SHEET-METAL BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
patentes new. ie, freie.
. .application led December 3, 1912. Serial No. 734,712.
To all 107mm t may conce/fn.'
Be it lrnown that l, HARRY L. HUDSON, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Brooklyn, in the City and State of New York, have inrented'a new and useful Improvement in Sheet-Metal Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my. invention is to provide a sheet metal box inwhieh the top member may be interloelred to the body of the bor;
View in side'elevation of the separate top member.
The body portion of the box shown herein comprises a lower tubular membery 1 and an upper tubular member 2. rElie upper edge of' thelower member l is permanently united to the lower edge of the upper tubular member 2, as, for instance, by crimping the edges together.
The upper edge of the upper tubular member 2 is turned inwardly, as shown at 3, forming an inner annular shoulder at the mouth or the box. (The separate top member 4 has a depending flange 5 which is fitted to be inserted within the mouth of the body portion of the box, the said flangeA tting closely the inwardly turned upper edge of the upper tubular member 2. This flange is provided with means for limiting the entry o the top member into the upper tubular member, which means, in the present instance, is shown as a peripheral external shoulder 6 arranged to engage the upper edge or the tubular member 2 when the top member is inserted into position.
rlie depending flange 5 of the top member 4- is further provided with means for interloelring the top member to the body portion of the box, which means is herein shown as one or more upwardly directed spring tongues 7 pressed outwardly from the flange at the proper point to snap outwardly under the inwardly turned upper edge 3 of the upper tubular member 2,*when the top member 4: is inserted into its position.
F rom the above description it will be seen that a box is provided inA which the separate top member "may be interloclied .with the body portion of the box after the box has been filled and that any attempt on the part of a person to remove the top member for. I
unlawfully relling the box or for any other purpose, will only serre to more firmly loe-h the top member to the body portion of the esv box, as the tongue or tongues 7 will be forced into'the space between the inwardly turned flange 3 and the wall of the upper tubular member 2.
It. is evident that slight changes may be vresorted to in the form, construction and arrangement of the'seyeral parts without departing from tnespirit and scope of my invention; hence T do not wish to limit my self strictly thestructure herein set forth',
but
1. A sheet metal box comprising a tubular member having an inwardly turned up# per edge and 'a separate 'top member having a depending flange fitted toenter the tubular member, said flange being provided with yielding means arranged to snap outwardly under the said inwardly turnedupper edge of the tubular member for permanently locking the top member against withdrawal. 1
2. A sheet metal box comprising e. tubular member haring anV inwardly turned upper edge and a separate top member having a depending flange iitted to enter the tubular member, said flange being provided with yieldingmeans arranged to snap outwardly under thesaid inwardly turned upper edge of the tubular member for permanently leeking the top member against withdrawal, the said Harige being further provided with means arranged to engage the turned upper edgeV of the tubular member for limiting the entry of the top member.
3. A sheet metal box comprising a tubular member having an inwardly turned upper edge and a separate top member having a depending flange fitted to enter the tubular member, said flange being provided with 'yielding means arranged to snap outwardly under the said inwardly turned upper edge or the tubular member for permanently locking die top member against withdrawal, the said Tiange being further provided with a peripheral external shoulder arranged to eniop ies
gage member for limiting tbe entry of 'the top the turned upper edge of the tubular membern Y el. A sheet metal box comprising :1 tubuler member haring an inwardly turned upper edge and e seperate top member 'harving a depending flange iitted to enter the tubular member, Seid lienge being provided with one or more upwardly directed spring tongues pressed outwardly therefrom arranged to snap outwardly upper edgeof .ad tubular member for permanently locking the top member against Withdrawal.
5. A sheet metal box comprising e tilbulnr member having en inwardly turned upper edge and e. separate top member having e depending lzinge litted to enter the tubular member. eid [lange being provided with ene or mire upwardly directed spring` tongues pressed. euinmrdly therefrom ar ranged to snap entwerdly under' the in- 4` under the inwardly turnedV es my invention, I have werdly turned upper edgepf Said tubular member for permanently flocking the top member against withdrawal, the said flange being further provided-With :i peripheral external Shoulder arranged toengage the tul billar member for limiting the entryvot' the top member. 6. A sheet metal 'box comprising u lower tubular member7 :in upper tubular memberpermanently vunited thereto` and having en inwardly turned upper edge and a seperate top member permanently intel-locked with the inwardly turned upper edge 'of the seid upper tubular member.
In testin'ieny,l that I claim the foregoing signed my name in presence of two \vitnesses, this twentieth day'o November 1912.
