The invention relates to package heading machines and consists in the construction as hereinafter set forth. Y

The improved machineis capable of being used for the heading of packages of various constructions but as illustrated and specilically described, it is particularly designed for use in the heading of packages having cylindrical'bodies formed of spiral wrappings of paper or similar material. The heads are formed of wood and are provided with the usual croze of barrel construction, butias the body is not provided with a groove the head is engaged with a chine-hoop formed of metal. This hoop has a V-shaped groove to fit the croze of the head and is of a size corresponding to the internal diameter of the body soas to be capable of entering the end thereof. The hoop is also preferably provided with a return bent flange which passes around the end of the cylindrical body and over the outer edge thereof, formi ing a metallic reinforcement.
The operations performed by the machine are first, the pressing of the head and chinehoop into engagement with the end of the cylindrical body; second, the rolling down of the outer flange of the chine-hoop which is originally of the flaring form to permit the entrance of the end of the paper body; third, the automatic nailing of the head, the
nails being distributed around the body and arranged to pass through the same, the chine-hoop, and into the headv in' a radial direction. These operations are performed by a mechanism, thedetail construction of which is as follows: The frame of the machine is preferably formed of a bed A, standards B rising therefrom, and an annular top frame C moLmted-at-the upper ends of said standards. Centrally within this frame is a yertieal movable plunger or work supporting table D which is reciprocated by suitable mechanism such as a crank E and abutment F. The plunger is guided in slide-ways G on the standard, and the crank is mounted on a shaft H driven at slow speed through the medium ofthe step-down gear train I from a `drive-shaft J, while theV clutch K and trip pedal L control the cycle of movement. The arrangement is such that during each cycle Vthe plunger or work table D is raised from and lowered again by one complete l revolution of the crank.

To provide for-slight inequality-in size, the plunger D is provided with a yielding top plate D? resiliently supported on springs D3. This yielding connection is also employed for another important function, that -is I to' provide a suitable interval of delayl between the completion of engagement of the head with the body and the lowering of the Vwork in which ythe liange closing and nailing operations may be performed. Thuswhile the movement of the crank and plunger is continuous the movement imparted to the work is intermittent.
Flange .closing meczczm'sm.-As has been already described, the chine-hoop O is provided with a return bent flange O for fitting over the end of the paper body and this flange is originally of a flaring-form 'to receive the end of the body 'and to guide it into full engagement with the hoop. The flared flange is then closed down into closeengagement with the body by the operation of presser rolls. The rolls P are distributed a'boutthe package body and are carried by a revoluble annular member which also constitutes an element in the nailing mechanism, to be hereinafter described. The member P is supported upon the annular member C and is provided with peripheral gear teeth P2 which are in mesh with the pinion P3 on the vertical shaft P4 intermittently driven by a bevel pinion P5 engaging an interrupted bevel gear wheel PG on onev of the members of the gear train J. This mechanism will impart an intermittent rotary movement to the annular member P and the timing is such that the member P begins its rotation upon the completion of the full engagement of the head with the body and continues to rotate during the interval of delay caused by the compression and eX- pansion of the spring D3. The member P then remains stationary during the remainder of the cycle and while the work on the plunger is being lowered.
During the intermittent rotation of the member P the rolls P travel about the liange of the chine-hoop and the distance traveled is sufiicient to cause the rolling down of all portions of the flange.V As preferably constructed and as shown, the annular member P travels during each movement one third of a revolution and as there are siX rolls equally spaced the operations performed thereby are equivalent to two complete revolutions of a single roll. n their normal positions the rolls `P are sufficiently withdrawn from the chine-hoop to provide an unobstructed path for the latter as it is forced upward against the abutment N. During the initial movement of the member P, the rolls are brought into contact with the periphery'of the chine-hoop and are held there during the continued movement, this being accomplished by the following construction: Q are rockable members pivotally attached at Q to the member P and extendingv inward therefrom. The rolls P are journaled at the front ends of the members Q and the latter are normally arranged at a slight angle to the radius of the member P being yieldably held in this position by springs Q2 which draw them against adjustable stops Q3. In this position the rolls areA withdrawn from contact with the chine-hoop as has been already stated, but adjacent to the rolls are arranged yieldable stops Q4 which project from the stationary member N on which the abutment N is formed. The stops Q4 project outward from the member N into the path of movement of the rolls P during the rotary movement of the member P and Jform a suiiicient obstacle to temporarilyl arrest said roll and cause the arm Q to swing upon its pivot. This movement will continue until the arm Q bears against an adjustable stop Q5 on the opposite side thereof, after which the arm Q yand roll P are compelled to rotate with the member P riding from the stop Q4 by pressing the latter inward against the tension of a spring QG. The swinging movement of the arm Q will carry the roll P inward into contact with the chine-hoop which is pressed against f the cylindrical body of the package and during the continued operation is rolled in firm contact therewith. At the completion of the movement the springs Q4 will draw the arms Q again against the stop Q3 withdrawing the rolls P from contact with the hopper.
Nail-ing mechanisch-The mechanism employed for nailing the heads to the bodies comprises first, mechanism for extracting the nails from an irregular mass in the hopper and arranging them in parallelism, second; means for periodically distributing the required number of nails into the position for handling, and third; means for driving and pressing the nails radially inward. The first of these groups of mechanism or the nail assorting means, includes a hopper R the bottom plate of which is inclined and formed with a series of V-shaped grooves P. therein. rPhe bottoms of the grooves are of suliicient width to receive the body of the nail, but too narrow to permit the head of the nail to enter therein.
R3 is a slide having V-shaped sheet metal flanges tting over the V-shaped ribs on the bed between the grooves R.
Pt* is the front plate of thehopper provided with depending V-shaped lugs R5 with the apex of each V cut away and' concaved suciently to permit the head of the nail to pass therebeneath. These lugs fill the grooves R with the exception of the lower portion thereof, providing only suiicient clearance for the movement of the V-shaped fingers R3.
R is a grooved guide having the slots or grooves alined with the grooves R, said guide extending in an inclined position from the hopper R.
R7 is a cross-head to which all of the fingers R3 are attached.
R8 are pitman rods connecting said crosshead R7 to cranks R9. Thus every time the cranks R9 are rotated the fingers R3 are given their reciprocatory movement, being pressed into and withdrawn from the hopper R. In this movement the nails lying in irregular arrangement within the hopper are agitated in such a manner that they will tend to arrange themselves parallel to the direction of movement of the fingers with one of the nails at the bottom of each groove R. In this position the nail is free to move endwise beneath the lugs R5 out from the hopper. Here the head of the nail will engage 'a stop plate R10 and at the same time the body of the nail will .pass into registration with the slot in the guide 'Re permitting it to drop while the head remains in engagement with the guide and suspends the nail. The result is that the nails are arranged in parallelism being all suspended by their heads and being free to travel down the inclined guide to the lower end thereof. At this point there is arranged a laterally movable bar S provided with recesses S which register with the slots in the guide and are adaptedl to receive the nail from each and to carry said nail laterally.
S2 are pockets in the guide R6 into which the nails are forced out of engagement with the recess in the bar S upon the lateral movement of said bar by the action of cams S3. The cams are formed by grooves in the under face of a bar S4 arranged above the guide and the arrangement is such that the nails which have thus far been suspended by their heads in the guide R6 and inthe bar S, are forced into the recess S2 which is of suihcient size to permit the passage of the head, thereby allowing the nail to fall.
`With the mechanism just described, the nails are extracted from an irregular mass, are arranged in parallelism, and upon each operation ofthe laterally shiftable bar Sa predetermined number of Ynails are disengaged from the Vguide and are dropped. From this point the nails when liberated Vcan be distributed to the proper positions for nailing, but as it is necessary to arrange them radially with their heads extending outward reversing mechanism is provided by which the nails are dropped head downward. This reversing mechanismvcomprises a rotary member T having pockets T preferably on opposite sides thereof and which are periodically registered with the recess R2 from which the nails aredropped. Thus upon each reciprocation of the bar S the nails dropped thereby are deposited in the pockets T, and upon the rotation of the member T, are carried into a reverse position, being held from" disengagement by a segmental guide T2. v
T3 is a gate arranged beneath T upon which the heads ofthe nails when reversed temporarily rest.
T* are conduits beneath the gate T2 in registration with the nail pockets T, the arrangement being such that the gate T3 will be withdrawn to simultaneously dischargel all of the nails in their respective pockets into the conduits, through which they pass by gravity in radial directions to the nailing position. For driving the parts of the mechanisms above described, beveled gear wheels U transmit rotary motion from the shaft P4 to horizontal shaft U, gears U2 on this shaft communicating movement to the cranks R". Motion is also transmitted vagainst the outer the member Y from the shaft Uthrough the medium of intermeshing gears U3 to the rotary member serves to reciprocate said bar which is returned by a spring UG. The gate T3 is actuated by a cam Von the shaft U which positively moves it forwardinto a position for interceptingfthe nails, while springs V effect a quick release upon disengagement with the. cam. As shown the cam V has a peripheral notch V2 therein with which a lug V3 on the gate is engaged when in its retracted position, and a shoulder VL at one side of the notch V2 governs the lug V3 in closing the gate.
Nail hinting mecmm'sm.-The nails when released by the gate T3 are moved by gravity through the conduits T4 which extend radially to a series of points preferably equally spaced about the periphery of the package head. The nails in falling through the conduits will acquire considerable velocity, and to prevent recoilinv' when reaching the end of their course, a special construction is provided. rThis consists of a pocketed member W preferably mounted upon the revoluble member P and having' an inclined deflecting face Vf. rThis pocket is registered with the corresponding conduit T4 at the time ofV release by movement of the gate T3, and the nail traveling down the conduit, head foremost,-will strike against the inclined shoulder lV and will be deilected downward. The pocket VT is so fashioned that the head of the nail is permitted to pass downward through a slot TVE at the outer endr of the pocket, while the body of the nail passes through a slot of restricted width l/VS. This forms a shoulder VW* for engaging with the Vhead ofthe nail and any recoil occasioned by the striking of the head end of the pocket will be prevented by the shoulder VVJ which prevents inward movement of the nail but permits it to drop downward through 'the slots W2 and VW. Beneath the pocket W in its position of rest, is a radial slot X in the member C, and alining with this slotis a nail driver X which has an anti-friction roll X2 engaging a cam slot in the under face'of the rotary member P. The slot T3 is of a form to hold the driver X yat the outward end of its movement during a part of the revolution of the member P and to impart an inward radial movement to said driver during another portion of the rotary movement of the member P. Every alternate driver engages a similar portion of the cam slot X3, while the intermediate drivers engage a different portion of said slot, the arrangement being one to effect the simultaneousfmovement of one half of the drivers and alternately the simultaneous lmovement of thev other half. This will divide up the work of driving the nails and decrease the power required for the machine. The rotary member P is preferably completely housed in a cap member N2 which is secured to the annular member C and has dependentv therefromV a flange N on which the abutment N is formed. This fiange N also forms a journal for the rotary member P which is provided with anti-friction rolls N4 engaging said fiange.
The construction being as described in operation, a supply of nails is deposited in the hopper R, and after the assortment of a portion of these nails by the mechanism described, the machine is in condition for operation. The workman first places the package body upon the table or plunger D centering it by engagement with the circular guide D. At the same time the head with the chine-hoop in engagement there with is placed at the top of the body with the lower edge of the hoop just entered into engagement. Motion is then imparted to the machine by actuating the tripping pedal L which throws in the clutch K and communicates motion from the shaft J through the gear train T to the crank E, and through the abutment F to the plunger D. The plunger is thus raised, carrying up the package which is guided by the annular member M into engagementwith the abutment N. Here further movement of the head and chine-hoop is prevented but the body continues to be forced upward until in full engagement with the head. This occurs before the cranl has reached the upper limit of its movement and thus the plunger continues to rise but is permitted to do so without injury to the package by the compression of the springs D2. Upon the completion of the engagement of the head with the cylindrical body the interrupted gear Pi enters into mesh with the pinion P2, imparting rotary motion to the shaft PL and thereby driving all of the mechanism at the upper end of the machine. This will instantaneously start the members PlV in rotation causing the engagement of the rolls P with the stops Q4 and in the further movement of the member P rocking the arms Q until arrested by the stops Q5. This presses said rolls inward against the return bent 'fiange of the chine-hoop and during the further movement of the member P said flange will be rolled down against the cylindrical body.
During the operation just described the rotation of the annular member P will actuate the nail drivers X', one half of the number being first moved and at the completion of their movement the other half are oper-v ated. The nails for this operation have previously been deposited in the radial slots X and are in the path of movement of the drivers which force them inward, the point first penetrating the body and then the chine-hoop and the head. The V shaped portion of the chine-hoop forms a guide for directing the point of the nail to the apex, thus insuring that it will beproperly directed in entering the wood of the head. In the mean while the other movable parts of the nailing mechanism are in operation, the member T being rotated to carry a series of nails previously deposited in the pocket '1" into reverse position and above the gate T3. The pockets W are also being carried by the movement of the member P and are out of registration with the nail conduits TL and just at the completion of the movement of said member P', the nails reversed by the member T will be above the gate T3, and the cam V will register its notch V2 with the lug V3 permitting the spring V to snap open the gate T3. Thus just as the pockets W are brought into registration with the conduits T 4 a set of nails is released by the gate T3 and fall through said conduits into the pockets W, from which they vdrop into the radial slots X also` in registration therewith. The nails thus deposited are in position for the succeeding operation. The nail assorting mechanism is also in operation during the movement just described, the shafts U imparting motion through the medium of the gear Wheels U2 to the gear cranks R9, and the latter reciprocating the pitmans RS, cross bars R7 and fingers R3. The nails in contact with these fingers will be frictionally moved and will arrange themselves in parallelism' within the V shapedrecesses R', and during the successive reciprocations the lowermost nails in these recesses will drop into the slots R2. The heads however, are too large to pass into the slots R2 and will be supported upon the oblique flanges of the fingers R3. Thus the frictional engagement between the heads and the lingers R3 will feed the nail in the slot R2 downward through the slot beneath the lug R5 out from the hopper. As soon as the nail thus fed comes into full registration with the slot in the guide RG the body willv drop through the slot and the nail assume a vertical position suspended by the head.
The capacity of the asserting mechanism for the nails is in excess of the demand of the machine and as a consequence the nails will accumulate in the guide ,R6 until the slots thereof are filled. When they reach a point where the nail being drawn outward by the lingers R3 is stopped by a nail in the slotted guide R6 before the full length of the nail is in registration with the slot the nail will be prevented from dropping through the slot, and consequently upon the return movement of the fingers R3 it will be moved back again; Thus the feeding of nails is stopped until removal of nails from the engagement therewith, of an abutment for said head, means for moving said support t to force the head into the body, said abutment and movable support together constituting a press, an annular member in iiXed relation torsaid abutment surrounding the headed end of the package, radial guides in said annular member for nails, and means operating in sequence to the operation of said press for forcing nails inwardin said guides through said body and into the head.
2. In a package heading machine, the comvbination with an abutment for the head, of
means for forcing the body of the package having a head initially engaged therewith against said abutment, an annular member surrounding the headed end of said package in fixed relation to said abutment and having radial guides or nails, means for periodically depositing nails in said guides, and means operating subsequently to the. deposit of said nails and the engagement of the head with the body for driving said nails through the body into the head.
8. In a package heading machine, the combination with an abutment for the package head, of means for moving the head and body of the package against said abutment to complete the engagement thereof, an annular member surrounding said abutment in lifted relation thereto having radial guides for nails, means for distributing a plurality oi nails into the respectivey radial guides,
and means for subsequently driving the nails fiom said guides through the body into the head of a package.

The combination with a nail guide, of a conduit through which the nail is fed to said guide in a direction reverse to that in which the nail is driven, an abutment for arresting movement of the nail in said conduit when in registration with said guide, means for preventing the recoil of the nail from said abutment, and drivers for the nails.
5. The combination with a series of radially arranged nail guides, of a holder for nails located centrally of said guides, means for periodically delivering nails from said holder corresponding in number to said guides, conduits through which said nails Ywhich said nails are distributed to the respective guides, and ydrivers for the nails in their guides.
7. The combination of an annular member having a series or" radially arranged guide channels in the upper :tace thereof, a
rotarymember above said annular member having a series of nail receiving pockets vmovable into registration with said guide channels,nail delivery conduits communi'- cating with said pockets when in registration with said guide channels, means for delivering a series ofnails to saidV conduits timed with the registration of said pockets, and drivers for the nails. The combination of an annular member having a series of radially arranged guide channels in the upper face thereof, a rotatable member above said annular mem` ber forming acap for said channels and provided with a series of nail receiving pockets adapted for registrationwith said channels, nail delivery conduits discharging into the respective pockets when in registration with said guide channels, said con? duits having their receiving ends in alinement, means for delivering nailsinto` the receiving ends of said conduits timed to occur when said pockets are in registration with said conduits and channels, and drivers for the nails.
9. The combination of an annular member having a series of radially arranged nail guide channels therein, drivers in alinement with said channels, a rotary member above said annularimember having `an operative engagement with said drivers, nail receiving pockets carried bysaid rotary member and adapted for registration with said channels, nail delivery conduits discharging into said pockets when in registration withsaid channels and having alined receiving ends, means for `delivering nails into the receivingends Y of said conduits, and a gate controlling the delivery of said nails into said conduits timed to open when said pockets are in registration with said channels and conduits.
10. The combination with a series of radially arranged nail guides, conduits for receiving nails and delivering the same to the guides, and means for delivering to said loo conduits a plurality of nails headforemost,
a gate for simultaneously opening said conduits to receive the nails from said delivering means, and drivers positioned in operative relation to said guides.
11. The combination with an annular member, having radially arranged nail guide channels therein, of drivers in alinement with said channels, a rotary member above said annular member having a cam for engagingV and operating said drivers and pocketed to register with said channels, nail delivery conduits discharging radially outward kinto said pockets when the latter are in registration with said'channeis, means fory delivering nails headforemost to said conduits, and a gate controlling the discharge of Vnails into said conduits timed to the registration of said pockets with the channels and conduits.
12. The combination with an annular member, having a series of radially arranged nail guide channels, of drivers alined with said channels, a rotary member above said annular member forming a cap for said channels and provided with pockets for registration therewith, a cam upon said rotary member forming an operative means for said drivers, conduits leading to said radially arranged nail guides and adapted to discharge into said pockets when in'registration with said channels, means for delivering to said conduits .nails headforemost, and means for turning the delivery of nails into the conduits upon the registration therewith of the channels.
13. In a package heading machine, the combination with a support for the body of the package, of an abutment for the package head, means for. effecting a relative movement between lthe support and the abutment to force the head into the body, a member surrounding Vthe abutment and in iXed relation thereto, a plurality of radial nail guides in said member, and means for driving the nails inward in said guides and into the package.
14. The combination with a member having a plurality of guide channels in the upper face thereof, a rotary member above the first-mentioned member having a series of nail-receiving pockets movable into registration with the guides, nail delivery conduits arranged to communicate with the pockets, means lfor delivering a series of Copies of this patent may be obtained for nails to the pockets, and drivers for the nails.
15. The combination with a member having a plurality of guide channels, a second member having a series of nail-receiving pockets, said members being relatively rotatable to bring the pockets and channels into registration, nail delivery conduits arranged to communicate with the pockets, means for delivering a series of nails to the pockets, and drivers for the nails.
16. The combination with a member having a plurality of guide channels, a second member having a series of nail-receiving pockets, said members being relatively rotatable to bring the pockets and channels into registration, nail delivery conduits arranged to communicate with the pockets when the latter are in registration with the guide channels, means for delivering a series of nails to the pockets, drivers for the nails, and means for operating the parts in timed relation.y
17. The combination with a revoluble member, of nail guides arranged in said member, drivers in alinement with said guides, means for delivering nails to the respective guides, and a cam slot in said'revoluble member engaged by said drivers.

The combination with a revoluble member, of a plurality of nail guides arranged in said member, drivers in alinement with the respective guides, means for deliveringnails to said guides, and means for effecting a simultaneous movement of a portion of said drivers and for alternately effecting a simultaneous movement of the remaining drivers.
19. The combination with a series of radially arranged nail guides, of feeding oonduits communicating with said guides, means for feeding a plurality of nails headforemost to said feeding conduits, means for feeding said nails headforemost to said guides, and drivers for the nails arranged in operative relation to the guides.
