To all whom z'may concern:
Be it known that I, VACLAV A. ADAMEC, a Subj ect of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fenders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in fenders and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this character having novel and improved means whereby a rescue is assured irrespective of the position of the person struck.
The invention consistsv in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved fender whereby certain important advantages are attainedy and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claims.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure Il is a view in side elevation of a fender constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, the coacting portion of the vehicle being indicated by dotted lines; Fig. 2 is a view in top plan of the device as illustrated in Fig. 1, with the rear buffer omitted; Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary view partly in elevation and partly in section, illustrating certain details of the invention as herein included; Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 6--6 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 7 is a rfragmentary view, partly in elevation and partly in section, illustrating the means for releasing the locking pawl herein embodied.

the base member 4 substantially V-shape in contour, with the apex thereof disposed outwardly and with its rear portion of a length in excess of the width of the frame F and the supporting wheels carried thereby.
At substantially its axial center the meinber 4y has secured thereto, and rotatable about a vertical axis, a stellar wheel 5 having pivotally engaged therewith the rods 6, one of said rods being rearwardly directed and operatively engaged with the crank 7 carried by the shaft 8 which will be hereinafter more particularly referred to. The remaining rods 6 have their' outer extremities operatively engaged at predetermined points with the recoil member 9 overlying the outer free marginal portions of the member 4 and adapted to be moved inwardly when brought in contact with an object, such inward movement of the recoil member terminating in a rotation of the stellar wheel 5 and a resultant rotation of the shaft 8.
Normally projecting beyond the member 4 is a frame 10 of a configuration substantially identical with that of the member 4 and said frame is operatively engaged with the arms 8 through the medium of the links posed between the rock arms 12 and the brackets 17 depending from the frame F.
It is to be observed that the outward movement of the frame 9 is suflicient to project,`
beyond the outer margins of the member 4,
and, should the object struck be a person Standing, serves to strike the lower extremities of,l the lower limbs of the person and assure his or her falling upon the member 4.
Pivotally engaged as at a with the member 4 in close proximity to the apex or outer end thereof is the upstanding arm 18 of predetermined length and provided along its outer edge with the operating arm 19 of the latch 20 coacting with the segmental rack 21 suitably positioned upon the base member 1, and whereby said arm 18 may be normally maintained upon a predetermined rearwardy disposed incline. The upper exf 'tremity of the arm 18 has secured thereto a flexible` strip or belt 22, the opposite extremity of which being suitably secured to the member 4 at a predetermined point adjacent the rear thereof.
I also. find it of advantage to secure to the iexible strip or belt 22 at opposite sides thereof the nets 23 also secured to the member 4 and disposed on predetermined downwardly diverging planes, for a purpose which is believed to be self-evident.
'.23 will be directed .thereby to the rear portion of the member 4 whereby the possibility of injury is substantially entirely eliminated.
lShould a person be struck by the forward or apex portion of the member 4, the contact fof the body with the operating arm 19 will disengage the latch 2O from the rack 21 whereby the arm 18 will move rearwardly and assume a horizontal plane and thereby offer no obstructionV or hindrance to the rescue. v
To further facilitate a rescue, especially when the body is brought in contact with the arm 18, Ifmd' it of advantage to employ the rods 24 positioned adjacent the outer or apex end of the member 4 and movable laterally thereof and in opposite directions, the inner 'or adjacent extremities of said rods beingv operatively engaged with the toggle 25 under control of the cam 26 secured to the lowerextremity of the arm 18. By this arrangement, it will .be perceived that upon rearward swinging movement being impartedto the karm 18, the rods 24 are forced outwardly. The arm'18 is adapted to be rel"turned manually to its normal or upright position.
Positioned above the rear portion of the member 4 is the buffer 27 of 'any desired construction and serving in a manner and' for a purpose which is believed to be selfevident. y

1. A device of the character described comprising a member, a second member posi tioned therebeneath'and mounted for movement relatively, thereto, automatic means for projecting the second member outward-ly; relative to the first named member, meansl for normally holding the second member in a retracted position, and automatic meansfor releasing said holdingimeans.

A device of the character described including a member, an arm projecting upwardly from said member adjacent the outer end thereof, a strip connecting the upper extremity of said arm and the rear portion of the member, and a fabric secured to said strip and to the member at opposite sides of the arm.
