Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed July 17, 1914. Serial No. 851,532.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, PAUL VVAGNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Culbertson, in vthe county of Sheridan and State of Montana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Flue-Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improve-' ments in cutting devices primarily intended for use in connection with boiler flue pipes, the primary object being to simplify and improve the existing art by providing a device of this character which shall embody the desirable features of simplicity of construction, cheapness in manufacture, and efficiency and accuracy in operation.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claim. i
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a viewillustrating the application of my improvement to a boiler flue, the flue pipe being shown in section, Fig. 2 is a similar view, a portion of the stock of the cutter being shown in section and the cutting wheel moved into operative engagement with the flue, Fig. 3 is an end view of the improvement. Fig. 4 is a central longitudinal sectional view through the same. Fig. 5 is an end elevation of a stock, the cutter and fulcrum wedge being removed, Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the spring arm showing the cutter wheel journaled thereon, and F ig. 7 is a perspective view of the combined rest and adjusting member for the spring arm of the cutter wheel. Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view of the inner stock member Referring now to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 designates a tube comprising a boiler flue, the same being secured to the end plates 2 but having its end formed with the usual angular flange or bead 3 which contacts with said plate adjacent to the opening through which the tube 1 passes.
My improved cutter is generally designated by the numeral 4 and embodies essentially a tubular stock 5 which is of a less cross sectional diameter than the interior of the flue tube 1. The stock may be made up of two sections 6 and 7 respectively, as illustrated in the drawings, one end of the section 6 having an interior threaded enlargement or sleeve 8 which receives the threaded end of the section 7, the section 7 in turn having its second end provided with a sleeve 9, similar to the sleeve 8 and both of the sleeves 8 and 9 have a plurality of openings 10 arranged radially of the central axial plane thereof. When only the section 6 is employed, the openings 10 are adapted to receive a fulcrum member, which fulcrum member is inserted within one of the openings 10 of the sleeve 9 of the section 7 when the stock is made up of two sections.
' The opposite end of the tubular section 6 is provided with a longitudinally extending slot or opening 12, and the opposite walls provided thereby being slitted transversely at the end wall of the said slot and at a. suitable distance from the end of the tube 6, as indicated by the numerals 13, and the metal between the slits is extended inwardly of the tubular members 6, providing guide walls 14 and l t which engage with the opposite sides of a substantially rectangular head 15 formed upon the end of a spring arm 16. The arm 16 is arranged at an angle to its head and its free end is also provided with an angular portion 17 having a threaded opening 18, the same being secured within the member 6 through the medium of a headed bolt 19 which has its shank passing through a suitable opening in the said member 6 and is received by the threads in the opening 18. The arrange ment of the spring is such that the head 15 will be normally sustained within the member 6 and not projected through the opening 12, and the tension of the spring is also exerted inthis direction, so that the head will not be projected through the said opening 12 except when forced in such direction, in a manner which will presently be described.
The head 12 is arranged upon one of the faces of the spring arm 16, which may be termed the outer face, and the said head is centrally slotted to provide the same with a pair of spaced arms, each of which has a longitudinally extending registering opening 20 which receives the shaft or trunnion 21 of a cutter wheel 22, the said cutter wheel being disposed between the said arms of the head and is, with the head, normally sustained in the members 6. The numeral 23 designates a collar which is-arranged upon the stock 5, the same having an adjusting screw 27 whereby the longitudinal movement of the said collar may be regulated, and the same properlypositioned with relation to the cutter Wheel 22.
Arranged Within the stock is a combined rest and adjusting member for the spring arm 16 of the cutter Wheel, the same comprising a Wedge-shaped member 28' having its reduced end formed With a longitudinally extending threaded shank 29. In the pres: ent instance, the shank 29 is connected ,With a longitudinally extending threaded rod 30 through the medium of a suitable sleeve'or nut 31,' the end of the rod 30*liaving arranged thereon a disk 32 Which closes the open end of the stock, a nut being 'arranged upon the threaded rod, the same bearing against the disk 32 toYprovide means for longitudinally adjusting the 'Wedge.

Having thus. described the invention, What I claim is;
In a flue'cutter, the combination of a hollow stock having a spring member provided with anangular head secured therein, a longitudi'nal Wedge-shaped fulcrum member;
upon Which the spring member rests, and a cutter Wheel arranged upon the angular head. of the spring, said stock being prov'i'ded with a longitudinal opening inone of its ends to" receive the head of the spring,
the acent Walls provided by the opening atthe terminal of the said opening and at a distance from the said terminal being slitted laterally and the portions between the shts being bent toward each other to contact with 7 the opposite sides' of the spring head'to provide guides therefor.
