inclosing guides 32 for receiving the heads 33 of swinging hook supports 34 which are pivoted as at 35 to the front posts or legs 36 of the chair (see Fig. 4). The 30 is provided at its outer end with a frame 37 constituting supportinglegs and hinged as at 38 to the said foot portion. Sides 39 are hinged as at 10 to the opposite edges of the foot portion 30. while inwardly swinging brackets 41 are hinged as at 42 to the outer ends of the said sides 39. A foot board 43 is hinged as at 44: to the forward edge of the foot portion 30 being downwardly shiftable. When in, this p'osition, hooks 50 carried by the foot arms 39 are engaged within eyes 51] carried by the chair arms 17 and the legs 37 being'mounted upon the floor, the foot portion 30 is firmly retained in its horizontal positionand in alinement with the chair bottom 29.

i The device being in its open reclining position as illustrated in Fig. 1, it will be evitained in that position with the. supporting ,legs 22'closed as illustrated in Fig. 3. By

releasing the hooks 50 and elevating the foot portion 30, the hooks 45 are released from the eyes 46 and the said foot 30 allowed to lower upon the/supporting hooks 34. The foot portion board 43 is then released from the bracket hooks 48'and swung downwardly, while the brackets 41 are swung inwardly and the foot sides 39 swung inwardly thus folding the brackets-upon the top of the foot portion 30 andat which time the elements are in the positions illustrated in Fig. 4. The foot 'portiongmay :be then pushed inwardly beneath the chair bottom 29'and upon the ledges'27 until the said foot portion and the members carried thereby are completely inclosed' beneath the bottom as illustrated in'FigfQ and thereupon the foot portion board 43 may be moved upwardly upon its hinges 44 and closed toward the end of the foot portion 30'and retained in engagement with the forward edge of the chair bottom by means of a swinging latch 52 as best illustrated in F ig."3. The screws 12 are withdrawn upwardly which allows the chair to be freely moved upon its rocker-s11.

It will thus be seen that a serviceable rockprovided which completely incloses a foot portion and "is readily convertiblefinto a reclining chair whenever desired.

A device of the class described comprising a chair, opposite ledges secured in spaced relation beneath the bottom of the chair, swinging hooks carried forwardly of the chair, afoot portion, metallic guides carried by the opposite edges of the said foot portion slidingly receiving the lower ends of the said hooks, eyes positioned upon the forward portion of the said bottom, supportcarried forwardly of the said foot portion, hooks rigidly secured to and extending rearwardly from the said foot within the said eyes when the said foot portion is in horizontal alinement with the said bottom, a closable foot board hinged to the forward end of the said foot portion and in engagement with the forward edge of the said bottom when the device is in its closed position, inwardly foldable'sides carried by the said foot portion, inwardly swinging brackets hinged to the forward ends of the said sides, inwardly projecting hooks carried-by the lower edges of thefsaid brackets, thesaid end board having receiving sockets adjacent its outer edges and in receiving engagement with the said bracket hooks when the device is in its open unfolded position.

A device of the class described comprisingachair, opposite ledges secured in spaced relation beneath the bottom of the chair, swinging hooks carried forwardly of the chair, a foot portion, metallic guides car ried by the opposite edges of the said foot portion slidingly receiving the lower ends of the said hooks, eyes positioned upon the forward portion of the said bottom, supporting legs hingedly carried forwardly of the said foot portion, hooks rigidly secured to and extending rearwardly from the said foot portion and seated within the said eyes when the said footportion is in horizontal alinement withthe said bottomfa closable foot board hinged to'the forward end of the said foot portion and in engagementwith the for- "ward-"edge'pf' the sa d bottom when the ide' vice is in its closed position, inwardly foldable sides carried by the said foot portion, inwardly swinging brackets hinged to the forward ends of the said sides, inwardly projecting hooks carried by the lower edges of the said brackets, the said end board having receiving sockets adjacent its outer edges and in receiving engagement with the said bracket hooks when the device is in its open unfolded position, and a back hingedly 10 mounted to the rear of the said chair.
