Be it known that I, Amman 'BREEHL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Louisville, county of Jefferson, and State of Kentucky, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Trunks, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvement in trunks, or analogous receptacles, in which the front wall of the body of the trunk is of less height than the rear wall, the end walls sloping from the rear forward and in which the lid fits upon, or overlaps, the upper margin of the body.

An object is to provide an overlid trunk, or case, having characteristics mentioned above which shall be simple, strong, and rigid in construction.

A further object is the provision of a trunk, the lid of which may be raised, to a vertical position, when the back of the trunk is against the wall, which is usually the case, without the necessity of moving it from the wall, and in which the lid will remain in an. open position without the use 'of braces.

lVith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel arrangement and construction of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification, wherein is set forth an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that such changes and modifications may be resorted to as come within the scope of the appended claims.

Referring to the drawing wherein similar reference characters designate like parts in the several views; Figure 1, is an end elevation of an embodiment of my invention, with the lid closed, one corner being broken away to show the construction; Fig. 2, a

view similar to Fig. 1, with the lid raised; Fig. 3, a side elevation of the hinge employed; Fig. 4, a top plan of the hinge; Figs. 5, and 6, plan and end elevations, respectively showing how the leaves of the hinges are assembled.

Referring now more particularly to the drawing, the numeral -1 designates the body of the trunk and 2 the lid therefor. A hinge strip 3 secured to the rear side wall 4 extends forward and upward therefrom at a suitable angle, preferably about 35 degrees from the horizontal. From the forward edge of this hinge strip the upper edge of the ends of the body slope forward and downward at a slight angle from Specification of Letters Patent.

A hinge strip 5- secured on the rear of the lid 2, projects downward and rearward from the top panel 6 to a meeting point with the hinge strip 3, the two strips lying in the same, or parallel, planes. The upper surface of the lid lies in a horizontal plane the lower edge of the ends complementing the ends of the body, the inclination of the juncture of the ends of the body and the lid being just sufficient to provide a vertical lock strip on the front of the lid, the arrangement being such that the mass of the lid lies above a horizontal line drawn through the meeting points of the hinge strips so that when the lid is raised the center of gravity will fall in the rear of the hinge point and the lid will not require any support to hold it open nor will it pass the vertical plane of the rear wall of the body. Consequently it will not be necessary to move the trunk from against the wall, where it may be standing, in order to open it. The lid is connected to the body of the trunk by a plurality of hinges such as 7 which are suitably secured to the hinge strips. The hinges each comprise two leaves 8 and 9 each of which is bent at a suitable point in its length to conform respectively to the top and back of the trunk and to the strips 3 and 5. The leaf 8 comprises a body portion 10- and a depend ing portion 11. On the body portion is an elevation or abutment 12 the forward face 13 of which slants backward at an angle of approximately 1.0 degrees from a line vertical to the plane of said body portion. A plurality of members 14 extend forward from the face 13, curving clownward and rearward to within a spaced distance of the body 10, leaving a space 24- therebetween. The leaf 9 comprises a body portion 15 and an extended portion 16-. The body portion is provided with a plurality of openings 17 adapted to receive the members 14, the portion 18 lying within said member and serving as the pintle on which the hinge turns. The thickness of the body 15 is greater than the width of the space 24, consequently in order to introduce the member 14 into the spaces 17 a groove -19 is provided, in the face of the body, leading to said spaces whereby, by holding the leaf 9 at an angle to leaf 8 as shown in Fig. 6, it may be slid along (see Fig. 5) until the hooks 14 enter the spaces 17, when the leaf may be raised to its operative position, in which position the leaves are inseparable. It will be observed that with the hinge in its operative position (see Fig. 3) when the leaf 9 is raised so that the plane of the portion 16 is vertical the portion 15 rests against the abutment 12 which holds in that position; in this position the center of gravity of the trunk lid falls in the rear of the pintles of the hinges and consequently the lid will not fall for ward.

Having thus described my invention so that anyone skilled in the art pertaining thereto, may make and use the same I claim:

1. In a trunk, a body, a lid therefor, a hinge strip arranged along the upper edge of the rear wall of said body and extended forward and upward at an obtuse angle to said wall, a complementary strip depending from said lid and lying in the same plane as, and abutting against said first named strip, the juncture of the ends of the lid and body lying in a plane extended forward from the juncture of said strips and at an acute angle from a horizontal line drawn through the juncture of said strip, whereby the mass of the lid lies above such horizontal line.

2. In a trunk, a body, a lid therefor, a hinge strip arranged along the upper edge of one wall of the body and extended at an obtuse angle therefrom,a complementary strip depending from said lid lying in a plane parallel with and abutting against said first named strip, a plurality of hinges mounted on said strips and joining said body and lid, each of said hinges comprising a pair of leaves, an abutment extended vertically from one of said leaves, a plurality of recurved members extended from the face of said abutment, the other of said leaves having a plurality of slots spaced from the butt end thereof and adapted to receive said recurved members.

3. In a trunk, a body, a lid therefor, a hinge strip arranged along the upper edge of one wall of said body and extended upward at an obtuse angle therefrom, a complementary. strip depending from said lid lying in a plane parallel with and abutting against said first named strip, a plurality of hinges mounted on said strips and joining said body and lid, each of said hinges comprising a pair of leaves, a block erected on one of said leaves at the butt end thereof, a plurality of recurved members extended from the center of the face of said block and terminating a spaced distance from and in the plane of said leaf, the other of said leaves having a plurality of slots adapted to receive said members, the thickness of said leaf being greater than the width of said Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
