To all whom/it may concern:
. Be it known that 1, CHARLES H. ALBERT, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gang-Punches, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in gang punches which are particularly adapted for perforating long strips. of material with a plurality of apertures.
In the manufacture of trunks of the higher grade the corner edges and other portions of the trunks are reinforced with strips'of fiber or other material. The strips are provided with lines of closely. positioned perforations along their side edges to properly space and accommodate tacks used in fastening the strips to the trunks. V
It is one of the objects of this invention to provide a gang punch with a plurality of punches and dies of which any number may be used to perforate the fiber or other material, as desired, without removing the inactive punches from themachine,
A further object of. the invention is to provide a gang punch having a plurality of punches with a series of bacl; members which are adapted to engage the punches desired to be utilized at the particular time.
A. further object of the invention is. to provide a gang punch of a given size which is adapted to perforate stripsof material of any length desired. v
A further object of the invention is to provide a gang punch of thecharacter described with a guard so. arranged and positioned that it is impossible for the fingers of the operator to get beneath the movable head ofthe machine.
A further object of the invention is to provide a gang punch of the character described with means for removablv holding the dies in their holder 'to prevent elongationof the holder which ordinarily'ta'kes place when a number. of dies are driven fitted to their holder.
A furtherobject of the invention is to provide a gang punch of the characterdescribed with a plurality of'loosel'y held punches, any number of which may be easily engaged to perforate material without removing the in; active punches from the machine.

.With the above and other objects in View, the invention consists of the improved gang punch and its parts and combinations, as set forth in the clafins, and all equivalents thereof.
In the accompanying drawings in which the same reference characters indicate the same parts inall of the views: Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view'of the improved gang punch taken'on line 1-l of Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view thereof taken on line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional detail view on a larger scale of a portion of the punch taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 4:; Fig. 4: is a transverse sectional view taken on line 4-4- of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a side view, on a still larger scale, of one of the punches; Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view of one of the dies; Fig. 7 is a top view of one of the back members; and Fig. 8 is a top View of another back member.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 10 indicates the legs and ends of the main frame of the improvedgang punch and 11 the table or bed thereof, connecting the ends together, and which is provided in its upper portion with a longitudinally extending dieplate slot or groove 12 to accommodate a die plate 13 positioned therein and fastened to the bed by bolts 14. The legs of the frame are connected together and braced by stay rods 10. The. end portions of the main frame are provided with outwardly projecting bearings 15 having vertically extending openings therein through which reciprocate connecting rods 16. Two ofv these connecting rods are. positioned at each end of the machine and their upper end portions are reduced in diameter and these reduced portions extend through openings provided in the movable head 17 and have nuts threaded thereon to firmly connect the parts together.
The shoulders 18, formed by the reduced portions of the rods, bear against the lower parts of the movable head. The rods positioned at each end of the machine are spaced a considerable. distance apart and at their lower end portions extend on opposite sides of the eccentric end portions 19 of. a shaft 20 journaled in the end portions of the main The lower end portions of the rods are. also reduced in. diameter and extend through connecting blocks 21 and are provided with, nuts on, their ends for firmly 7 securing the blocks to the rods. These blocks are provided with rectangular openings 22, in which play reciprocal journal blocks 23. The eccentric end portions 19 of the shaft 20 extend into and have their bearings in these blocks and serve to recipl'ocate the blocks and connected parts verofa clutch mechanism 25 of ordinary construction. The clutch is operated by means of thefoot treadle 26 in the ordinary manner. The die plate 13, positioned within-the die plate groove 12, is provided with a line ofshouldered openings 27 into which the annular, dies 28 are inserted and rest upon the shoulders 29 of said openings. The upperportions of the dies are reduced in diameter to form annular shoulders 30 which are approximately flush with the upper surface of the die holder when the said dies are inserted therein.
A. locking plate 31, fastened to the top of the die plate by screws 32 (only one being shown), is provided with a line of openings 33 through which. the reduced portions of thedies extend with the plate engaging the shoulders of the dies to firmly lock the dies in the holder.
The bed plate 11 of the punch is provided with a line of slots 34 which register with the openings of the die holder to permit the punch or waste parts to be discharged from theopenings 35 of the dies.
An angular guard 36 is also fastened to the die holder 13 and is spaced a suiiicient distance above the holder to permit the insertion of the material to be punched therebetween by a spacing bar 37. The upstanding flange 38 of the angular guard is positioned just in front of the path of travel of a punch holder 39 carried by the head 17, and the upper edgeof the flange is on a plane slightly above the plane of the lower surface of the punch holder when the punch.

The horizontal portion of the angular guard also serves as a stripper plate for the punches 40 and is provided with openings 41 which register with the openings of the dies and through which the punches 40 ,pass in entering the dies.
The movable head 17 of the punch is formed with a recessed portion 42 forming a shoulder 43. The punch holder 39 is positioned within this recess and is fastened to the movable head by a number of bolts 44 which extend through the head and are tapped into the punch holder. The upper surface of the punch holder is spaced from the shoulder 43 of the head to accommodate one, of a plurality of abutting plates 44 which are adapted to hold the punches desired to beusedin active position. V
"The punch holders are provided 'witl shouldered openings 45 which register with the dies 28, and the shouldered punches 4O are formed to snugly fit into these openings, 7
and the upper ends of the punches are'flush with the upper surface of the punch holder. Thelower portions of the punch shanks are reduced in diameter to form shoulders. 46 which areadapted to rest ron' the shoulders of the shouldered openings of the punch holder to prevent the withdrawal of the said punches downwardly from the holder.
- The abutting plates 44 have depending end flanges 47 which extend over the ends of thefpunch holder to prevent endwise .movement of the abutting plates, and depending blocks 48, bolted to thermovable head, are
adapted to firmly clamp the particular abut V ting plate in use to the movable head.
7 The abutting plate shown in 'Figs. 3 and 7 is provided with a number of transverse rearwardly extending slots 49 which register with alternate punches to permit said registering punches to be pushed upwardly when engaging the work and thus render said alternate punches inactive with reference to punching holes through the. strip of material placed beneath the angular guard. The alternate punches not in register with the slots will abut against the solid portions of the plate and the punches will be forced through the material by the movement of the DUIlCll head. The abutting plate shown in Fig. 8 is adapted to engage all of the punches and render each one active in punching material.
It is thus obvious that by providing abutting plates with slots or'openings positioned at different distances apart that any combination of active punches may be obtained by merely substituting one platefor another.
The connecting rods at each end of the gang punch are spaced a sufficient distance apart to permit strips of material of alength 1. A gang punch, comprising a die holder provided with a plurahty of dies, a punch holder provided with a plurality of shouldered openings extending therethrough, shouldered punches positioned within the openings and movable endwise therein and adapted to cooperate with the dies, and an abutting plate extending over the ends of the punches and provided with cutaway por tions registering with some of the punches to peanit said registering punches to move endwise in the punch holder when engaged by the material to be punched.
2. A gang punch, comprising a die holder provided with a plurality of shouldered die openings, shouldered dies extending into the openings, a perforated late fastenedto the die holder and through Whichthe dies extend and with their shoulders bearing against the plate, a punch holder provided with a plurality of shouldered openings extending therethrough, shouldered punches positioned within the punch holder openings and movable endwise therein and adapted to cooperate with the dies, and an'abutting plate extending over the ends of the punches and provided with cutaway portions registering with some of the punches to permit said registering punches to move endwise in the punch holder when engaged by the material being punched.
A gang punch, comprising a die holder provided with a plurality of shouldered die openings, shouldered dies extending into the openings, a perforated plate fastenedto the die holder and through which the dies extend and with their shoulders bearing against the plate, a punch holder provided with a plurality of shouldered openings extending therethrough, an angled guard member positioned between the two holders and spaced above and fastened to the die holder and having a portion extending in front of and above the lower surface of the punch holder, shouldered punches posi- 'tioned within the punch holder openings and movable endwise therein and adapted to cooperate with the dies, and an abutting plate extending over the ends of the punches and provided with cutawa portions registering with some of the punches to permit said registering punches to move endwise in the punch holder when engaged by the material being punched. 4. A gang punch, comprising a frame provided with a bed portion adapted to hold a line of dies, a movable head positioned above the bed portion and provided with means for holding a line of punches registering With the dies, reciprocating blocks positioned at opposite ends of the frame, and spaced reciprocating means connecting the movable head to the blocks, said means being out of alinement with the lines of punches and dies to permit the endwise feed of material between the punches and dies.
5. A gang punch, comprising a frame provided with a bed portion adapted to hold a line of dies, a movable head positioned above the bed portion and provided with means for holding a line of punches registering with the dies, reciprocating blocks positioned at opposite ends of the frame, and a pair of spaced reciprocating rods positioned at each end of the frame and connecting the movable head to the blocks, said rods being spaced in a plane on opposite sides of the lines of punches and dies to permit endwise feed of material therebetween and between the punches and dies.
