Be it known that I, JosnrI-I M. ROTH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New York city, borough of Brooklyn, county of Queens, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stove Attachments or Guards, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved stove attachment or guard adapted for application between the opposed walls of the ash pit door-opening of a stove, and more particularly to a kitchen range, to prevent ashes, dirt or hot coals from dropping out or flying onto the floor and soiling the latter, or setting fire to the house or building.

It is among the objects of the present invention to improve and simplify this class of devices by constructing the same of sheet material, preferably sheet metal, so as'to positively insure against the escape of the coals as compared with a device constructed of wire-mesh, the device being produced from a pair of sections of novel form slidably connected so that the guard is adjustable in length to fit door-openings of different sizes or widths without alteration of its construction; said sections beingequipped for ready and convenient engagement with stove walls of different thicknesses and means being provided for catching hold 'of the article for applying and removing the same, and adjusting the sections with respect to each other.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention, as will appear as the description proceeds, comprises the various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be more fully described hereinafter and set forth with particularity in the claims appended hereto.

To illustrate the application of the invention, in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings a fragmentary portion of a stove or range 5 1s shown, the same being of the usual kitchen type having a feed door 6, fire-box door 7 adjacent to the grate 8 and front firebox bars 9, well known in this class of stoves. Below the fire-box 10 and grate 8, is the ash pit 11 for receiving the ashes, burnt coals and clinkers from the fire, and said ash pit has a door opening permitting access thereto, and which is adapted to be opened or closed by a door 12, preferablyof the usual draft regulator type. It is customary in the use of this class of stoves either to open the draft regulator or the door 12, or perhaps the door 7 so as to supply extraordinary draft to the fire to support combustion, and in some cases, this is necessary in order to cause the fire to burn where the draft is poor, the door 12 serving through the medium of the door-opening of the ash-pit to permit access to the latter for removing the ashes or cleaning out the ashpit, or turning over the fire, commonly called raking or poking. Much annoyance results and danger exists in this practice, or in leaving the doors open, as it is necessary to do at times in order to furnishthe proper draft, due to the dropping out or flying of hot coals with the resultant soiling or setting fire to the floor and house, and it is the object of the present invention to obviate or evitate these objectionable features. To this end, the devised attachment or guard forming the subject-matter of the present invention and which is indicated as a whole by the numeral 13, comprises a pair or plurality of sections 1 1 and 15, each formed of or stamped from a single or any number of sections of material, such as sheet metal, or cast, though preferablyv formed of stamped sections of sheet tin, which may be painted or galvanized. The sections 1 1 and 15 are of substantially rec tangular formand each is provided at its outer edge with a tapered or triangular extension 16, with converging edges 17 and 18 extending at acute angles relative to the planes of the sections or front portions 14: and 15, so that the extensions 16 form the ends'of the guard.

The sections are slidably and adjustably connected so as to be moved relatively for adjusting the length of the guard to fit door openings of different sizes or widths, and for this purpose, in the illustrated embodiment, the section 14 is recessed at its top and bottom edges as shown at19, thus providing shoulders 20 at the ends thereof, at spaced points from the ends of the section 14. The top and bottom edges of the section 15 from the inner end of the latter, slidably receive the section 14:, said edges for this purpose being rolled or rebent inwardly toward each other as shown at 21 to provide guideways for receiving the top and bottom edges of the section 1 1, so as to slidably connect the sections, while the shoulders 20 form stops for engagement by the ends of the rebent portions to limit the displacement of the sections in lengthening and shortening the guard, for the purposes above specified, and others as Will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to facilitate the application and removal of the guard, the sections thereof are provided with grasping portions or handles 22 and 23, the former being in the form of an angular bracket attached to the section 14 by riveting or otherwise, so as to provide an outstanding grasping part extending in a plane at right angles to the section or plate. The other grasping portion or handle is produced by cutting the section 15 longitudinally at two points and along two parallel lines communicating with the free inner edge thereof, the intermediate tongue thus formed being severed for a portion of its length to form a longitudinal slot open at its inner end, while the remaining portion of the tongue is bent back at right angles to the section or plane of the surface thereof so as to oppose the portion 22. By grasping the portions 22 and 23, the sections may be moved relatively to vary the length of the guard, and thus to enable the same to be applied to or removed from the door opening, the grasping portion or handle 22 being normally out of the slot 24 but adapted to move into the same when the sections are telescoped and the guard shortened.

The rear edges of the extensions or end portions are recessed intermediately as shown at 25 and contiguous with the upper and lower edges thereof, the extensions are slit or cut as shown at26 to provide projecting upper and lower tongues 27 bent outwardly at right angles from the edges 17, while the tongues produced between the cuts 26 and indicated by the numeral 28 are also bent at right angles to the ends of the guard and in spaced relation to the tongues 27. By

I this structure, the device is adapted to be applied or fitted in the ash pit door opening or other opening of the stove, the spaced parallel tongues receiving the side walls of the opening therebetween, but the tongues being adapted to be bent to accommodate and hold the guard to walls of different thicknesses and shapes. When so applied, the edges. 17 will be vertically disposed, the sections of the guard slanting downwardly and inwardly, and the upper edges 18 sloping outwardly and downwardly, and since the guard terminates below the top of the door opening, clearance space is provided therebetween for inserting a poker to rake the fire, while still preventing the escape of fiying coals due to the fact that the latter invariably fly downwardly to some degree. The recessing of the bottom edge of the section let also produces a slot through which air may be supplied to the fire to support combustion, as against any air which may be cut off by the guard, while the latter also serves as a deflector to direct the air through said slot. The device may be made in various sizes, but the adjustment may allow a wide range of use of the guards of each size.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the device as claimed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America, is;

l. A stove attachment for application to the ash pit opening of a kitchen range or the like, comprising a guard having an inclined front portion and end extensions at right angles thereto or substantially so, said extensions having spaced bendable engaging members to receive the walls of the door opening of a stove to removably secure the guard thereto.

2. A fire guard for ranges and the like which may be fitted to the ash pit door opening, comprising a front part having end portions projecting substantially at right angles thereto, means on the end portions to engage the side walls of the door opening, said front portion sloping downwardly and inwardly from its upper to its lower edge and the end portions slanting outwardly and downwardly with their upper edges contiguous with the upper edge of the front portion to provide a space between the top of the opening and the guard to render accessible the raking of the fire while precluding the escape of flying sparks and the like therebetween.

3. A guard of the character described, comprising a pair of sections having front portions, means at the edges of the front portions to ,slidably connect the sections and limit the relative displacements thereof longitudinallyvvith respect to each other and horizontally with respect to a door opening, handles on each section to hold the guard and adjust the sections to vary the horizontal dimension thereof With respect to the Width of the door opening in applying and removing the same, extensions at the ends of the sections and spaced bendable tongues formed on and projecting from the free edges of the ends of said sections.

4. A guard for the ash pit door opening of kitchen ranges and the like, comprising slidably connected imperforate sections With inclined. front portions said sections being adjustable across the Width of the door opening, and means at the ends of said sections for engaging the end Walls of said door opening.

5. A guard of the character set forth, comprising a plurality of plates With end portions, means at said end portions for engaging the opposed vertical Walls of a door opening, said plates having cooperating recesses and rebent portions engaged therewith at the top and bottom edges of the plates for slidably connecting the same, the end Walls of said recesses limiting the sliding movements of the plates.
