The present invention appertain's to hinges, andaims to provide a noveland improved hinge for hinging or pivoting a mirror frame of a chiflionier, dresser, or other article of furniture, to the standards or uprights thereof, for pivoting a transom. .sash within its frame, and for pivotally iounting other frames or objects.

It is the object of the invention to provide a hinge of unique construction and operation, whereby the pivotally supported member may be held in a substantial manner at various angularpositions, and so that the said member may be swung readily by hand, but not liable to swing accidentally.

It is also within the scope of the invention to improve the hinge generally inits details, to enhance the utility and efficiency thereof, and render the samev comparatively simple and inexpensive in construction, as well as practical and efficient in use.

lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanving drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the hinge. Fig. 2 is an enlarged section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 3. Fig. 8 is a reduced section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.

The hinge embodies a pair of leaves or plates 1 and 2, which are preferably of elongated or rectangular contour, and which are apertured for the insertion of screws or other securing elementsB to secure the leaves to the respective parts which are to be hinged or pivoted together. As illustrated,

the leaf2 is secured to a standard or upright 5, while the leaf 1 is secured to the. frame tof a mirror,butit is to be understood that the hinge may be employed in various capacities for hingedly connecting two parts.

The adjacent edges of the leaves 1 and 2 are provided with the outstanding wings or lobes 6 and 7 respectively, which are arranged at right angles with the leaves and which are parallel. The wings 6 and 7 are approximately semi-circular in contour. The remote edges of the leaves are provided with outstanding flanges 8 and 9, respectively, which are arranged at right angles with the leaves parallel with the wings. A hinge or pivot pin 10 isengaged through the wings and flanges and having terminal heads 11 hearing against the outer sides of the flanges for holding the parts of the hinge assembled. The wings and flanges are preferably resilient or flexible to a slight degree, in order that they may yield when necessary, but said parts are sufficiently firm to avoid the weakening or distortion of the hinge in use.

A semi-circular plate 12 is secured to the outer side of the wing 6 and coincides with said wing to practically constitute a portion thereof, and the plate 12 is provided with a tongue "13 projecting from its curved edge intermediate the ends of said edge. This tongue 13 is flexible or resilient, and is bent around the curved edges of the wings 6 and 7, so that the free portion of the tongue 13 bears against the curved edge of the wing 7 Thus, the tongue or spring 13 holds the wings together, and allows said wings to separate slightly when necessary. A rivet 1 1 which is employed for securing the wing 6 and plate 12 together adjacent the tongue 13, is provided with a rounded head or lug 15 cooperable with an arcuate series of depressions or sockets 16 provided in the inner side of the wing 7 adjacent the curved edge thereof.

In use, the wings 6 and 7 being forced toward one another by the influence of the tongue or spring 13 causes the head 15 to engage in one of the depressions 16, for holding the parts 1 and 5 at the position to which they are set. The said parts may therefore be held at various angular positions relative to one another, which is desirable for supporting the mirror of a chiffonier, dresser, or the like, or for supporting a transom, although it will be understood that the hinge may be employed for various suitable purposes. The frame or part 1 may be readily swung by hand since the wings 6 and 7 may swing relative to one another, the head 15 snapping into and out of the depressions 16. The Wings 6 and 7 may yield orseparate When the head 15 passes from one depression to another. The tongue 13 acts both as a guide for holding the curved free edges of the Wings together, and" as a spring for yieldably holding the wings together. The flexible flanges 8 and 9 may also yield, if necessary, to allow the Wings-6 and 7 to separate.

The leaves 1 and 2 and plate 12 are preferably constructed of sheet metal having sufficient resiliency and rigidity for the purposes, and the hinge may be readily and cheaply manufactured. 7
