To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY G. SCHWERD- TLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sealed Wrapped Packages and Cover- Blanks Therefor, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a sealed wrapped box or package of merchandise wherein the covering blank or wrapper, which is especially designed for completely covering or enveloping all the exterior Walls of the box or package, is adherently attached to all of said walls in order to effectually seal the package and thus exclude dust and vermin, and prevent tampering with the contents of the package except by destroying or mutilating its covering wrapper.

The wrapper blank which is embodied in my novel sealed wrapped package is folded about and adherently attached to the package so as to completely envelop it on all sides. The wrapper is of minimum size, its entire areabeing but slightly larger than the sum of the areas of all of the Walls of the package to be wrapped, and of such shape that it may be closed around the package in the least time and with a minimum amount of trouble and effort, parts of the wrapper having substantially the same superficial dimensions as, and covering exactly, the several walls of the box and having at certain of its edges narrow lap extensions or projections that fold over some of the box corners to make a neat sealand finish. With this wrapper, there is no folding or tucking required, other than the narrow extensions mentioned, that is to say, none of the folding usually necessary in completely wrapping packages wherein a plurality of layers of a wrapper are neces sarily superposed by tucking in the ends of the wrapper during the operation of closing the same around the package. Before its application to the box or package, one face of the wrapper is completely coated with an adhesive which serves to seal and secure the wrapper about the package, thus doing away with the necessity of secondary applications of adhesive to the wrapper after the same is partly folded, and also doing away with secondary securing means for the wrapper, fastenings.

Another advantage resulting from the use of my improved wrapper when adherently afiixed to the Wallsof the box or as herein contemplated, is the fact that the printing for all sides of the package, such as the name of the contents of the package, name and address of the manufacturer, directions, labels, trade-marks, ornamentation, etc., may be printed upon the wrapper at one operation and before it is applied to the box, thus dispensing with the use of separate labels which in ordinary practice are usually applied to boxes and in some case to their wrappers, in the latter case, the printed labels being usually applied after the package has been wrapped.

The package when completely wrapped is not only effectually sealed, but is neat, uniformly smooth, and attractive, and presents no bulging or irregular surfaces due to foldmg the wrappers at the corners and the wrapper also forms a cover for the package which remains thereon after the package has been opened. As the edges of the wrapper all coincide with the corners of the package, an exceedingly neat and smooth appearance is presented on all sides.

In the accompanying drawings, is a plan view of the blank or wrapper. Figs.'2 and 3, are perspective views a package at two stages of the wrapping operation. Fig. 4, is a perspective view of a completely wrapped box made in accordance with the present invention.

The blank or wrapper 10 of paper or other easily foldable material is cut in one piece substantially in the form shown in Fig. 1, and comprises a rectangular body or bottom portion 11 having the exact dimensions of one of the walls of the box or package to which the wrapper is to be adherently applied, preferably one of the larger walls, as for instance, the bottom wall of the boxor package. On two opposite edges 12 of the body portion 11 are rectangular end wings 13 each of the same dimension in one such as strings, tapes and other direction as the body portion 11 of the blank, the other dimension depending upon the thickness of the box or package to be wrapped, or its measurement in the direction perpendicular to the wall covered by package,

From the other opposite edges 15 of the body portion 11 oflthe blank project side wings 16, 17, the dimension of each in one direction being the same as the body portion 11 ,between the edges 12, and in/the other direction, their dimension depends upon the thickness of the box or package. A narrow marginal lap extension 18 is continuous with one of the side wings as 16, and is no longer than the length of the body portion- 11, for a purpose presently to be described.

Integral with the other side wing 17 is an extension 19 preferably of the same length and width as the body portion 11. At each end of the side wings 16 and 1.7 is a short projecting portion or end lap 20, lying parallel with the end projection 13 when the blank is in the flat, and as ,Wide as the sides 16 and 17 where they connect with said sides but are preferably narrowed toward their free ends so that when folded and adherently attached to the box there Will be no bunching or folding of the material at the corners of the packages.

As more clearly appearing in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawing, the marginal lap extension 18 in the instance shown, is no longer than the length of the body ortion 11 of the blank, and as, shown in ig. 2, this marginal lap extension is no longer than the box to which the wrapper is applied; that is to say,,the ends of this marginal lap terminate at points short of the extreme ends of the laps 20, leaving angular corner gaps 18 at the opposite ends of the wing 16, hence, when the marginal lap 18 is turned over and adherently attached to the upper wall of. the box, said lap will lie perfectly flat throughout its length and there will be no doubling or foldingof the paper covering at the corners, as would be the case if the corner gaps 1.8 were not present in the blank. This construction, therefore, not only makes a much neater and smoother appearance at the corners of the "package, but avoids the presence of crevices or spaces at the corners through which dust andvermin could find their Way.

A wrapper, such as described, before being applied to the package is first coated on one of its faces with an adhesive, after which one side or wall, such as the bottom side or wall of a package or box having the size of the body portion 11 of the blank, is placed on the adhesive coated face of the body portion and the side wings 16 and 17 folded up against the side walls of the package as in Fig. 2, and pressed thereon to cause them to be adherently attached to said walls. The margin or lap extension 18 and the endlaps 20 are then turned against and adherently attached respectively along the marginal edge of the upper wall of the package and to lap extensions 14 and 18.

The end wings 13 are then turned up and adherently attached to the ends of the package and over the folded end laps 20 to cover the same, after which the marginal lap extensions 1% are folded against and adherently attached to the upper wall of the box or package as more clearly shown in Fig. 3., Finally the flap 19 on the side wall 17 is folded over and adherently attached to the upper wall of the box, the said flap also overlying and attached to the marginal The marginal edges of said extension 19 in the preferred form, extend from end to end of the package and preferably to the edge of the box over which the side extension 18 is folded. If desired, the edge 23 of the extension 19 may terminate anywhere on this side of the package, the side-extension 18 being widened to compensate for the narrowing of the extension 19.

It is thus made clear that a wrapper, such as described, while containing the minimum material, is nevertheless, so shaped as to be sufficiently large to fully envelop all the walls of a rectangular box or package and provide for overlapping portions where necessary, the said Wrapper when enveloping and adherently attached to all the walls of the box or package forming a completely wrapped and sealed product presenting a smooth and neat appearance.

What I claim is 1. As a new article of manufacture, a sealed wrapped package, consisting of a box and a one-piece wrapper completely enveloping and adherently attached to all the exterior walls thereof, said wrapper comprising a body-portion and integral side and end wings each adherently attached respectively to the bottom and side and end walls of the box, one of said side wings and the two end wings being each provided with a marginal lap portion folded over upon and adherently attached to the upper wall of the box around the marginal edges thereof, and the remaining side wing being provided with an integral flap overlying and adherently attached to the uncovered portion of said wall and to said marginal laps, whereby to provide a completely wrapped and sealed package presenting a smooth exterior.

A sealed wrapped package consisting of a box and a one-piece wrapper completely enveloping and adherently attached to all the exterior walls thereof, said wrapper comprising a body portion and integral connecting side and end wings adherently attached respectively to the bottom and side and end walls of the box, the said body portion and the said wings which correspond respectively to the bottom and different side and end walls of the box having their edges coinciding witlrthe edges of the box walls to which they are respectively secured, said wrapper being further provided With integral extensions forming narrow marginal overlaps lying flatly and unfolded upon and adherently secured around the marginal edges of the remaining uncovered Wall of the box, said Wrapper further having an integral flap overlying and adherently attached to said marginal overlaps and to the uncovered portion of the Wall of the box to which said overlaps are secured, said last named flap having its edges coinciding With the edges of the box.
