SANITARY TOILET-SEAT.
specification of LettersL raient. l Panted N0v 16,1915,
` Application led'November 20, 1914. Serial No. 873,109.
Tov all colto/nt it mctjz/ concern:
Be 1t known that I, EDWARD'WALDER, a
citizen'of thek VUnited States, `residing at Lak Grange, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois,L have invented certain 'new' and useful Improvementsin Sanitary Toilet-Seats, of which thefollo'wing isk a specilication.
This invention relates to improvementsin sanitary toilet seats, and has reference more particularly to that class of such devices wherein the upper surface of the seat proper, when not in use, `is subjected to the actiony of a `disinfectant and deodorizing material for sanitary purposes. e
The main object of the invention is to provide an improved toiletseat of this type, and
one wherein the seat 'proper maybe most effectively and thoroughly disinfeeted at all times when not'in use. l
Another objectof the inventionis to provide a toilet seat of the character 'specified which shall enable the bowl and seat proper to be easily and thoroughly cleaned, ywhen required, especiallyin those parts that are more orfless inaccessible for cleaning'purposes in the common or` ordinary toilet seat;
Another object of the invention isnto provide a construction vreadily facilitating the application and renewal of thedisin'fecting agent when required. f
Other minor objects and benefitsy of vthe invention will be apparent from the follow ing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein I have illustrated one approved mechanical embodiment of the invention and in which- Figure .1 is a side elevation of my improved toilet seat, they seat proper being shown by full lines in serviceposition 'and by dotted lines in its normalelevatedposi'4 tion; Fig.` 2 is a top plan vview of the same, partly broken kout andin horizontal section;
Fig. 8 is a front elevation.
Referring tothe'drawings, 5 designates the bowl which `may be in the usual form. Extending through apertures in the rear upper extension f5 xof the bowl are the threaded vertical .ends 6 of a;pair of bent rods'7, secured strongly in place` by nuts 8 and 9. The rods 7 extend laterally and forwardly beneath thek upper rim of the bowl, and constitute supports for the side arms 1() of abail-shaped frame piece 11, said arms f1 being hingedto the rods`7 bypivot bolts or studs 12k; Mounted on theiforward end of the frame member 11 is the seat proper 13,1*
which, in yaccordance with the present in#k vention,`is made of a generally shallow U" form;` so as to cover. something less than the forward half lof the upper rim `ofthe bowl. 'Threaded onto the upper ends 6 of the rods'f?, and thereby locking the nuts 8 in place,A are a pair of tubular posts 141, on which is mounted a seatcasing 1.5 that preferably, and as'here'in shown, has an outline shape and size :substantially following the shape and size of theseat block 13.` This casing, as shown, has top, bottom, side and rear walls and an open front, its top and bottom walls being suitably 4apertured to receive the posts 14. The casing is supported on its underside byv collars 16 adjustably mounted on the posts 14 by set-screws 17, andthe upper ends of the posts v14 are threaded to receive nuts 18, by which the casing is `securely clamped and confined on the post.
-Within the rear portion of the casing 15 is i located a thin sheet metal boX 19 having aV perforated front lwall 20 and adapted to contain absorbent'.l cotton or similar material thoroughly impregnated with any suitableV material having one orali of the qualities of disinfectmg, antiseptic and deodorizing substances/this box being normally confined in` jected to the action of the fumes emitted by i e the disinfecting material through the perforated front wall of its container. When the seat is to be usedit is simply drawn down to the horizontal position shown by full lines in ythe rseveral figures, and, ywhen released from the Weight of the occupant, the weights 21y automatically restore it to elevated position. Y
Iamy aware that it has heretofore ybeen proposed toprovide a vertical support in rear of a hinged toilet seat, and to secure a disinfectant pad to the front surface of said support,said pad acting upon the upper surface of the seat maintained in elevated position by spring hinges. In such a construction, however, the seat receives only a small per cent. of the disinfecting action and capacity of the pad, since the fumes are not confined and directed upon the surface of the seat,"but are more or` less scattered and dispersed in other directions, especially where there may be more or less of a current of air passingfbetw'een the seat and the pad. It will be noted that in my improved device the seat is completely vhoused within and practically fills ythe openfront of the disinfectantpcasing, so that draf-ts` are shut ofi",
p and the upper surface `of the seat is necesreplace the same, and remount the casing on.
the posts. The casing 15 may be made of any suitable or desired material, but is readily capable of being made in porcelain or any other ornamental material harmonizing having top, bottom, sideand rear wallsV When ing with the material of the bowl.
edge of the casing 15 are ample to protect the clothes of thel user from direct contact with the perforated front of thel disinfectant box, so that there is no danger of soiling or injuring the clothes of users of the device.
It will be manifest to those skilled in this art that the structure described may be modified in many details without departing'from the principle of the invention or lessening the practical utility thereof. Hence, the invention is not limited to the precise form, structure and arrangement of coperating parts s'hownV and described, except to the extent indicated within the purview of the appended claims.
I claim: u
