METAL STRIP FOR WINDOWS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 16, 1915.
Application filed July 7, 1915. Serial No. 38,540.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM STEGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Metal Strip for Windows, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a window strip construction adapted to keep out air, dust and the like, and to be used in connection with sliding sashes and the window frame which receives the sashes.
The invention aims primarily to provide a novel form of carrying member and to assemble therewith a spring tongue of novel form, the tongue. acting as a closure.
Another object of the invention is to provide a window strip which will not interfere seriously with the sliding movement of the sashes.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description "proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 shows in longitudinal vertical section, a window frame carrying sashes equipped with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a detail enlarged from Fig. 1 and applicable, in a general sense, to all forms of the invention; Fig. 4 is a fragmental front elevation of the window frame, parts being removed; Fig. 5 is a fragmental vertical section showing the upper portion of the upper sash of a modified construction; Fig. 6 IS a fragmental vertical section showing the meeting horizontal rails of a pair of sashes in the modified construction; Fig. 7 is a fragmental vertical section showing the lower sash of themodified construction cooperating a bend 22 receiving with the window sill; Fig. 8 is a fragmental horizontal section showing 'a mounting of a pair of sashes of the sort shown in Figs. 5, 6 and 7.
In carrying out the invention and referring particularly to Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4, a window frame is shown, the same comprising sides 1, a sill 2, a cap 3, an outer guide strip 4, a strip 6 and a sill plate 7 The upper sash comprises a top bar 8, a bottom bar 9 and stiles 10. In the top 8 there is formed a groove 11, one wall of which is inclined as shown at 12. f
The invention comprises a carrying member 14 in the form of a strip coextensive in length with the top bar 8, the carrying member including a base 15 lying against the under face of the cap 3, and a depending web 16, the lower edge of the web 16 being formed into a bend 17 which is laterally extended to form a bead l8 terminating in a lip 19 disposed approximately parallel tothe web 16.
The invention comprises a resilient tongue in the form of a strip 20, co-extensive in length with the carrying member. The free edge of the tongue lies to one side of the we 16 of the carrying member and is flexed to form a rib 21. The tongue 20 comprises the bend 17 of the carrying member, a bead 23, receiving the bead 18 of the carrying member, an outer bend 24 receiving the edge of the lip 19 of the carrying member, and a lip 25, bound closely and tightly between the lip 19 of the carry ing member and the web 16 thereof.
The construction above described is carried out in connection with the sides 1 of the window frame and the stiles .10 of the upper sash. It is not necessary, therefore, to enumerate all of the parts again, but, in Fig. 1, the carrying member is shown at 26 and the tongue at 27, screws 28* or other securing elements being employed for connecting the carrying member 26 with the sides 1 of the window frame.
The, lower sash comprises a top bar 29, a bottom bar 30 and stiles 31. The carrying members which are assembled with the sides 1 of the window frame and cooperate with the stiles 31 of the lower sash are in- METAL STAMPING 00.,
dicated at 32 and the tongues are indicated The carrying member on the sill 2 which co6perates with the bottom bar 30 of the lower sash appears at 34 and is of the form hereinbefore described in detail. If desired, however, the carrying member 34 on the carrying member 34 together with their respective tongues, are mitered together as shown at 37, adjacent the lower corners of the window frame. It is therefore possible to remove the screws which hold the various carrying members on the window frame, to
remove the inner guide strips 6 and the sill plate 7, and to swing the lower sash out of the window frame, horizontally, carrying with it the various protecting strips. An extensive tearing to pieces, therefore, is not necessary to mount in place or to remove the strips forming the subject matter of this application.
In practical operation, when the u per sash is raised, the inclined wall 16 o the groove 11 bears against the rib 21 on the tongue 20 and thus a closure is effected to one side of the carrying member. The rib 23 bears against the opposite wall of the groove 11 and thus a closure is efiected on the other side of the carrying member.
In connection with those strips which extend vertically, it is to be observed that two lines of slidin contact only are provided, namely along t 1e rib 21 and along the bead 23. The window frames, therefore, slide vertically, without greatly increased friction.
In effecting a closure between the bottom bar 9 of the upper sash and the top bar 29 of the lower sash, a strip 38 is secured to the bottom bar 9 and isbent to form an upstanding flange 39. In the top bar 29 of the it wer sash a groove 40 is formed, one wall of which is inclined as shown at 41. The carrying member appears at 42 and comprises a bend 43, a bead 44 and a lip 45 as hereinbefore described. The tongue is shown at 46 and its intermediate longitudinal rib appears at 47. The tongue 46 includes a bend 48 receiving the bend 43 on the carrying member, a bead 49, receiving the bead 44 on the carrying member, a bend 50 receiving the lip 45 on the carrying member, and a lip 51 bound closely between the lip 45 on the carrying member and the body portion of the carrying member.
When the lower sash is pushed downwardly or when the upper sash is pushed upwardly until the bars 9 and 29 are in horizontal alinement as shown in Fig. 1, the head 48 on the spring tongue bears against 1 the flange 39 of the strip 38 and the head 48 coacts with the'strip 38 proper, the flange 39 being receivedby the inclined wall 41 of the groove 40.
In Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 8, the construction has been modified slightlv for use in connection with hollow window sash frames.
In Fig. 5 of the drawings, the cap portion of the window frame appears at 52 and a strip 53 is attached thereto by means of securing elements 54, the strip comprising a downwardly extended, double walled flange 55. The top rail of the upper sash appears at 56 and secured theretoby means of screws 58' or the like is a carrying member 57 ofiset as shown at 59 and comprising a bend 60 and a lip 61. The tongue appears at 62 and comprises an intermediate longitudinal rib 63, the bend 64 of the tongue cooperating with the bend 60 of the carrying member. The tongue is further provided with a bend '65 receiving the free edge of the lip 61 on the carrving member, the tongue terminating in a lip 66 bound tightly against the body portion of the carrying member by means of the lip 61 on the carrying member. When the top sash is pushed upwardly, the rib 63 on the tongue coiiperates with the double walled flange 55 and effects a tight closure.
Passing to Fig. 6, wherein the midrall closure is shown, the top rail of the lower sash appears at 67 and the bottom ra11 of the upper sashappears at 68. By means of screws 70 or the like, a strip 69 is secured to the rail 67, the strip being bent as shown at 71 to form a depending flange 72. By means of screws 74, a carrying member 73 is attached to the bottom rail 68 of the upper sash, the carrying member comprising a web 75, a bend 76 and a lip 77. The tongue appears at 78 and is provided with a rib 7 9, a bend 80 cotiperating with the bend 76, a bend 81 receiving the free edge of the lip 77, and a lip 82 which is engaged and held by the lip 77 in the manner hereinbefore described. Obviously, when the sashes are in closed position, the rib 79 will coact with the flange 72.
In Fig. 7 of the drawings, the sill appears at 83 and the bottom rail of the lower sash is shown at 84. A strip 85' is secured to the sill 83 by means of attaching elements 86 and terminates in an upstanding, double -walled flange 87. The carrying member is shown at 88'and is attached to the bottom rail 84,'the carrying member being ofli'set as shown at 89 and including a bend 90 and a lip 91. The tongue appears at 92 and its longitudinal intermediaterib is shown at 93. The bend 94 on the tongue receives the bend 90 of the carrying member, a bend 95 in the tongue receiving the free edge of the lip 91 of the carrying member, and the lip 96 of the tongue being engaged by the lip of the carrying member as before. When the lower sash is pushed downwardly, the bead or rib 93 on the spring tongue coacts with the double walled flange 87 in a manner which will be obvious from the drawings.
In the horizontal, sectional figure, which is numbered 8, a portion of the side frame appears at 97 and the parting strip is shown at 98. Strips 99 are attached to the parting strip 98 and are bent to form double walled flanges 100, cooperating respectively with the stile 101 of die upper sash and the stile 102 of the lower sas Carrying members 103 are applied tothe stiles 101 and 102 and are provided with bends 104 and lips 109. The tongues appear at 105 and provided with the longitudinal ribs 106. Lips 108 on the tongues 105 coact with the lips 109 on the carrying members, the bends 108 and 110 receiving respectively the lips 109 of the carrying members and the bends 104 thereof.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A window strip comprising a carrying member having a bend defining a lip; and a spring tongue extended longitudinally of the carrying member at one side thereof, the tongue having a pair of bends, one of which engages the bend of the carrying member, the other of which receives the lip on the other side of the carrying member.
