BOARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 2, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VALTER H. FAIR- onrm), a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Board, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a board of a composite character adapted for general use but more particularly for wall board, box material and as a substitute for lumber and the like.
The object of my invention is to produce a comparatively inexpensive but satisfactory board of this character, the same com prising two facing sheets of paper with an interposed corrugated strip all of whose corrugations 0r one-half thereof as may be desired are filled with a filling and binding substance.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a part of a board made in accordance with my invention and showing all of the corrugations filled; and Fig. 2 a similar view showing one-half of the corrugations filled.
Referring to the embodiment of my invention as illustrated in Fig. 1 my board comprises two facing sheets A and B, an interposed corrugated sheet C whose corrugations are filled with a filling and binding substance indicated by D. The filling and binding substance is preferably a mixture of sawdust and silicate of soda, the sawdust being used because comparatively inexpensive and the silicate of soda because of its fire proof and adhesive qualities. The silicate of soda acts as a binding agent binding the sawdust together and also acts as an adhesive for securing the filler to the sheets of paper. The facing strips may be secured by an adhesive in the usual way to the CLCOWIIS of the corrugations of the corrugated sheet.
While I prefer to use the materials above mentioned I contemplate using other materials, for instance in lieu of the sawdust I may employ asbestos, mineral wool, plumbago or certain forms of clay, and in lieu of the silicate of soda I may employother fprms of mineral or animal or vegetable g ue.
In Fig. 2 I have shown a modified form of construction of board in which only onehalf of the corrugations are filled with the filler, for instance those corrugations which are adjacent or exposed to the lower facing strip B.
The board made in accordance with my invention is thus comparatively inexpensive and possesses many advantages for practical uses particularly as a substitute for the solid paper board and also as a substitute for thin Wooden boards. Moreover it is superior to such boards when silicate of soda or the like is employed as it then has fire proof qualities.
I claim:
1. A board comprising a double faced corrugated paperboard including two facing sheets and an interposed corrugated sheet secured thereto, and a filler in the corrugations, said filler comprising a comminuted body material and a binding agent.
2. A board comprising a double faced corrugated paper board including two facing sheets and an interposed corrugated sheet secured thereto, and a filler in the corrugations, said filler comprising sawdust and silicate of soda.
3. A board comprising a double faced corrugated paper board including two facing sheets and an interposed corrugated sheet secured thereto, and a filler in the corrugations adjacent one of said sheets.
