Our invention relates to sheet-metal door construction and particularly to the construction of fireproof doors having rail and stile or frame members comprising parallel metallic plates, panels of glass, metal, or other substance and molding members also usually being used.
The invention coveredby our present application is 'a division of our application Serial No. 2120, filed January 14, 1915, for panel door construction.
The invention covered herein particularly comprises means and-a method for securing together the frame members of the door at the corners by the use of connecting members interposed between the outer sheets of the door atthe corners and extending over the joints between the adjacent ends of the frame members, these connecting devices be-' ing so arranged as to enable the various parts to be welded together effectivelyand with a minimum amount at heat; the result beingto form a rigid connection between the connected sheets at the scam, in such manner that little or no shrinkage is experienced when the sheets of the door are subsequently welded at their abutting edges, the tendency of the frame members to warp or become distorted because of the welding together of the same being largely overcom by this construction.
In order that a clearer understanding of our invention may be 'had, attention is hereby directed to the accompanying drawings forming part of this application illustrating the application of the method referred to and one embodiment of our improved con-- struction.
In the drawings Figure 1 represents a partial front elevation of a corner of a sheet-metal door, certain parts being shown in section to illustrate our improved corner-box construction, and Fig. 2 is a section on line 22 of Fig. 1, the upper plates 1915. Seria1No.25,097.

Referring to the drawings, I have illustrated a door comprising stiles and rails,
together with one or more panels. In Fig.
. 1 a corner of the door .is illustrated showin." the vertical stile 1 and the top rail 2, the stiles and rails at each corner of the door being mitered at their ends to form abutting inclined edges 3 which are joined bv the. corner-box construction which will be more fully described hereinafter. The various frame members, as for example the stile 1, comprise parallel metallic sheets 4 and 5, which in the construction illustrated, form side Lmembers of the stile or other frame member, asbestos or other fireproof material 6 being interposed between the plates. The outside sheets of the top rail are'shown in Fig. 2 at 4 and 5. A panel 7 is illustrated as being mounted in molding members 8, the flanges of which are welded or otherwise secured to the flanges 9 of the side sheets of the stiles and rails, as is more fully described in the application above referred to.
The corner-box constructiomwhich I use in joining together the adjacent ends of the top and bottom rails and stiles, comprises a pair of channelzbars 10 and 11. As stated, the outside sheets 4 and 5 and 4' and 5 of the stile 1 and the top rail 2 abut against each other at mitered or inclined edges 3. At each such joint, a channel-bar 10 is in serted between the sheets transverse to the same and a second channel-bar 11 is inserted within the flanges of bar 10 and in a reverse direction to bar 10, so as to form a box-section with the same. The outside channel 10 is provided with raised welding spots 12 on the outer sides of its flanges, which spots contact the inner surfaces of plates 5, 5 and 4, 4. After the box constructions have been welded into place at the joints between the stiles and rails, the seams 3 may be closed up by the usual method of gas or arc-welding. By theprovision of the rigid construction described under the parts which are welded, and by having the reinforcing members rigidly connected to the outside plates on each side of the seams, the shrinkage which usually results from the arc-Welding of the seams is not obtained and conse quently the door remains nearly flat after In the assembling together, as described, after which the panels may be mounted in position by means of the molding members which are then mounted in place and welded, resulting in a. strong and uniform construction.
It will be understood that our invention comprises the combination of structural elements in a door described, and also the method of assembling the same to join together the adjacent edges of the frame members of the door, which consists in positioning a channel-bar having raised welding spots thereon, within the side sheets of the abutting frame members and transverse to the same, positioning a metallic reinforcing or compression member between the flanges of the channel-bar referred to, welding the parts together -and thereafter welding .together the seams or joints between the abutting edges of the side sheets of the frame members. 7
Having now particularly described our invention, what we claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is as follows:
In a door, or similar construction, the combination of a pair of frame members, one transverse and the other longitudinal, having parallel metallic inner and outer sheets, having abutting inclined ends welded together to form a corner of the structure, a
channel bar within said sheets, extending I transverse to the welded joints of the same and' welded to sheets on both sides of the joints and a channel bar Within said first channel bar, in reversed position thereto, to form a box section with said first bar, substantially as set forth.
