JOSIAH SMITH, F FREMONT, OHIO.
STAPLE-DRAWING TOOL.
Application filed December 19, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSIAH SMITH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Fremont, in the county of Sandusky and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Staple- Drawing Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a staple drawing tool.
The object of the invention is to Provide an improved device of this character constructed in such manner that staples such as are ordinarily used for securing fence wire in position, may be readily and quickly withdrawn.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a tool of this character constructed in such manner as to retain the staple so withdrawn to prevent it from falling upon the ground.
A further object of the invention is to provide a tool of the nature set forth comprising a prying element having a short movement but of great leverage, to start the staple and a drawing element having a less leverage but greater movement. to complete the withdrawing of the staple, said drawing element being of hook-like formation to thereby engage the staple and hold the same until it is removed by the operator.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the detailed description which now follows.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a detail perspective view of a staple drawing tool constructed in accordance with the invention, and Fig. 2 is aside elevation of a tool of the plier type having the several features of the invention applied to one of the members thereof.
In the form of the device shown in Fig. 2, 5 designates a handle or shank having a curved and pointed terminal horn 6. Upon the convex face of the horn and at about the point where the curvature of the horn merges into the line of the shank, a chisel:

like point 7 is provided which forms a fulcrum for the lever constituted by the shank and horn during the time that the device is used to start the staple, it being understood that the horn is inserted beneath the staple and that the chisel point 7 is placed against the post or other surface into which the staple is driven. After the staple has been started, a hook 8 which is mounted upon that face of the shank which carries the chisel point 7, is engaged with the staple and still using the point 7 as a fulcrum, an outward pull is given handle 5 and the staple completely removed.- It will be noted that the hook is of such formation as to re tain the staple and prevent it from falling to the ground. It will also be noted that this hook has a wedge face 9 which lies at an angle to the face of the shank 5 by which the hook is carried, so that if the staple has not been dislodged far enough by horn 6, to permit it to be readily engaged by the hook, this wedge face, when an endwise pull is given shank 5, will act to further withdraw the staple sufiicient to permit its engagement the recess 10 of the hook.
The form of the device shown in Fig. 1 is substantially the same as that shown in Fig. 2 except that while the horn 6 and fulcrum point 7 are located in the same relation to each other, the hook 8- corresponding in shape to hook 8,is located upon the opposite side of the device from the point 7 but the operation of the structure is substantially the same, that is, the horn 6 is used to start the staple with the point 7" as a fulcrum after which the hook 8 is used to complete the withdrawal of the staple, though in this latter case, it is obvious that the point 7* is not used as the fulcrum.
' From the foregoing description, it will be seen that simple and efiicient means are herein provided for accomplishing the objects of the invention, but while the elements shown and described are well adapted to serve the purposes for which they are intended, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth, but includes Within its purview such changes as may be made Within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention, What I claim is:
A staple pulling tool, comprising a shank and a curved hook projecting laterally from said shank, said hook having a sharp Wedge face which extends in a straight llne longi- 10 tudinally of the shank and in parallelism with the axis of said shank from the point of the hook to the inside of said hook, and which lies at an obtuse angle to the adjacent face of said shank.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature 15 Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patent: Washington, D. C.
