. Be it known that 1, JAMES K. SHELTON, a citizen of. the United States, residing at Cuba, in the county of Sumter and State of.

Alabama, have. invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines;

and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,

such as willenable, others skilled in'the art towhich it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to useful ments in washing machines and has for its object to improve upon the generalconstruction of devices of this class to such an extent 7 as to not only provide an extremely eflicient machine, but one which may be easily and inexpensively manufactured and marketed. 'With this general object in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and in unique combinations. of partsto be hereinafter claimed and fully described by reference to the accompanying drawings wherein: V 1.

The upper end of the shaft 8 is provided with a lever 10 whereby it may be oscillated one thirdof a revolution, more or less, while the lower end of said shaft carried the wash-- l ing head designated in the drawing by the numeral 11, such head being provided with a plurality of loops 12 to which the articles to be washed are secured, whereby when the shaft: is oscillated, such articles will be dashed against the upright slats 5and will be drawn over the horizontal slats 6. The loops in question are in the form of upright C-shaped clips having their upper and lower'ends flattened-and extended in width to provide attaching plate 15, the several clips being heavily galvanized or tinned. These clips embrace the flanges 14 and the edge portions of the board 18, one clip being disposed adjacent each angle of the head. With theparts in these positions, the lowermost of the plates 15 contact with the adjacent ends of the several flanges 14 and driven fasteners 16 are passed through said plates and into said ends, while additional driven fasteners 17 are driven through the uppermost of the plates 15, the edge portions of'the board 13 and into the flanges 14.

It will thus be evident the same fasteners which secure the loops or clips 12 of the head, secure the several parts of the latter together, this being extremely simple yet highly efficient in construction.

In operation, the clothes to be washed are tied or otherwise secured to the several loops 12, the tub 1 is filledto the necessary extent with any appropriate washing fluid, and

the lever 10 is so actuated as to oscillate the 7 .head 11, the result being that the clothes are oscillated by the head and dashed against the slats 5 and 6, whereby such clothes are effectively washed. KDuring such operation of the machine, the diamond shaped box-like head-11 imparts an agitating motion to the fluid in the tub, since the several angularly disposed flanges l4: serve as fluid deflecting means for throwing the water outward and then allowing the same to again'r'ush inwardly, this operation assisting materially in the proper action of the machine.

The tub 1 may be furnishedas a part of the machine, in which case it will be provided with cleats 1' for the attachment of a wringer, or the remaining parts of the invention may be manufactured and sold independently 0f the tub, it being evident that such parts may be made of various sizes and may be applied to use upon ordinary wash tubs. i

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying draw- 1 ings, it will be evident that although very simple construction has been provided for carrying out the object of the invention, the latter will be efficient in operation and will possess a number of advantageous characteristics.

In the drawing, certain specific details of construction have been shown for accomplishing probably the best results, and in the preceding such details have been described, but it will be evident that I need not be limited thereto otherwise than to the ex tent to which the appended claims restrict me. v

I claim:

1. A washing machine including an upright rotatably mounted shaft having opergles of the board, upright C-shaped clips embracing the edge portions of the board at the angles thereof and the ends of the flanges at such angles, the intermediate portions of such clips being spaced outwardly from said flanges, fasteners passing through one end of the clips into the board, and additional fasteners driven through the other ends of said clips into the adjacent ends of the several flanges.

2. A washing machine having an upright shaft, means for turning said shaft, and a diamond-shaped washing head carried by the lower end of the shaft and comprising a horizontal plate member of diamond shape in top view, upright flanges depending from the four edges of the plate member and contacting at their ends beneath the corners of said member and clothes attaching loops carried by the head adjacent the corners thereof.
