1 all whom it may concern: I Be it-known that I, HERMAN RICHARD BoEsH, a citizen of the United States, re-
' siding at New York city, in thecounty of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cleaning Attachments for Fire Tubular Boilers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to fire tubular boilers, and has for its object to provide means for cleaning out the back connections of said boilers in a manner comparatively inexpensive to provide, and one which will enable the boilers to be cleaned more eli iciently than has been heretofore proposed.
With these and other objects in View the invention consists in the novel details of construction and combinations of parts more fully hereinafter disclosed and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which like numerals designate like parts in all the viewsFigure 1 is a diagrammatic longitudinal sectional view of a boiler provided with my. improvement; Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the parts shown in Fig.1;
and Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic elevational View of the boiler shown in Fig. 1 illustrating my improvement.
1 indicates any suitable shell for a fire tubular boiler, 2 the water space of the same, 3 the tubes leading from the back connection 4 to the stack 5, 6 the grates and 7 the ash pit. Any suitable bridge wall 8 may be provided, and any suitable closure 9 for the furnace and any suitable closure .10 for the ash pit may also be provided.
It is well known that in the operation of fire tubular or Scotch boilers, the tubes 3 often get clogged up with solid material of the nature of a slag, or cinders, and at present there is no means in use known to me whereby these tubes can be effectually cleaned except by drawing the fire, letting the boiler cool down, and sending a man in through the furnace portion of the boiler to chisel out and to dislodge with a pick the said solid material. This procedure invariably results in vexatious and costly delays and also to injuries to the back plate connections and to the joints between said plate Specificationof Letters Patent.

and tubes. These injuries are of course aggravated owing to the great disadvantages under which the man of necessity must work. I avoid these objections, in the present invention, by providing a man hole 11 at the side of the boiler opposite the back connection a, and by effectually closing the said man hole with a cover such as12 detachably secured by any suitable fastenings as'illustrated. The said man hole cover 12 of course is provided with suitable packings such as the asbestos ring 13' and is otherwise made gas tight. The man hole 13 is preferably of such dimensions as will readily accommodate the entrance of a man and W111 also afford him suflicient space to conveniently work at the rear ends 15 of the tubes ferred that the hole 11 at its lower circumference be substantially flush with the bottom 16 of the back connection 4 in order that the ashes and other material may be readily scraped out. In other words by locating the passage 11 so that it is substantially flush with the bottom of the ash pit a man can readily enter the back connection with a shovel or rake and can readily clean out the material which is not caught in the tubes, while he is still on the outside of the boiler. When the back connection is thus thoroughly cleaned out it is then a comparatively easy matter to enter the said back connection with the additional space afforded by the passage 11 and to thereupon clean the tubes as has been heretofore done without working at the great disadvantage that is now encountered and also without incurring the great risks of injuring the connections between the tubes and their plates.
A very decided advantageof this invention resides in the fact that a boiler of this character can be readily cleaned at sea, and thereby avoid the necessity of bringing the ship into port. A further advantage resides in the fact that the tubes may thus be cleaned as often as desired, and thereby greatly enhance the efficiency of the boiler with a corresponding saving in fuel. At present it is customary to run a brush through the tubes about every two weeks in order to clean out the soot and other material which collects'therein, but in the use of such brushes the soot and other material 5 falls in the back connection 4 and occupies the space in the bridge wall 8 whereupon it again soon finds itsway into the lowermost tubes, thus clogging them up again.
vOf course it is obvious that this invention is adapted for boilers having a plurality of furnaces, as well as to boilers'having only afsingle furnace. It is further obvious that this invention is applicable to all fire tubution of-a plurality oftubes; a furnace;-a
bridgewall; a cylindrical backconnection between said tube and bridge Wall; walls constituting a passage leading to the outside of the boiler extending at'right angles to the axis of the boiler, and flush with the top and bottom of said back connection; and
a closure for said passage, substantially as 25 described.
