Be it known that I, JOSEPH D. CoUeHniN, a citizen of the United States of America,
and a resident of Dorchester, in the county I of Suffolk and State of -Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toggles, of which the following 1s a specification. L
This invention relates to devices for stretching leather to which has been applied a coating of patent leather preparation, and which it is desired to thoroughly dry while the leather is stretched on suitable frames. These devices are commonly known as single toggles.
The invention has for its object the production of a toggle which will have great strength and the cross member of which will securely hold the cord or other flexible member forming a part of the toggle.
Another object of the invention is to make the cross member in such a manner that the cord may be quickly positioned therein during the construction of the toggle.
The invention further consists in certain novel features of construction and arrange-v ment of parts which will be fully understood by reference to the description of the drawings and to the claims hereinafter given.
Of the drawings: Figure 1 represents an elevation of a toggle embodying the principles of the present invention. Fig. 2 represents an end elevation of the same, drawn to an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 represents a transverse. section of the same, the cutting plane being on line 3--3 on Fig. 1.- Fig. l represents a plan of the blank from" which the cross member is formed. Fig. 5 represents a plan of the same after bending, and Fig. 6 represents a section of the blank after the formation of the cylindrical flange, said figure being drawn to an enlarged scale.
Similar characters designate like parts throughout the several figures of the drawinO.
ilin the drawings, 10 is a blank from which the cross member 11 is adapted to be constructed. This blank is provided with a slot 12 and a small centrally disposed opening 13 therethrough. When the opposite sides of the blank 10 are bent upwardly into the position indicated in Fig. 5 of the Specification of Letters Patent.

connecting member 1l, while the remaining `portions thereof will be separated as indicated at 15 in Fig. 5 of the drawings. Before the blank is bent into the position shown in Fig. 5, a punching member of any well-known form is preferably inserted in the opening 13 to enlarge this opening slightly and form. a flange 1G extending downwardly from the face of the blank as indicated in Fig. 6 of the drawing, the upper wall of the opening 13 being rounded over as at 17 to prevent injury to the cord 18 inserted therein. This cord or flexible member 18 is adapted to be positioned between the sides 19 of the cross member 11 and to rest on the portion 14 connecting said side member.
The ready insertion of the cord between the side members 19 is facilitated by the separation of the opposite ends of said side members. When the cord 18 is inserted the side members are then subjected to pressure to jam them upon said cord, and this will then be securely gripped so that it is impossible to remove the same even under the great strain to which the cord is sub jected when applied to hides during the tanning or ,[inishing operation. The fact that the sides are liattened gives additional strength to the cross member and prevents the bending thereof under strain.
Having thus described my invention. l claim:
1. A device of the class described, consist-` ing of a U-shaped member having a slot extending from one end to a point adjacent the center thereof, and a `flexible member clamped in the closed end and extending therefrom through said slot.
9.. A device of the class described, consisting of a U-shaped member having a slot centrally disposed therein and extending from one end to a point adjacent the center thereof; and a flexible member clamped in the closed end and extending therefrom through said slot.
3. A device of the class described, consisting of a U-shaped member having a slot extending from one end to a point adjacent the center thereof, said member having an outwardly extending flange at the inner end of said slot, and a flexible member clamped in the closed end and extending therefrom through said slot. g 4. A device of the class described, consisting of a member having two flat sides conneoted together on one side of a central point and separated on the other side there-` of, and a flexible member extending from said central point with its end clamped be-` tween the connected flat sides.
5. A device of the class described, consisting of a member having two flat sides connected together on one side of a central point and separated on the other side thereof, said member being provided at said central point with a cylindrical flange extending outwardly therefrom; and a' flexible member eXL tending from said central point with its end clamped between the connected flat sides.
Signed by me at 4L Post Ofice Sq., Boston, Mass., this 11th day of March, 1915.
