Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. t', 1915..
Application led'September 25, 1913. Serial No. 791,782.
T o all whom it may concern.'- v
Be it known that I, MABEL H. SLATER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Webster, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pincushions, of which the following is a specication.
rllhis invention relates to an improved pin cushion, the object being to provide a pin cushion which is adapted to be used as a pin cushion and also to contain needles, buttons and a thimble and which will present an ornamental and amusing appearance, preferably being formed in the'shape of a human head with a Chinese face, a pigtail being attached to the top of the head, whereby the device as a whole may be suspended from any convenient hook or fixture. The pigtail is made of pieces of thread which can be separated from the pigtail when des ired for use.
The invention consists in a pin cushion such as described in the following specilication and in the combination of elements set forth' in the claims.
Referring to the drawings: Figure lis a front elevation of my improved pin cushion. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same.
ln the drawings like numerals refer to like parts.
Referring to the drawings, 5 is a cushion consisting of a silk covering 6 stu'ed with a suitable material such as wool 7. The cushion is formed to represent a Chinese head and through the central portion of the cushion projects a boX 9 having a bottom 10 in which can be inserted papers of needles 11, said bottom, therefore, constituting a needle case. Within the box 9 may be placed buttons 12 and a thimble 13.
A cover 8 is provided with an extension 14 which projects into the box 9. rIhis cover has a loop 15 attached thereto which engages loops of coarse thread 16, and these oops of coarse thread are' loosely braided into a series of pieces of ine thread or silk 17, the resulting braid forming a pigtail 18 which has a loop 19 thereon by means of which the pin cushion may be suspended from any suitable support or hook. The.
ne threads 17 represent hair` and at their lower ends extend through the cover 8 to the inside thereof (see Fig. 2) and. then project outwardly through said cover again and downwardly to form a fringe, representing a bang of hair around the forehead of the head shaped cushion.
In use, the device is suspended, as hereinbefore set forth, by means of the loop 19 and when it is desired to use the needles they may be removed from the case 10 and when it is desired to use the buttons and thimble, the cover 8 is removed from the cushion and the articles'desired are taken out of .the box 9. rlhe threads 16 and 17 can be detached from the pigtail by pulling them out when it is desired to use the same.
l claim:
1. A cushion, a plurality of. threads loosely braided together and detachable one at a time from each other, the free ends of said threads projecting through and beyond a portion of said cushion whereby they are detachably fastened thereto and form, as a whole; a means whereby said cushion may be suspended from a suitable support'and from which means one of said threads may be detached at a timev while leaving the balance of said threads intact as a suspending means. v
2. A cushion, a loop attached thereto and -a plurality of threads extending through said loop, the free ends of said threads being braided together to form, as a whole, a means whereby said cushion may be suspended from a suitable support.
3. A cushion, a loop attached thereto and two sets of threads, the threads of one of said sets extending through said loop and having their ends braided with the threads of the other of said sets, the free ends of the threads of said last-named -set projecting through and beyond a portion of said cushion whereby they are detachably fastened to said cushion, said two sets forming, as a whole, a means whereby said cushion may be suspended from a suitable support.
In testimony whereof ll have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses. v
` H. SLATER..
