EUMPING MECHANISM.
Specificati f Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 24 1915.
Application filed. June 24, 1914. Serial No. 847,0525,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LAURENTIUs LAURIN, a citizen of the Kingdom of Sweden, residing at Lysekil, Sweden, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pumping Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to internal combustion engines which are provided with air compressors and water-pumps.
The object of the invention is to improve the said parts of the engine so as to obtain a very compact and simple construction both of the pumps and compressors as well as of the driving means thereof. 1
The inventionconsists, briefly, in that the cylinders of the water pump and air compressors are placed around and in proximity of the crank shaft of the engine, while on said shaft is mounted a single eccentric serving to drive the pistons of all said cylinders, as will be more particularly described herebelow and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing I have shown in sectional View one embodiment of my invention.
Referring to the drawing, the crank casing or chamber 1 supports on each side of the crank shaft 2 two cylinders 3 and 4, of which the one 3 is a water pump cylinder while the other %1 is an air compressor cylinder. Each pair 3, 4: of said cylinders is suitably cast in one piece, and said pieces are in any suitable way securedto the casing 1 and may at the top be connected by a stay which in the form shown in the drawing is constituted by a usual air cooler 5. The pistons of all cylinders 3 and 4 are operated by a single eccentric 6 mounted on the crank shaft 2- 0f the engine. The ring 6 of said eccentric is engaged by a pin 7 on a link 11 which is pivoted to a pin 12 on the casing 1. A roller 8 journaled on a pin 13 secured to the ring 6 is located between and engages two shoulders 14; and 15 of the piston rod 9 common to the two cylinders 4 and will thus impart a reciprocating motion to said piston rod 9 when the crank shaft is revolving. The pistons of the pump cylinders 3 are connected with the ring 6 by means of connecting rods 10, but it may be understood that the said pump pistons may 1 be driven by any other suitable means, for
instance that shown in the drawing for the air compressor piston.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new'and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In means for the purpose described, the combination of the drive shaft of an engine, pump cylinders grouped about said shaft, pistons in said cylinders, an eccentric fixed on said shaft, a ring on said eccentric, a supportfor said shaft, a link pivotally connected to the support and the ring, and connections intermediate the ring and the pistons to actuate the latter.
2; In an internal combustion engine, the combination with the crank casing thereof, of a plurality of air compressor and water pump cylinders secured to said casing around and in proximity of the crank shaft of the engine, pistons in said cylinders, an eccentric mounted on said crank shaft, a ring on said eccentric, a link pivotally journaled on said crank casing, a pin secured to said link and engaging said ring, and means interconnecting the latter and all said pistons, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In an internal combustion engine, the combination with the crank shaft thereof, of a plurality of air compressor and water pump cylinders secured to said casing and being arranged in groups at opposite sides of the crank shaft and in proximity thereof, an air cooler connecting said groups of cylinders at the tops thereof and serving to stay said groups'of cylinders, pistons in said cylinders, an eccentric mounted on said crank shaft, a ring on said eccentric, a link pivotally journaled on saidcrank casing, a pin secured to said link and engaging said ring, and means interconnecting the latter and all said pistons, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LAURENTIUS LAURIN.
Witnesses V. WANSTEN, P. MAGNUsEN.
