Description

PLUMLEIGH A. ROGERS, 0F MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
-f PLATELI-IOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
- Patented J an. Il, 1916.
Application iled July 8, 1915. Serial No. 38,675.
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, PLUMLEIGH A. ROGERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plate Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to means for holding stereotype and other printing plates in frames or chases; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
This invention includes certain improvements for which I filed an application for Letters Patent on March 12, 1914, Serial Number 824,207.
In the drawings, Figure l is a section through a printing plate provided with marginal backing blocks according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the marginal backing blocks with the printing plate and the interior blocks omitted. Fig. 3 is a side view of a printing plate showing a modified arrangement of the backing blocks. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the printing plate shown in Fig. 3, from below. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the backing blocks shown in Fig. 3, from above.
In carrying out this invention the stereotype plate or printing plate 2 has grooves 3 in its lower side edges and these grooves have dovetailed sides 4. Marginal backing blocks are provided and consist of corner blocks 5 and 'intermediate blocks 6. All of these blocks have dovetailed shouldered portions 7 and the corner blocks 5 have their shouldered portions 7 arranged at an angle to each other and upon two adjacent sides, so that the corner blocks cannot slip in clamping the plate. The dovetailed shouldered portions 7 engage with the dovetailed grooves 3 of the printing plate. Interior backing blocks 10 are also provided between the marginal blocks and are arranged under the rinting plate in the usual manner. In all orms of this invention care is taken that all intermediate and interior blocks do not bear against each other in advance of the engagement of the dovetailed shouldered portions with the dovetailed grooves.
The blocks are clamped in any suitable frame or chase in any approved way. The blocks can be made of any convenient size and proportion, and a multiplicity of blocks of all sorts and sizes is provided so as to engage with all sorts and sizes of printing plates.
In some instances two corner blocks are sufficient to hold a printing plate, as shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5, and the grooves in the printing plate dovnot then require to be cut in its edges for the full width and length of the plate. The printing plate shown in these figures is a smaller one than the printing plate shown in Fig. l.
The dovetailed shouldered portions may be omitted from the intermediate blocks 6 when the printing plate is not very large, or fewer of them may be used, but for a large plate the arrangement shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is preferred.
What I claim is:
l. The combination, with a printing plate having dovetailed grooves in its sides, of marginal backing blocks adapted to be clamped in a printing frame, said marginal blocks having dovetailed shouldered portionson two adjacent sides arranged at an angle to each other and adapted to engage with the dovetailed grooves at the corner portions of the printing plate.
2. The combination, with a printing plate having dovetailed grooves in its sides, of marginal backing blocks adapted to be clamped in a printing frame, said marginalr blocks having dovetailed shouldered por tions on two adjacent sides arranged at an angle to each other and adapted to engage with the dovetailed grooves at the corner portions of the printing plate, and inter mediate marginal backing blocks engaging with the said printing plate and arranged between the aforesaid marginal backing blocks. 1
'3. The combination, With a printing plate having dovetailed grooves in its four sldes,
l, on two adjacent sides, and intermediate signature.
of marginal backing blocks adapted t0 be portions, said dovetailed shouldered portions clamped in a printing frame, said marginal engaging Withthe dovetailed grooves of the blocks comprising corner blocks each proprinting plate. l0 vided with dovetailed shouldered portions In testimony whereof I have aHiXed my blocks fitting between the corner blocks and also provided With dovetailed shouldered PLUMLEIGH A. ROGERS.
