GARBAGE-CAN COVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. Ml, I915.
Application filed January 2, 1915. Serial No. 6.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN J. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montclair, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbage-Gan Covers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more particularly to cans for storing garbage or the like; and it consists of an improved lid or closure therefor which is adapted to prevent the uncovering of the can by animals seeking access to its contents; a happening which is ordinarily a frequent cause of annoyance.
The invention is fully described in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating a preferred embodiment thereof, and is specifically pointed out in the claim.
Figure l is a partly sectional elevation showing the top portion of an ordinary can having my invention applied thereto in convenient manner. Fig. 2 shows a can cover embodying my invention in modified form.
As shown in Fig. 1, the can 2 and its cover are of ordinary construction; the latter comprising as usual a suitable cover plate 3 having a fixed cylindrical flange extension forming a can-encircling band 4.
This cover or lid ordinarily fits loosely over the top of the can so as to permit of easily placing and removing it; and it is consequently a more or less easy matter for a fairly enterprising dog to remove it by industriously poking at it.
The object of my invention is to practically prevent such action, and it consists essentially in providing the can-encircling cover with a spiked or pointed edge portion 10, so arranged as to naturally discourage such action when it is attempted. Preferably this protecting pointed edge 1'0 is formed on a. separate sheet metal strip 11 which is adapted to be secured to the cover as an outer band thereon, by suitable clamping means, as indicated; the spikes or points 10 10 being most simply provided by scalloping or serrating the edge metal of the band, and being spread away from the body of the can so as to best insure effective contact therewith in any eifort, such as previously mentioned, to displace the cover.
The separate pointed-edge band described may be conveniently applied to ordinary can covers, so as to afiord the desired protection without involving any change in the ordinary construction; but in the case of new constructions the pointed edge may be obviously provided directly upon the fixed flange or band 4 of the cover as indicated in Fig. 2; and the protecting points may also be formed otherwise than by simply serrating the sheet metal, as indicated at 10* Fig. 2.
What I claim is:
In combination with a garbage can, a handled cover plate therefor having a can-encircling flange which is provided with a circular series of depending spikes spaced away from the wall of the can, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANKLIN J. CLARK.
