BOWING-ROD AND BRACKET THEREFOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 2, 1915.
Application filed February 12, 1915. Serial No. 7,762.
To all whom it may concern a 1 Be it known that I, HARRY EBERT, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Frederick, in the county of Frederick and State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bowing- Rods and Brackets Therefor, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates toshutter 'b'owers; and has particular reference to an improved bower rod and supporting bracket therefor.
The present invention has for an object to provide a bower rod which is readily detachable from the bracket, and which may be secured to the bracket from either side thereof to thus provide a bracket which may be applied to either the right or left shutter or blind without the necessity of making the brackets in pairs and of peculiar forms for the respective right and left shutters.
It is also an object of the present invention to provide a shutter bower which not only embodies'all of the above advantages of structure and operation, but which also may be economically manufactured and easily handled and applied.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the following detail disclosure of the present embodiment of the invention, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein,
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view of the outer 'side of a window casing and an open shutter hinged thereto, showing the bower rod and bracket in position. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the improved bracket and bower rod detached from one another. Fig. 8 is a face view of the bracket, showing the socket thereof in vertical section. Fig. 4 is an inner end view of the'bracket showing the socket thereof in section at right angles to Fig. 3, and showing the bower rod ready to be detached.
Referring to this drawing, wherein like parts are designated by similar characters of references throughout the several views, 10 designates a shutter or blind hinged in the usual manner to a window casing 11, the sill of which is provided with the usual bower rod socket 12.
The blind 10 is provided with a bracket, the base 13 of which is suitably secured to the blind by means of screws or the like. The base 13 has an outstanding arm 14 preferably at its inner end and upon the outer end of which is provided a socket 15. The
socket 15 is provided with a cylindrical opening 16 extending vertically therethrough and through the opposite sides of the socket '15 to somewhat snugly receive the depending shank 17 on the inner end of the bower rod 18. The shank 17 is cylindrical in form and is adapted to freely turn within the opening 16 of the socket. The intermediate portion of the socket 15 has an annular groove 19 in the inner wall thereof adapted to receive a laterally extending pin 20 carried upon the intermediate portion of the shank 17, for the purpose of retaining the shank from displacement from the socket.
Within the inner side of the socket 15 there is'provided a. groove or slot 21 opening through the opposite sides of the socket coinmunicating with'the intermediate groove 19 and the socket opening 16, and is of a size suflicient onlyto admit of the passage of the pin 20 to the interior of the socket.
From Figs. 2 and 4 it will be noted that this groove 21 is in the inner side of the socket, that the pin 20 projects laterally from the shank 17 immediately beneath the bower rod 18, and that therefore it is necessary to turn the bower rod 18 into parallelism with the outstanding arms 14, as shown in Fig. 4, to register the pin 20 with the groove 21. The bower rod 18 can only be released from the socket 15 by turning the rod 18 into this above described position shown in Fig. 4, so that when the bracket is in place on the blind 10 the blind prevents the turning of the rod 18 into the detaching position. With this construction it is seen that the bower rod 18 is permitted to swing freely upon the socket 15 into all the required positions without accidentally becoming detached from the socket, and that when it is desired to detachthe bower rod 18 it is only necessary to remove the bracket from the blind when the bower rodmay be turned into the proper position for withdrawal.
The advantage of such a structure is apparent for in applying the bowers to shutters, it is only necessary to insert the bower rod 18 in the bracket from the side desired, dependent upon whether for the right or left shutter, and to then secure the bracket in place. This obviates the necessity of purchasing the shutter bowers in pairs, in handling the brackets and rods assembled, of the disadvantage of breaking the pairs when 'make various changesin the details of construction and design of this shutter bower within the scope of the following claims.
What is claimed is r 1. In a shutter bower; a socket open at its top and bottom and having an interior annular groove therebetween; a bowing rod having a shank forengagement in the top or bottom of the socket; and a pin on the shank adapted to travel in the annular groove to retain the shank in the socket; the socket also'having a pin receiving recess at one side through which the pin is adapted to enter said groove upon the turning of the pin to said side. 7 l
2. In a shutter bower; a shutter bracket having a socket provided with a longitudinal opening terminating in the opposite ends of the socket; a bowing rod having a shank engageable in either end of the socket opening and provided with a laterally extending pin intermediate. the ends of the shank; the socket having, an annular groove in its inner wall intermediate the ends thereof to receive said pin and admit the turning of Copies of this patent may be obtained for said shank, and also havinga through recess at one side of said opening traversing the annular groove to admit the pin to the groove whereby the pin may be concealed and'the shank be held from displacement from the socket.
3. Ina shutter bower; abracket adapted n for securement to a shutter and having an 7 outstanding arm provided with an inclosing socket; said socket having a through openmg therein and a through recess at the inner' side of the opening; a bowing rod engageable in the socket from either end of the opening and having a lateral pin for passage through said recess into the socket and adapted to be turned out of said recess for concealment in the socket and for secur- 4 I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
