This inv ntion r ates t an i p ov ment in grease cups.
One of the principal objects of the invention is to provide an improved grease cup having a cap hingedly connected to the body of the cup and carrying the plunger and associated mechanism, whereby the cup may be readily opened for filling, by simply swinging the cap back upon its hinges and without the necessity of the removal of any of the parts.
Another object of the nvent n is to pr vide an improved grease cup having or top to which a screw driven plunger is connected for reciprocation within the body of the cup, means being hingedly connected. to the cup for preventing the rotation of the plunger with the screw.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved grease cup of the class described, which will be extremely simple, durable, eflicient in operation, and inexpensive to manufacture,
With these and other objects in View which will become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several figures, of which- Figure 1 represents a view in section taken vertically and centrally through a grease cup constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 represents a view in section taken horizontally on the plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow. Fig. 3 represents a top plan view of the cup.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a cup whose body is indicated at 5. A pin 12 carried upon the body 5 is adapted to be engaged by the r 1 h gh n op ning i h latter, whereby to maintain the cap in closed position upon the body portion at will.
Disposed within cap 8 and swiveled near its upper end at the apex of the cap, is a threaded bolt or screw 13. The later extends within the cap and when said cap is elosed position upon the body of the grease cup, lies in the axis of the latter. Secured in suitable manner to the upper end of screw 13 on the outside of cap 8, is a turn button ll. The edges of the latter are serruee ed o s al p d s a while he central portion 16 is of a concavo-con-vex formation whereby to snugly rest upon the outer surface of the cap. By actuating this turn button l t, the screw 13 may be turned in one direction oranother at will.
T Pl n e h ugh t p io which suitable pressure is adapted to be exer-ted upon the contents of the cup at will, includes the upper and lower plates 17, between which a leather or other suitable washer 18 is bound, the edges of said washer being stamped over to provide a packing for the plunger. This plunger is of a diameter substantially equal to or slightly less than the internal diameter of body 5. The plunger is carried upon the lower end of a squared shank 19, having a threaded longitudinal bore through which the screw 13 is turned.
In order that the shank 19 may be held against rotation with the screw'13 while the latter is turned in reciprocating the plunger within the grease cup, a substantially rectangular guide loop 20 is provided. This loop at one end is hingedly connected through the medium of a clip 21, with the cap 8 inside of the latter, and at a distance above the lower edge of said cap. The
loop is adapted to swing upon its hinged end upwardly and downwardly. The stem 19 extends through the loop as clearly indicated in Fig. 2, and the loop is of such length that no matter whether the stem or shank 19 be at the upper or lower extremity of its movement, it will be embraced on two sides by the side bars of the loop. This guide 100p rests at its outer end upon the plunger through the action of gravity. The length of the shank 19 is such that the plunger may be forced clear into the lower end of the grease cup in order to entirely empty the same. I
Such a grease cup as I have provided may readily be opened by simply disengaging the arm 11 from pin 12 and swinging the cap back upon its hinge 9, so that no disadvantages incident to the ordinary grease cup, through the operation of removing various parts of the cup, are experienced. Before swinging the cap into open position, the plunger will be withdrawn into the cap so as to be in position when the cup is filled with grease, to be moved into the upper end of the cup whereby to exert the desired pressure upon the contents thereof. All of the operative parts of the device are carried by the cap, so that an extremely compact and simple construction and arrangement of parts is thus provided.
Although I have described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I may desire to make such changes in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts thereof, as do not depart from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
I claim r 1. A grease-cup comprising a cylindrical body, a dome-shaped cap hingedly connected therewith, means for detachably connecting the'cap and body' together in closed position, a screw swivelly connected with the cap and disposed within the same, a turn button fixedly connected with the screw and arranged exteriorly of the cap, a squared shank through which said screw is threaded, a plunger carried by the shank, and a rectangular loop hingedly connected adjacent one end with the cap and through which loop said shank extends, said loop adapted to maintain the shank against rotation.
2. A grease cup comprising a cylindrical body, a dome-shaped cap hingedly connected therewith, a screw swivelly connected with the cap and extending within the same, means whereby the screw may be operated at will from without the cap, a shank threaded upon the screw and being provided with a plunger, and means hingedly connected with the cap within the latter and engaging the shank for preventingrotation of the latter.
3. A grease-cup comprising a body, a cap hingedly connected therewith, a plunger connected with the cap and adapted to be reciprocated at will within the body, and means carried by the cap for preventing rotation of the plunger under influence of its operating means.
i. A grease-cup including a body, a cap hingedly connected therewith, a screw carried by the cap and adapted to be rotated at will, a plunger mounted upon the screw, and means carried by the cap for preventing rotation of the plunger when the screw is turned.
5. In a grease cup, a body, a cap hingedly connected therewith, a plunger mechanism carried by the cap, and a loop hingedly connected to the cap and operably engaging the plunger mechanism for limiting the latter to a reciprocating movement.
