Definitions
- the object of the invention is to simplify and improve a machine for working an upper on a last shown and described in an application for a United States patent Serial No. 769,533, filed by me on May 23, 1913.
- the broadest claims are included in the said application.
- Various features have been introduced in the accomplishment of this ob- .ject, as will be hereinafter described.
- the invention is illustrated and described as applied to a lasting machine in which the sides of the upper are pulled by hand.
- the lasting tacks or other fasteners are also applied by hand.
- the particular means employed to pull the sides of the upper and to apply fastenings form no part of the present invention; as various well known devices for this purpose may be employed.
- the new features of the present invention can be applied to the machine commercially known as the Chase bed lasting machine which has grippers to engage and pull the upper at the sides of the last. In such a case the grippers at the sides would preferably be timed to operate to pull the upper after the upper had been pulled lengthwise of the last, as contemplated by this invention.
- FIG. 1 is a side elevation of my improved machine
- Fig. 2 is a plan of the upper part of the machine shown in Fig. 1
- Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1
- Fig. 4 is a detail view of the toe-stop
- Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are detail views illustrating the operation ofv certain parts of the machine which will be hereinafter described
- Fig. 8 is a detail view of a modification of the pulling device particularly adapted for use on heavy work.
- the spindle 4 is fixed in an arm of a bell-crank lever 5 pivotally mounted at 6 on a block 7.
- the block is movable in ways 8 and is normally urged toward the toe end of the bed by a spring 9.
- the rocking movement of the spindle is limited in both directions by providing stop-nuts 10 and 11 on a fixed stud 12.
- the other arm of the bell-crank lever 5 is forked to straddle the stud be tween the stop-nuts.
- a spring 13 holds the bell-cranktoward the stop-nut 10 with the spindle-4 spring actuated toward the toe end of the machine.
- a toe-stop 14 is provided to hold the last toward a pulling lever 18, hereinafter described, and to position the last and to prevent it frommoving toward the toe end of the machine.
- stop is mounted on two headed studs 15 which are slidably mounted in hubs 16 on the bed 1.
- Springs 17 surround the studs between the stop and the hubs so that the stop is held yieldingly upward.
- ⁇ Vhen a last. with an upper thereon is placed in the machine, it is put on the spindle with the toe turned toward one side of the machine.
- the toe of the last is then elevated against spring 13 and at the same time the last and the upper are pushed back so that the toe of the last can swing in front of and engage the stop 14.
- the block 7 is moved rearwardly against the force of the spring 9 which thenholds the toe of the last against the stop 14 in the positions shown in Figs. 2 and 6.
- the means whereby the upper may be pulled lengthwise of the last comprise a lever 18 pivoted at 19 on the bed.
- the workengaging end of the lever is provided with a friction material such as the rubber 20 over which the upper is turned as shown in Fig. 5 and held against the front face of the pulling lever by the operators hands during the pulling movement on the upper.
- the other end of the lever is connected by a rod 21 with a treadle 22 pivoted on the leg 3.
- the lever 18 besides being adapted to pull the'upper also acts as a support for the forepart of the last.
- the lever 18 is in the dotted position, Fig. 6.
- the operator then moves the lever 18 next Theto the tip line and turns the toe or the tip of the upper against the front face of the said lever 18.
- the operator then continues to press on the treadle, at the same time holding the upper or the tip of the upper firmly against the front face of the lever.
- I preferably have the vamp on the surface of the lever and the tip on the perpendicular front portion of the lever.
- the turning of the upper on lever 18, is preferably done when the upper is heavy or the toe of the last high, as more strain is then necessary to properly work the upper, preparatory to the pulling over operation or preparatory to the wiping operation.
- the toe ortip of the upper is turned against the front face of the lever, as above explained, in special cases, as for example when the upper is very heavy or does not fit the last properly or when the toe of the last is extra high.
- the operator pulls the upper at the sides and applies fastenings at the sides.
- the sides of the upper are preferably pulled and fastened by hand in this embodiment of the invention.
- the upper may be fastened to the last prior to the lengthwise pulling movement. I want it well understood, however, that in every case the upper is not fastened to the bottom of the last, at or near the ball part of the last, prior to the lengthwise pulling movement upon the upper, to permit the vamp and the vamp-seamto move freely down the incline of the last at the instep and at the same time lengthwise of the last toward the toe.
- This invention also provides for proper position of the work to permit the operator to insert fastenings at the bottom of the last to hold the upper in lasted condition.
- the toe of the last is thereafter lifted above the toestop 14 which will allow the spring 9 to move the last toward the toe end of the machine.
- the movement of the last is limited by a second stop 45, Figs. 1 and 2.
- This second stop is for the purpose of positioning and of holding the work in position relatively to the wipers.
- This stop is preferably positioned one-eighth of 'an inch or thereabout in advance of the toe-wipers, when the wipers are positioned preparatory to the wiping operation.
- the position of Ithe stop, in advance of the wipers, is for the purpose of causing the wipers to wipe the upper, or the tip of the upper, at the toe-end and at the sidesof the last simultaneously at the start of. the wiping operation.
- the springs 17 which elevate the stop 14 are compressed as shown in 'Fig. 7 by the 'downhold '47, or by hand, when the forepart of the last isresting on the said stop 14.
- An adjustable support is provided-to support the last at the toe at this time.
- the support comprises a pivotally mounted Work-engaging pad 25 carried on the upper end of a stud 26 which is held yieldingly upward by a spring 27.
- the stud is carried on one end of a lever 28 pivoted in a bracket 29 secured to the bed.
- the other end of the lever engages a spool 30 which is threaded to engage a 'screw 31 mounted for rotation in the bed.
- the support is moved lengthwise of the last and adjusted in proper relation to the toe Wipers.
- the screw may also be used to adjust the support toward and from the last; The parts thus far described will then be in the positions shown in Fig. 7.
- a slide 32 which carries the usual heel band 33 and the heel wipers generally indicated at 34, is moved toward and into operating position to the work.
- the heel band 33 referred to as heel engaging means in the claims, holds the upper against the last and holds the last from lengthwise movement and toward the upper pulling lever 18 and toward the last supporting spindle 4.
- the heel slide 32 is connected to the treadle by two links 35, one at each side of the machine, which are connected to two arms of a three-arm bellcrank lever 36 pivoted at 37 on the bed 1.
- the other arm carries a rod 38 which passes through a clearance hole in the treadle 27, a pair of check-nuts being provided below the treadle to impart its motion to the rod.
- treadles may be used if desired, onevto move to the pulling means independently of the heel-engaging means.
- the relative time of operation of these means is adjustable to a certain extent and the time of operation may be further varied by suitable construction of the treadle connections.
- the treadle 2% is automatically stopped from return movement in all positions by a rack 40 pivoted on the leg 2 at 41 and constructed to engage a dog 42 on the treadle.
- a lever 43 acting under the influence of a spring 44 holds the rack toward the dog and provides means for disengaging the rack from the dog when it is desired to unlock the treadle.
- the toe Wipers 46 and the hold-down 47 need not be described in detail, as they may be of any desired construction and their operation is well known-to those skilled in the art. This is also true of the heel wipers 34.
- fastenings may be applied at this machine, near the tip-seam of the upper, at the top or at the sides of the last, near the bottom of the last to hold the upper in pulled condition on the last.
- the modification of the means whereby the upper may b pulled shown in Fig. 8 is for the purpose of simultaneously engaging the vamp, the vamp seam, and the quarter, in heavy uppers. Where a comparatively strong pull is exerted on the work, the Vamp seamis then liable to work away from the instep of the last after the pulling movement, which will allow the vamp to work back toward its original position. I overcome this difficulty by constructing the lever 18 with an enlarged end 18 curved on a radius struck from the pivotal point 19. The end of the lever is covered with the usual rubber 20 for increasing the friction on the upper. As shown in the drawing, the end 18 engages the vamp V, the vampseam S, and the quarter Q.
- the treadle whereby the upper pulling I means may be actuated, permits the operator to hold the shoe positively in proper position in the machine, preparatory to and durin the actuation of the upper pulling means upon the upper and, moreover, permits the operator to actuate thereby the upper pulling means, during the time of the wiping operation upon the upper by the toe wipers.
- the upper an its seams are pulled and set on the last in a better manner than ever before, by hand or by machine, and this pulling and setting of the upper and its seams on the last is also conducive to excellent results atthe subsequent lasting operations, termed pulling over and toe wiping.

I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EUCLID I. LA CHAPELLE, OF BEVERLY, MASSACHUSETTS.
MACHINE FOR WORKING AN UPPER ON A LAST.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Jan, 11, 1916,
Application filed October 7, 1913. Serial No. 793,881.
The object of the invention is to simplify and improve a machine for working an upper on a last shown and described in an application for a United States patent Serial No. 769,533, filed by me on May 23, 1913. The broadest claims are included in the said application. Various features have been introduced in the accomplishment of this ob- .ject, as will be hereinafter described.
The invention is illustrated and described as applied to a lasting machine in which the sides of the upper are pulled by hand. The lasting tacks or other fasteners are also applied by hand.. The particular means employed to pull the sides of the upper and to apply fastenings form no part of the present invention; as various well known devices for this purpose may be employed. For example, the new features of the present invention can be applied to the machine commercially known as the Chase bed lasting machine which has grippers to engage and pull the upper at the sides of the last. In such a case the grippers at the sides would preferably be timed to operate to pull the upper after the upper had been pulled lengthwise of the last, as contemplated by this invention.
Referring to the drawings-Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved machine; Fig. 2 is a plan of the upper part of the machine shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a detail view of the toe-stop; Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are detail views illustrating the operation ofv certain parts of the machine which will be hereinafter described; and Fig. 8 is a detail view of a modification of the pulling device particularly adapted for use on heavy work.
The principal parts of this machine are carried on a bed 1 which is supported upon legs 2 and 3. A spindle 4 is provided to support the last. In order that thelast maybe.
movable longitudinally of the machine, the spindle 4 is fixed in an arm of a bell-crank lever 5 pivotally mounted at 6 on a block 7. The block is movable in ways 8 and is normally urged toward the toe end of the bed by a spring 9. The rocking movement of the spindle is limited in both directions by providing stop-nuts 10 and 11 on a fixed stud 12. The other arm of the bell-crank lever 5 is forked to straddle the stud be tween the stop-nuts. A spring 13 holds the bell-cranktoward the stop-nut 10 with the spindle-4 spring actuated toward the toe end of the machine. Although not absolutely necessary to this invention a toe-stop 14 is provided to hold the last toward a pulling lever 18, hereinafter described, and to position the last and to prevent it frommoving toward the toe end of the machine. stop is mounted on two headed studs 15 which are slidably mounted in hubs 16 on the bed 1. Springs 17 surround the studs between the stop and the hubs so that the stop is held yieldingly upward.
\Vhen a last. with an upper thereon is placed in the machine, it is put on the spindle with the toe turned toward one side of the machine. The toe of the last is then elevated against spring 13 and at the same time the last and the upper are pushed back so that the toe of the last can swing in front of and engage the stop 14. In pushing back on the last, the block 7 is moved rearwardly against the force of the spring 9 which thenholds the toe of the last against the stop 14 in the positions shown in Figs. 2 and 6.
The means whereby the upper may be pulled lengthwise of the last comprise a lever 18 pivoted at 19 on the bed. The workengaging end of the lever is provided with a friction material such as the rubber 20 over which the upper is turned as shown in Fig. 5 and held against the front face of the pulling lever by the operators hands during the pulling movement on the upper. The other end of the lever is connected by a rod 21 with a treadle 22 pivoted on the leg 3. A
spring 23 holds the treadle and the lever 18 elevated against a stop 24. The lever 18 besides being adapted to pull the'upper also acts as a support for the forepart of the last. When the last is first put in the machine, the lever 18 is in the dotted position, Fig. 6. The operator then moves the lever 18 next Theto the tip line and turns the toe or the tip of the upper against the front face of the said lever 18. The operator then continues to press on the treadle, at the same time holding the upper or the tip of the upper firmly against the front face of the lever. I preferably have the vamp on the surface of the lever and the tip on the perpendicular front portion of the lever.
The turning of the upper on lever 18, is preferably done when the upper is heavy or the toe of the last high, as more strain is then necessary to properly work the upper, preparatory to the pulling over operation or preparatory to the wiping operation.
The toe ortip of the upper is turned against the front face of the lever, as above explained, in special cases, as for example when the upper is very heavy or does not fit the last properly or when the toe of the last is extra high. a
After having pulled the upper to a proper position lengthwise of the last, the operator pulls the upper at the sides and applies fastenings at the sides. The sides of the upper are preferably pulled and fastened by hand in this embodiment of the invention. The upper may be fastened to the last prior to the lengthwise pulling movement. This invention also provides for proper position of the work to permit the operator to insert fastenings at the bottom of the last to hold the upper in lasted condition. The toe of the last is thereafter lifted above the toestop 14 which will allow the spring 9 to move the last toward the toe end of the machine. The movement of the last is limited by a second stop 45, Figs. 1 and 2. This second stop is for the purpose of positioning and of holding the work in position relatively to the wipers. This stop is preferably positioned one-eighth of 'an inch or thereabout in advance of the toe-wipers, when the wipers are positioned preparatory to the wiping operation. The position of Ithe stop, in advance of the wipers, is for the purpose of causing the wipers to wipe the upper, or the tip of the upper, at the toe-end and at the sidesof the last simultaneously at the start of. the wiping operation. The springs 17 which elevate the stop 14 are compressed as shown in 'Fig. 7 by the 'downhold '47, or by hand, when the forepart of the last isresting on the said stop 14. An adjustable support is provided-to support the last at the toe at this time. The support comprises a pivotally mounted Work-engaging pad 25 carried on the upper end of a stud 26 which is held yieldingly upward by a spring 27. The stud is carried on one end of a lever 28 pivoted in a bracket 29 secured to the bed. The other end of the lever engages a spool 30 which is threaded to engage a 'screw 31 mounted for rotation in the bed. By turning the screw, the support is moved lengthwise of the last and adjusted in proper relation to the toe Wipers. The screw may also be used to adjust the support toward and from the last; The parts thus far described will then be in the positions shown in Fig. 7. Upon further depression of the treadle, a slide 32, which carries the usual heel band 33 and the heel wipers generally indicated at 34, is moved toward and into operating position to the work. The heel band 33, referred to as heel engaging means in the claims, holds the upper against the last and holds the last from lengthwise movement and toward the upper pulling lever 18 and toward the last supporting spindle 4. The heel slide 32 is connected to the treadle by two links 35, one at each side of the machine, which are connected to two arms of a three-arm bellcrank lever 36 pivoted at 37 on the bed 1. The other arm carries a rod 38 which passes through a clearance hole in the treadle 27, a pair of check-nuts being provided below the treadle to impart its motion to the rod.
It will be observed that there is provision made for a lost motion between the treadle and the rod 38 in order that the lengthwise pulling movement may be accomplished prior to the movement of the heel slide 32.
It is apparent that two independent treadles may be used if desired, onevto move to the pulling means independently of the heel-engaging means. The relative time of operation of these means is adjustable to a certain extent and the time of operation may be further varied by suitable construction of the treadle connections.
The treadle 2% is automatically stopped from return movement in all positions by a rack 40 pivoted on the leg 2 at 41 and constructed to engage a dog 42 on the treadle. A lever 43 acting under the influence of a spring 44 holds the rack toward the dog and provides means for disengaging the rack from the dog when it is desired to unlock the treadle.
The toe Wipers 46 and the hold-down 47 need not be described in detail, as they may be of any desired construction and their operation is well known-to those skilled in the art. This is also true of the heel wipers 34.
Having described the manner in which the shoe is prepared for the Wiping operations of the toe and of the heel, it will be evident that the heel and toe may be operated upon in accordance with the nature of the work and that the shoe may be assembled to the last only or pulled over, or completely lasted before it leaves the machine, a'ccording to the nature of the work and the desire of the operator.
It is to be noted that fastenings may be applied at this machine, near the tip-seam of the upper, at the top or at the sides of the last, near the bottom of the last to hold the upper in pulled condition on the last.
The modification of the means whereby the upper may b pulled shown in Fig.
The combination of the upper pulling means and of the actuating means therefor and of the spindle to support the last, with the heel engaging means, to hold the upper toward the last, as herein described, constitutes a novel and very important feature of this invention.
The combination of the upper pulling means and of the actuating means therefor and of the toe wipers and of the spindle to support the last, with the last moving means, to move the last relatively to the toe Wipers, as herein described, constitutes another novel and very important feature of this invention.
In operating a machine, havin combinations of. elements, as recited in t is patent, it has been found that the toe end stop was not absolutely necessary and that the actuating means, for quickly actuating the upper pulling means, brought about most excellent results at all the operations of a machine substantially like the one herein described.
The treadle, whereby the upper pulling I means may be actuated, permits the operator to hold the shoe positively in proper position in the machine, preparatory to and durin the actuation of the upper pulling means upon the upper and, moreover, permits the operator to actuate thereby the upper pulling means, during the time of the wiping operation upon the upper by the toe wipers.
In the general run of a shoe factory, it has been found that, with a machine as herein described, a sole leather pad on-the pulling means in place of the rubber pad 20 turning the upper over the pulling means, or
pulling the toe end of the upper over the toe end of the last, during the time of the pulling operation upon the upper by the upper pulling means, may be advantageous, even when a machine having toe wipers, as herein described, is used.
Vhen a machine, embodying combinations of elements, as recited in this patent,
is used, new, beneficial results are brought about that were heretofore impossible with machines of this eneral character.
The upper an its seams are pulled and set on the last in a better manner than ever before, by hand or by machine, and this pulling and setting of the upper and its seams on the last is also conducive to excellent results atthe subsequent lasting operations, termed pulling over and toe wiping.
These and other novel and important features, bringing about better results than were heretofore possible with machines of this general character, are specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In building and operating machines of this general character, it has been found advantageous to build the pulling means fiveeighths of an inch thick, or thereabout, so
as to properly pull and hold the Vamp to the lines of the last in the hollow back of the toe of the last and between the tip-seam and the vamp-seam of the upper, preparatory to the application of fastenings to hold the vamp in pulled condition on the last and preparatory'to the toe Wiping operation upon the upper, when toe-wipers are provided in machines of this character. lVhen the pulling means are so built, new, beneficial results are brought about at both,
the pulling and wiping operations, on all shapes and styles of lasts and such construction is novel and very important.
I want it well understood that the term, heel engaging means, as employed in the specification and in the claims, refers to the heel band 33 and islimited to, means Whereby the upper may bev held toward the last,
at the location of the heel band relatively to the last, as shown in the appended drawings. In the broadest aspect of this feature,
I claim any suitable means fo'r holding the upper toward the last, at the location of said heel band relatively to the last, as shown in the appended drawings, and the term heel engaging means is employed in the claims ,to broadly cover that feature, which is novel and very important.
