ms STATES PATENT OFFICE."
BERNARD v. Arr-Em, or srommn, wnsnrire'ron.
SPICE-CABINET.
Be it known that I, BERNARD V. a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of Washington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spice-Cabinets, of which the following. is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved spice cabinet and has as its principal ob ect the provision of a device so arranged so that the proprietor may 'at all times determine the amount of stock contained therein;
A second object of my invention is to provide a device which not only gives a display face but is also readily accessible for the removal of articles for sale.
A final object of my invention resides in "the particular arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing:Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cabinet embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view taken on the line 22 of Fig.1 showing the second tier of display space and storage compartment. Fig. 3 is a view similarto Fig. 2 but showing the parts in Y the rear of the door so as to be convenient different position. Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3. 'Fig. 5 is a front elevation ofthe drawers shown in Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a detail view takenfrom the left of Fig. 5.- Fig. 7 isa detail view similar to Fig. 6 but taken from the right of Fig. v5.
Throughout the separate'views the same part is designated by the same reference character.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 is a combined storage and display cabinet made according to my invention and shown placed on a counter such as 2. The cabinet .1 is provided with sidewalls such as 3-3 and has a vertical partition such as 4, best shown in Figs. 2 and 3, which is.
placed near the front thereof. The front face of the cabinet is closed by a door such as 5 and the space contained between the partition 4 and the closed door 5 is divided Specification of Letters Patent. Pat t d N 30, 1915', Application filed January 11, 1915. Serial No. 1,615. i I l I mount-a drawer such as 11 in which is stored other packages of goods 8 of the same 7 character as those held in the display compartment on the same level with the drawer.
As the drawers 11 open rearwardly the salesman has .ready access-to the goods as the drawer, and metal shutter strips such as 14-14. The metal pieces 12, 13' and 14 are connected at their outer ends to a wooden end piece 15, and at their inner ends to the wooden strip 16, which forms the front end I of the drawer. I
In order to facilitate the withdrawal of a package when desired, the side walls 3'-3 of the cabinet are cutaway in a step formation as clearly shown in Fig. 1, and the rear ends of the drawers are left uncovered. Consequently the salesman does not have to open a drawer in order to take out a package. Moreover, I provide means whereby the packages are automatically brought to to the hand. Such means comprise a cross piece. 17 which is mounted within the ends of the drawers so as to slide on the strips 14 and 13 and which is connected by a 7 spring 18 to the end piece15. It will be seen from the foregoing that the slidable piece 17 urged by the'spring 18 will constantly press the packages 8 to the rear of the drawer where they. can be readily obtained.
In order to facilitate the introduction of V the packages into the drawers I provide a spring catch 19 which is mounted so as to project forwardly through a central slot 20 in the member 17. The member 16 also is provided with a central slot 21 and when the member 17 is pulled so as to extend the spring 18 toits full extent, the catch 19 will be pressed over the forward edge of the bottom of the slot 21 so as to hold the member-17 against the member 16 with the spring in extended position. If now the drawer is pushed into the cabinet.to its fullestextent the upwardly inclined end 22 of the spring catch 19 will strike the inclined surface of a notch 23 hollowed out of the rear face of the member 4 and lift the spring catch out of'engagement with the'edge ofthe s10t"21 whereupon the presandwhich extends between the curved lower sure of the spring 18 will be exerted against the packages in the drawers. It will be seen that the spring 18 is attached directly to plates 24 and 25- which are carried by the - members 15 and 17, respectively.
In order to facilitate the making of an inventory and to enable the amount of.stock to be readily told at any time, I provide an indicator disk which isv pivotally mounted at the outer end or right hand end, of the drawer as shown in Fig. 4. The disk 30 is numbered on its exterior as shown in Fig. 5 while its inner surface is notched as shown at 31 in Figs. 6 and 7. A spring catch 32 fastened to the front of the member 15 normally holds the disk 30 from turning in any but the desired direction. A pawl 33 is provided which is pivoted at the end of a short lever 34. The pawl 33,-is thrown into engagement with the notched surface 31.
by means of a spring member which is also fastened to the front of the member 15 end of the pawl 33 and the face of the end piece 15. The lever 34 is fixed to a shaft 35 which is journaled at the upper edge of the end piece 15 by means of suitable brackets such as 36'. Fixed to the shaft 35' are shown two arms such as 3636 which extend inwardly from the end piece 13 and partly cover the open spaceat the rear end ofthe drawer. It will be evident that the arms 36 cover the most accessible packages in the drawer and that these arms must be lifted to remove oneof the packages, unless the drawer should be open. If the arms 36 I are thrown up into the position shown in Fig. 7 then the pawl 33 will be forced down turning the disk 30. Consequently, each time a package is removed from a drawer,
the disk 30 is turned so as to indicate this fact. If desired, of course, the disk 30 may be numbered in the reverse direction so as to indicate the number of packages remaining in the drawer instead of the number which have been taken out. In order to facilitate the lifting of the arms 36 the edges of the drawers are notched as shown at 37. It will be understood, of course, that the arms 36 may be covered with a plate to prevent dust from settling in the uncovered portion of the drawer.
It Will be understood that while I have shown and described the preferred form of .my invention,I contemplate the use of mechanical equivalents for the parts described herein wherever such substitutions may be found advantageous. 7 Having thus described my invention what I claim is 1. The combination with a cabinet having at least one drawer therein, of a spring operated member slidably mounted in said drawer for forcing packages toward the outer end of the drawer, means for holding said member against its spring, and means for. releasing saidholdingmeans when the drawer is pushed into the cabinet its fullest extent. I I
2. The combination with a cabinet ,having at least one drawer therein, of a ,spring operated member slidably mounted in said drawer for forcing packages toward the outer end of the drawer,means for holding said member against its spring, and'means for releasing said holding means when the drawer is pushed into the cabinet its fullest extent, said holding means comprising a
