Application filed December 10, 1914. Serial No. 876,543.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES M. THOMP- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Philadelphia, in the county of Tuscarawas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Channeling-Tools; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to hand tools of the type used for grooving and channeling leather, more particularly the soles of boots and shoes;
The object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed, durable and efficient device of this character for cutting a thin channel around the edges of the lower sides of shoe soles, the parts of which are adjustable to regulate the depth of the out and the distance from the edge within a horizontal limit.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and. arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 represents a perspective view of this improved channeling tool; Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof showing it applied; Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section taken on the line 3-8 of Fig. 2; Fig. t is a bottom plan view thereof.
In the embodiment illustrated a head 1 is shown having a shank 2- extending at an oblique angle therefrom preferably from one of its upper corners, said head and shank being made of any suitable metal preferably aluminum. This head 1 has an opening 3 extending transversely therethrough to form a knife receiving seat and this opening is herein shown rectangular in configuration. A set screw 4 extends through the head into the opening 3 and is designed to adjustably mount a knife blade 5 in said opening said blade being herein shown pointed and beveled on one face to facilitate the cutting of the channel in the shoe sole and it may be projected or retracted more or less if desired to vary the depth of the channel to be out. A shoulder 6 extendslaterally from one side of the head 1 at the front of the opening 3 therein and has its lower face beveled or inclined upwardly and forwardly to form a guide for the shoe sole which is cut during the channeling operation to form a lip L designed to be secured over the stitches after the sole has been fastened to the shoe. As shown in Fig. 2 the shoe sole passes under the lower end of the shoulder 6 and the leather lip L cut by the blade 5 passes over the upper beveled face of the knife during the cutting operation. An apertured lug 7 depends from the head 1 at the side opposite that carrying the shoulder and has a set screw 8 adjustably mounted therein for regulating a gage 9 disposed between said lug and the shouldered side of the head and which is designed to regulate the width of the cut to be made, whereby a deeper or shallower cut may be formed as desired. This gage 9 as shown is disposed edgewise and is curved longitudinally throughout its length with its concaved face disposed outwardly and which is adapted to engage the edge of the leather being channeled and thereby limit the inward movement of the knife point. This gage 9 is carried by a spring arm 10 herein shown in the form of a resilient strip of metal secured at one end to the head 1 and bowed outwardly intermediately of its ends, the gage 9 being formed integral therewith and extending in a plane substantially at right angles to the bowed portion 11 thereof, said bowed. portion affording a spring action for the gage, the resiliency thereof causing this gage to normally spring backward toward the apertured lug 7 and against the rear face of which the set screw 8 is designed to engage for forcing the gage forward against the tension of the spring thereof.
In the use of this device the knife blade 5 is first adiusted in the seat 8 to project the cutting edge and point thereof the desired extent for forming a channel of the required depth and the set screw l is then screwed home to hold said blade in this position. When the blade has been so positioned and the gage 9 has been set to limit the inward movement or cutting extent of the blade 5 the tool is ready for use and is applied by engaging the knife with the leather to be cut with the beveled face of the guard leather 6 positioned on top of the shoulder so that the lip cut by the knife will be guided between said guard and the knife blade as is shown clearly in Fig. 2.
From the above description the operation of the device will be thoroughly understood and it will be seen that an inexperienced operator may use this tool to properly channel the leather for forming the shoe, the object of which is to cut a thin channel around the edges of the lower sides of the soles preparatory to the sewing of the sole on the shoe.
I claim as my invention: I
1. A leather channeling tool comprising a head having an opening extending transversely therethrough to form a knife seat, a knife mounted upon said seat, a screw mounted in said head and intersecting said opening and adapted to clamp said knife in adjusted position, a gage mounted on said head and arranged below said knife, a lug depending from said head atone side thereof, and a screw adjustably mounted in said lug in position to engage and vary the posi 'tion of said gage. A leather channeling tool comprising a head having an opening extending transversely therethrough to form a knife seat, a knife mounted in said head and intersecting said opening and adapted to clamp said knife in adjusted position, a gage disposed below said Copies of this patent maybe obtained for five cents each,
mounted upon said seat, a screw' knife, said gage being curved longitudinally and having its concaved face disposed outwardly, a spring arm integrally secured to one end of said gage and extending in a plane at right angles thereto, said arm being secured at its free end to one side of said head and having its intermediate portion bowed outwardly, said gage transversely of the head.
A leather channeling tool comprising a head having an opening extending transversely therethrough to form a knife seat, a knife mounted upon said seat, a screw mounted in said head and intersecting said opening and adapted to clamp said knife in adjusted position, and a guide lug extending laterally from one side of said head in advance of the knife opening therein, said lug having an upwardly curved lower face.
