To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD H. Dnwsox, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fluid-Compressors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fluid compressors, and is a division of application, Serial No. 713,089, liled August 3, 1912.
As is well known, the crank case chamber of a fluid compressor is usually provided with an atmospheric vent opening, so as to permit inflow and outflow of air corresponding with the movement of the compressor piston. Air drawn into the crank case chamber from the atmosphere contains dirt particles which to a greater or less extent work into the bearing parts of the compressor causing undue wear and leakage.
The principal object of my invention is to prevent dirt particles from entering the crank case chamber and for this purpose it is proposed to connect the usual atmospheric vent port of the compressor with purified air chamber of the air strainer usually employed in connection with the compressor for purifying the air before compression.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a view of an air strainer in transverse section applied to a fluid compressor, showing my invention embodied therein, and Fig. 2 a horizontal section of the air strainer.
Any form of air strainer may be employed, but in the drawing I have shown the improved air strainer which is covered by my pending application, Serial No. 713,089, filed August 3, 1912, comprising a sheet steel tank 1 having a centrally arranged ba-flie plate 9 dividing the tank into an inlet chamber 1% and an outlet or purified air chamber 22. At the lower end of the baflie plate 9 are diverging plates 10 and Specification of Letters Patent.

11, the plate 10 carrying an angle plate 12 having its lower flange dipping into a pool of oil 21 and the upper flange forming a baflle plate for air flowing from the inlet chamber 1-1 to the purified air chamber 22.
Air is drawn into the chamber 14: through the atmospheric inlet port 15 and is caused to impinge on the surface of the oil by the arrangement of battle plates, so that dirt particles in the air are taken up by the oil. The purified air then passes into the purified air chamber 22 and thence flows to the chamher 6 of the usual suction or intake Valve of the compressor. According to my invention, a pipe 26 is connected to the usual atmospheric port of the crank case chamber of the compressor 20 and said pipe leads to a port 27 opening into the purified air chamber 22, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. It will now be seen that the air drawn into the crank case chamber by the action of the compressor piston is taken from the purified air chamber of the air strainer, so that no dirt particles can get into the chamber from the atmosphere.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
The combination with a crank case chamber of a fluid compressor having a vent port, of a strainer for eliminating dirt from the fluid supplied to the compressor and having a purified air chamber, a pipe connection from said chamber to the inlet valve of the compressor and a pipe connection from said chamber to the vent port of the crank case chamber.
