STRAP FOR PANTALOONS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 1,161, dated May 30, 1839.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, M. H. SIMPSON, of the city of Boston, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Making or Constructing Spring- Straps for Pantaloons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof.
In the accompanying drawing Figure l, represents the spring strap in the form in which I usually make it. A, A, are end pieces which may be made of leather, cloth, or other' material suitable for being attached by buttons, or otherwise, to the pantaloons. B, B is a fiat spring of steel wire, or of other suitable metal, which is made by winding or coiling said wire in a manner well known to workmen around a piece of hoop iron or other thin metal former of the proper width for the intended purpose. This i'lat wire spring is to be attached to the end pieces, before named, by sewing them to two or three of the outer coils or in any other convenient way, which completes the strap. Then thus made the coiled wire spring is to be of suiticient length to extend across the bottom ot' the boot or shoe and to extend to some height above its edges on the sides of the foot, no part of the leather or other material of which the ends are composed being intended to be below the foot.
Fig. 2, shows another modification of my spring strap, in which the spring does not extend entirely under the foot, but is divided into two parts, their inner ends being connected together by a thin plate of metal O, or other suitable material, while their outer ends are attached to leather or cloth end pieces, as in the first named kind of strap. The spring part, of coiled wire, passes, in this case, in part under the foot and rises upon each side of it, affording the necessary elasticity.
I am aware that spring straps for pantaloons are not new, they having been constructed in various ways. They have been made with round and with flat coiled springs, but in all cases, as I believe, said springs have been covered with leather or have had leather or other material passing through them in such a way as to be necessary to their action.
The distinguishing feature of my invention is the employment of a flat metallic spring connected with leather or other material at its ends only, its elastic action resulting from the drawing the coils apart by the tension on their ends, said metallic spring either passing entirely under the foot or, it' divided into two parts, extending in part under the foot, on each side, the intermediate part being occupied by a plate of metal or other suitable substance, as described. Spring straps of this description are more durable, cleanly, and convenient in use than any other kind which I have known to be made. Their elasticity is such as to admit of their being readily slipped over the heel of the boot or shoe whenever it is desirable.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The above described mode of constructing spring straps for pantaloons by attaching a simple coiled spring 01"' wire, made flat, to the end pieces by which the strap is to be attached to the pantaloons, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
